Will replication in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 woo IT?

With the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007 due out at any time, the question is whether or not some of its new replication features will get IT managers to jumpstart their migrations from older Exchange platforms on to the new messaging server.

Microsoft has promised Exchange Server 2007 SP1 for the fourth quarter of this year. The big new feature will be standby continuous replication, or SCR, which lets IT managers replicate an Exchange Server to another location, which could then be activated if there were a disaster at the company's main location.

Exchange Server 2007 came with local continuous replication and cluster continuous replication. The LCR copies the Exchange Server onto another location on the same server, while CCR gives IT manager's instant fail-over to another server at the same location. The addition of SCR means IT managers will have a third copy of the Exchange Server at a remote location, although it has to be activated manually.

Microsoft Ad: 'Maybe we'd rather go PC'

Yeap, that's right. Microsoft has released the third edition of their 'Laptop Hunters' ad campaign, following on from the first and second. The first ad featured a woman named Lauren, and the second was a guy named Giampaolo, and, you guessed it, they chose a PC. Keeping with the trend, you won't be surprised that the stars of this ad, Lisa and Jackson, choose a PC as well. You know the deal; they're given $1500 to find and buy a laptop, and they keep what they buy, and any change left over. Lisa wants a computer that is fast, has a big hard drive and Jackson wants a good gaming computer.

Antispyware demo turns malware double agent

A strain of malware disguised as antispyware has become the latest double-agent in multi-step "convergence" crime online.

The scam, which prompts users to download malware by posing as an antispyware demo, has proliferated dramatically, as reported incidences of its distribution have increased by 1000 percent in the last month, according to Don Jackson, senior analyst at SecureWorks.

Jackson believes the scam is being hosted by hackers using Russian Business Network services (RBN), an illegal ISP responsible for hosting a significant amount of malicious and criminal content on the Web.

NY family has to pay the RIAA $7,000 after court case

The most loved organization in the world, the RIAA, has won a case against a New York family for illegally downloading music. The case was originally filed against Patricia Santangelo, 46, a mother of five, who resides in Wappingers Falls, N.Y but was later dropped and re-filled against her two sons. Rather than taking the settlement agreement the two sons and mother decided to fight the RIAA and nearly $15,000 was raised by online sympathizers to help fight the industry. The result, nearly 4 years later, is that the family will have to pay $7000.00 for songs downloaded that included "‘MMMBop' by Hanson and ‘Beat It' by Michael Jackson.

Is Microsoft Overstretching the Halo IP?

Between the eventual Halo movie from Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp, the Halo mini-films (also from Neil), Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo 1 PC and Mac, Halo 2 Vista, the Peter Jackson/Bungie Studios mystery collaboration and Peter Moore comparing Halo to the Star Wars franchise, is Microsoft overstretching the Halo brand as an IP for the company?

We proposed this question to Shane Kim, head of Microsoft Game Studios, at E3 last week. Look forward to our full interview with Kim, including his thoughts on whether Silicon Knights' Dennis Dyack goes too far when responding to critical forum posts about Too Human, tomorrow morning on 1UP.

Jackson Agrees to Halo Movie Delay

It was too good to be true wasn't it? One of the worlds biggest directors joined hands with one of the biggest games of the last generation, only a pesky Italian plumber could put a leak in these works. Halo the movie has officially been postponed until new backing can be found to fund the project.

Film studios Fox and Universal pulled out last month, but the film-makers vowed to continue with the project. Now Microsoft says it has "mutually agreed" to delay the film with Jackson and his co-producer Fran Walsh. "We are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," it said in a statement.

There had been rumours that costs associated with the film could rise to 踜m, after an initial budget had been set at around 趚m. The film-makers said the studios pulled out after they and Microsoft refused to reduce their deals on the project.

Infected job search sites lead to info theft for 46,000

A security researcher at SecureWorks Inc. has uncovered a cache of financial and personal data that was stolen from about 46,000 individuals by a variant of Prg, a Trojan program gaining notoriety for its quick-change behaviors. The stolen data includes bank and credit card account information and Social Security numbers as well as usernames and passwords for online accounts. Many of the victims were infected and reinfected as they visited several leading online job search sites, including the popular Monster.com.

Don Jackson, the SecureWorks researcher who found the collection, said it was the largest single cache of data he discovered from the Prg Trojan, a piece of malware first seen in the wild in June. According to Jackson, the server he examined is still collecting stolen data, with up to 10,000 victims feeding it information at any particular time. It's not entirely clear how the stolen information in the latest attacks is being used, but Jackson says that the kind of data that the Trojan has cached seems to indicate that the data is being stolen for identity theft purposes.

Is Michael Dell The Devil?

Is Dell CEO Michael Dell, who is wooing solution providers with a nascent channel program and at the same time launching a managed services offensive, devil or angel?

That was the question ConnectWise CEO Arnie Bellini took head on at the kickoff Friday of the third annual ConnectWise Partner summit. To dramatize just how he views the Dell threat, Bellini showed a slide of a CRN Cover story titled "Dell Hits The Wall" and drew devil horns and a devil goatee on the magazine photo of Dell CEO Michael Dell.

"I respect Michael Dell," said Bellini before a packed Tampa Marriott ballroom of 600 ConnectWise software and solution provider partners, many of whom hooted and roared with laughter at the Dell Devil likeness. "He is an aggressive, capitalististic entrepreneur. That is what we are dealing with though. It is not his fault. If we don't take control of our marketplace it is going to be our fault."
