New IBM supercomputer achieves petaflop

IBM has devised a new Blue Gene supercomputer--the Blue Gene/P--that will be capable of processing more than 3 quadrillion operations a second, or 3 petaflops, a possible record. Blue Gene/P is designed to continuously operate at more than 1 petaflop in real-world situations.

Blue Gene/P marks a significant milestone in computing. Last November, the Blue Gene/L was ranked as the most powerful computer on the planet: it topped out at 280 teraflops, or 280 trillion operations a second during continuous operation.

Put another way, a Blue Gene/P operating at a petaflop is performing more operations than a 1.5-mile-high stack of laptops. ..

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: The blue screen of death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows śstopť screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

True blue for OLED screens discovered

Blue, the color that has been holding back OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen technology may be one giant step closer to production. Previously scientists were only able to reproduce red and green OLED's but had stumbled upon finding a material for true blue OLEDs. No longer is that the case as a group of researchers in Korea have claimed to have discovered the true blue OLED. This means that we will hopefully have consumer OLED products on the market sooner rather than later. Why is having OLED on the market important? OLED products have greater field of vision, better color quality and require less power. Overall it's a better value for the consumer and the environment.

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:

First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.

Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.

That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Symantec: No 100% Undetectable Malware

Following another presentation of the Blue Pill, the proof of concept code authored by Joanna Rutkowska, CEO of Invisible Things Lab with the help of Alexander Tereshkin Principal Researcher, at this year's Black Hat, after a similar demonstration in 2006, on 64-bit Windows Vista, Symantec has come out all guns blazing. Peter Ferrie, Senior Principal Researcher, Symantec Advanced Threat Research, opined that there is no such thing as 100% undetectable malware. And that in this context, Rutkowska's Blue Pill makes no exception.

Rutkowska claimed from the get go that the Blue Pill, her example of visualization based malware is undetectable. Thomas Ptacek the co-founder of Matasano Security, Nate Lawson, security expert with Root Labs and Peter Ferrie from Symantec, challenged Rutkowska and the undetectable Blue Pill. Still, although Rutkowska did accept their challenge, the two parties failed to agree on common terms.

In "Black Hat 2007 Las Vegas, I co-presented with Nate Lawson and Thomas Ptacek the detection of hypervisors. Previously, we had asked Joanna Rutkowska to prove her "100% undetectable" claim, but she had declined. However, we did manage to prove that our methods work. Joanna agreed that the TLB timing method that I first described in detail in 2006 works against BluePill. As she understood it, though, she thought that I presented it as a 'foolproof method for "Blue Pill detection"'. While I did present it as a foolproof method, I didn't refer to Blue Pill at all: I said that it would reliably detect a hypervisor, which it does. That it detects Blue Pill is a corollary," stated Ferrie. ..

Office 2007 SP1 Update Availability Clarification

Bobbie Harder: Posting this as I've noted just a little bit of confusion with how Office 2007 SP1 is made available for download after it's release yesterday. As you know, Office 2007 SP1 was released yesterday to Microsoft Update, and to WSUS as part of the Tues, Dec 11th release.

As planned, Office 2007 SP1 was not pushed via Automatic Updates. There has been some confusion where Windows Vista customers are seeing Office 2007 SP1 listed as available with an option to install in their Windows Update control panel applet. The new Vista experience of the Windows Update applet combines the convenience of the Microsoft Update site, by isting all applicable available updates, and the best of the Automatic Updates behavior. This allows users to specify what update types they want to automatically download and install (and when), as well as combines the interactive experience of the Microsoft Update site.

Customers get a supercomputer on the cheap

IBM ratcheted the world of supercomputing up a few notches in June with the Blue Gene/P, a system nearly three times as fast as its predecessor at a cost of US$1.3 million per rack.

But in anticipation of the Blue Gene/P, IBM dropped the price of the Blue Gene/L, to about $800,000 late last year, prompting sales of the older supercomputer to more than double during the first half of this year compared to the second half of 2006, says Herb Schultz, IBM's deep-computing marketing manager.

At its highest price, the Blue Gene/Lcost $1.3 million per rack, same as the P's current price.

"It's still a very viable platform," Schultz says. Among universities, "we've had some really big sales." He named Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and the State University of New York at Stony Brook as two new L-model customers...
