Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

1.8.2008DDR3 to be nearly as cheap as DDR2 this year?
Pairing an Intel system with DDR3 memory may just be a reasonable expense later this year. According to a report by DigiTimes, memory makers hope that
prices for DDR3 memory
will slip to within 10% of DDR2 prices in the second
half of this year.
Reportedly, Intel is making an "aggressive push" to promote its DDR3-based platforms, and system
memory manufacturers are working with the semiconductor giant to pull forward their schedules for DDR3 memory production. The manufacturers expect
Intel to subsidize PC makers to sell more DDR3-based systems, and they estimate that 30% of new PCs shipped worldwide will be DDR3-powered in the
fourth quarter of this year.

Technology just keeps on increasing at a fairly speedy rate, and the glorious folks at Samsung are here to help us along with the next improvement;
according to I4U, they have just revealed their latest RAM module, this one packing a modest 32GB. The memory is DDR3, as mentioned, and is actually
designed for servers; it's constructed using Samsung 50nm 4Gb DDR3 chips, and operates at 1.35 volts, whilst supporting the trend of keeping data
center power usage to a minimum. I4U states that these modules manage to reduce power consumption by 20%, when up against 1.5V DDR3 modules, which can
save a vast amount of money when you consider the size of data centers.

19.06.2009Samsung to make world's largest capacity DDR3 DRAM chip
Samsung announced yesterday that it had made the world's largest capacity DDR3 DRAM chip. The chip has a capacity of 4Gb, and Samsung boasts that
by using this chip, they could produce memory modules of up to 32GB. The products produced are likely to be targeted at servers initially, as larger
capacities would reduce the number of machines required to produce the same collective capacities. The new modules are developed using Samsung's
50nm technology, which, as well as allowing for higher density, also increases efficiency. The 16GB DDR3 modules would consume 40 percent less energy
than 2GB DDR3 modules, which is likely to appeal to data centres and server owners.

31.01.2009Corsair aims to surpass 2GHz DDR3 next year
The folks over at Legit Reviews
have scored an interview with Corsair
Memory's co-founder and Vice President of Applications Engineering, John Beekley. In the interview, Beekley spends some time discussing Corsair's
plans for DDR3, a memory type he says is "optimized for clock rate rather than bandwidth." (Indeed, DDR3 RAM has much higher timings than DDR2 and
offers lower clock-for-clock performance.)
Beekley goes on to say Corsair aims to be "north of 2GHz" with production DDR3 RAM
by January 1, 2008, although he adds that getting to that speed "is not going to be easy." Currently, the
fastest DDR3 RAM Corsair offers (PDF) is rated for
operation at 1.8GHz with timings of 7-7-7-20 and a VDIMM setting of 2V33% higher than the 1.5V JEDEC standard for DDR3. Corsair may continue bumping
DDR3 speeds, but prices should remain high. Beekley says he doesn't expect DDR3 to reach price parity with DDR2 until "sometime in 2009."

27.09.2007DDR3 price premium over DDR2 to shrink to 10% in 2H
Amid Intel's aggressive push to supporting DDR3-powered platform, DRAM makers are working with the processor giant to advance their volume
production schedules in the hope that the joint effort will result in a less than 10% price gap between DDR3 and DDR2 in the second half of 2008. Some
DRAM makers believe that DDR3 will grow its role more obviously in 2008, after seeing DDR2 remain the mainstream memory standard for several years.
The relatively high price premium of DDR3 over DDR2 so far has however discouraged PC OEMs to migrate. The price gap should shrink more noticeably
this year, they projected, due to the aggressive push by Intel.
The DRAM makers expect some PC vendors will be subsidized by Intel to
migrate to DDR3-based platforms, and this should help encourage the entire industry to migrate accordingly. They noted that some PC vendors will only
introduce DDR3-based systems in the second half of the year. About 30% of new PCs shipping worldwide will be powered by DDR3 in the fourth quarter of
2008, they estimated.

24.01.2008AMD K10 Family Chips Support DDR3 Memory - Documents
Not only do Advanced Micro Devices' new tenth-generation microprocessors promise to increase performance because of micro-architectural improvements
and the increased amount of processing engines, they apparently feature DDR3 memory controller as well. Technical documents that cover AMD's latest
microprocessors, such as quad-core AMD Opteron or AMD Phenom and their derivatives, reveal that the new built-in memory controllers can support both
DDR2 and DDR3 memory types, provided that processors are installed into mainboards with DDR3 memory slots and appropriate BIOS.
According
to roadmaps that AMD shows to its partners, DDR3 memory support will only be available in microprocessors made using 45nm process technology and on
AM3 platforms due out in the second half of 2008. However, given that AMD's documents for BIOS developers already note both AM3 and DDR3, it is
highly likely that even current versions of AMD's tenth-generation microprocessors can support DDR3 memory in certain conditions.

04.06.2007AMD K10 Family Chips Support DDR3 Memory “ Documents
The new tenth-generation microprocessors from AMD promise to increase performance because of micro-architectural improvements and the increased amount
of processing engines. However, it appears that the new chips do hide some additional capabilities under the hood. For example, DDR3 support.
Advanced Micro Devices has always been conservative about new memory types support as each type of memory requires a brand new platform
family and having several platform families for one processor is something that AMD cannot afford. However, this does not mean that the companys chips
cannot support new types of memory. Apparently, already now AMDs latest processors feature DDR3 memory controller.
Technical documents that cover AMDs
latest microprocessors, such as quad-core AMD Opteron or AMD Phenom and their derivatives, reveal that the new built-in memory controllers can support
both DDR2 and DDR3 memory types, provided that processors are installed into mainboards with DDR3 memory slots and appropriate BIOS.

15.05.2007Micron 2Gbit DDR3 ready to go, but demand not there
With Intel's DDR3-supporting
Bearlake chipsets now
officially launched, players
in the DRAM market will begin
their transitions to DDR3
production. Like many other
DRAM makers, Micron Technology
is on its way to producing
DDR3, and the company believes
it is in a favorable position
to offer competitive pricing
and take the lead in the
next-generation SDRAM race.
However, the transition to
DDR3 will not come quickly and
will involve support from the
entire PC ecosystem, so DDR2
will remain the mainstream for
the next few years.
Although Micron has
diversified its product
offerings to NAND flash and
CMOS image sensors, the DRAM
maker continues making
advancements in the production
of DDR2, including the launch
of components running at
1066MHz. Digitimes recently

company's memory group, Kevin
Kilbuck about the migration to
DDR3, the current status of
the DRAM market and Micron's
developments within the
market.

07.06.2007DDR3 standard gets the green light
The Joint Electron Device
Engineering Council (Jedec)
has published the
specifications of the
forthcoming Double Data Rate 3

memory promises improvements
in performance and power
consumption over DDR2 and
older standards. The new
technology operates at 1.5V
and offers an increased
operating temperature range.
DD2 operates at 2.5V and DD1
used 1.8V. DDR3 also doubles
the pre-fetch buffer from
4-bit to 8-bit. The new memory
modules will especially shine
in applications that require
the transfer of large amounts
of memory. The decreases in
power consumption will also
help increase battery life in
laptops.

29.02.2008DDR3 vs. DDR2 - The Intel P35 Test
About three years ago
DDR2 memory first appeared on
the desktop PC scene. It would
be impossible to say it burst
on the scene since it was
introduced with the
unimpressive Intel NetBurst
processors. In that market
DDR2 was more like a trickle
since it was mainly a
curiosity for a processor that
was running a distant second
place to the leading AMD
Athlon chips, which were still
powered by DDR
memory.
DDR2
finally became the universal
standard last May/June when
AMD switched to DDR2 on their
new AM2 platform and Intel
introduced Core 2 Duo, the new
CPU performance leader. Core 2
Duo resided on socket 775,
which also was fed by DDR2.
While it sometimes seems like
centuries ago, it is worth
remembering that Intel Core 2
Duo regained the CPU
performance crown less than a
year ago, and the two years
prior to that all the fastest
systems used AMD Athlon
64/X2/FX processors.
What this review does
address is the performance of
the new DDR3 memory that is
launched with P35. The new
Intel P35 chipset, known as
Bearlake during development,
supports either DDR2 or DDR3
memory. This presented a
perfect opportunity to look at
the performance of both DDR3
and DDR2 on the new P35
chipset. We were also able to
compare performance to a Gold
Editors' Choice Intel P965
motherboard. The results of
these comparisons provided
interesting results about the
capabilities of the new P35
memory controller. It also
answered the question of
whether you should care about
DDR3 in any upcoming system
purchase.

16.05.2007Corsair Introduces New "Dominator" DDR3 Memory Modules
Corsair Memory has quietly, as these are not the industry's first modules at the new speed bins, announced its 1600MHz and 1800MHz DDR3 memory
modules. The new Corsair Dominator DDR3 memory modules come as 2GB dual-channel kit and can operate at 1800MHz with CL7 7-7-20 with a 2V voltage
setting. Corsair's modules can currently claim highest performance among ultra high speed memory offerings, as products at similar clock-speeds from
Cellshock, OCZ Technology and SuperTalent feature higher timings, which means lower performance.
The new Dominator products from Corsair
are equipped with advanced heat-spreader that cools both memory chips and print-circuit board. In addition, Corsair Memory also revealed XMS3 memory
modules operating at 1600MHz with CL7 7-7-20 timings with 1.9V voltage. Even though both PC3-14400 and PC3-12800 memory modules from Corsair feature
interesting combinations of clock-speed, latency settings and voltages, they are unlikely to become popular overnight even among enthusiasts simply
because of the lack of additional performance provided by DDR3 over DDR2. Pricing of the new Corsair Dominator DDR3 and XMS3 memory modules was not
released.

22.08.2007Samsung puts finishing touches on DDR3 memory
Samsung Electronics revealed
that 21 of its DDR3 memory
chips and modules have been
validated by Intel, meaning
they are certified as
compatible with Intel's PC
chip sets. The newer chips
will offer data transfer
speeds up to 1.6Gbps, twice
the memory bandwidth of DDR2.
That means better performance
for both 3-D graphics and
multithreaded applications
that tap the power of
multi-core processors. The
chips will also consume less
power, around 1.5 volts
compared to 1.8 volts for
DDR2, which means longer
notebook battery life, the
hardware giant said.
The South Korean electronics
maker will begin volume
production of DDR3 chips
before the end of next month,
in time to start commercial
sales during the second half
of the year. At Microsoft's
WinHEC conference, the company
will show off a PC with 8GB of
DDR3 memory (4 x 2GB). The
crossover point where
shipments of DDR3 exceed DDR2
will come in early 2009 or
late 2008, depending on how
fast memory makers can drive
down prices, said Tae-Sung
Jung, the senior vice
president of Samsung's memory
division, in November.

15.05.2007CeBIT 2007: Intel to launch Bearlake chipsets for desktops
Intel and its partners will
kick of CeBIT 2007 with the
launch of Intel's Bearlake
family of chipsets for desktop
PCs. The new series introduces
support for DDR3 memory, front
side bus speeds up to 1333MHz
and are designed to support
Intel's upcoming 45nm-process
CPUs, the Core 2 Duo
(Wolfdale) and Core 2 Quad
(Yorkfield).
The
main chipset on show is known
as the P35 and is to be
positioned as the successor to
Intel's current 965 Express
series for mainstream
desktops, according to
sources. Motherboards based on
the P35 will be able to
support FSB speeds up to
1333MHz (up from the 1066MHz
of the 965) which will be
required for several of the
CPUs Intel is planning to
launch in the second half of
the year. The P35 also
introduces support for DDR3
memory which is currently
specified to run at up to
1066MHz, versus DDR2's
800MHz, and so offers greater
memory bandwidth. DDR3 also
operates at just 1.5V compared
to DRR2's 1.8V.
Supplies of DDR3 are,
however, currently low and
prices relatively high, which
does not match the mainstream
position of the P35. For this
reason Intel has also designed
the P35 with optional legacy
support for DDR2 which
motherboard makers can choose
to implement is several ways:
cutting-edge boards that only
support DDR3 but which
increase system costs because
new, expensive RAM needs to be
bought; legacy boards that
support DDR2, but not DDR3,
allowing users to take
advantage of the abundance of
DDR2 now, but may be limited
in the future when DDR3
becomes more common; and
so-called "combo" or
"hybrid" boards which
support both DDR3 and DDR2,
but not at the same time,
meaning that consumers can
save some money by using DDR2
now and upgrade to DDR3 later,
but the system is limited to
only two DIMMs at a time
compared to the four that are
available in the other
implementations

drop in the third quarter of 2008. The nForce 790i is positioned by Nvidia as a high-end product and so the motherboard should attract high-end gamers
who will be willing to pay a premium for DDR3 memory.
