Mac Mojo: Audio/Video support in Messenger for Mac next year

One of the nifty features missing in the Messenger for Mac is Audio/Video (A/V) support. It is not possible to do a video or audio chat using the Messenger for Mac. The recent update, Messenger for Mac 7 added A/V support for corporate services (works with Office Live Communications Server 2007) but not for personal services(Windows Live Services). Mac Mojo, the Office for Mac team announced today that A/V support for personal services will be available next year as an update on Messenger for Mac. Mac Mojo team said that the new release of Windows Live Messenger, which is currently in beta delivers a new A/V protocol which makes easier to deliver A/V support in Messenger for Mac.

A Chat about Messenger

The Office for Mac Team Blog: Hi, my name is Anav and I work on the Messenger for Mac product in Mac BU. I follow the blog and newsgroup comments out there and I know there are questions on the status of Messenger for Mac, and more specifically the status of Audio/Video (AV) support. Its been a while since weve given you an update on Messenger, so here it goes¦

First, let me start by saying, Messenger for Mac is alive and well and we plan to continue investing in the application. In August we released Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, which introduced support for Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian languages. Messenger for Mac 6.0.3 is also the version that will ship with Office 2008. A couple of weeks ago we kicked off a closed beta program of Messenger for Mac 7.0 for corporate customers*, and made great progress in the implementation of AV in Messenger for Mac.

Microsoft on Messenger for the Mac: it ain't dead!

Scott McNulty: Our good friends in Redmond dropped us a note concerning Messenger for the Mac's future (based on this post). The Mac BU wants all Mac users to rest assured that Messenger for the Mac 6.0 will be included with Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac. Not only is Messenger for the Mac 6.0 alive and well, the Mac BU's crack team of coders are hard at work on Messenger for Mac 7.0 which will have long awaited audio/video capabilities (and which is soon to be released into the hands of some lucky enterprise beta participants, mostly to test out the Office Communication Server 2007 integration).

This is welcome news to me because I use Messenger for the Mac everyday at my day job. I couldn't do my work without it (and who wants to run a VM for an IM client? Not this guy).

Microsoft releases Messenger for Mac Update

Microsoft released yesterday an update, dubbed as version 6.0.1, to the Macintosh version of its instant messaging client, called Microsoft Messenger for Mac. The new release introduces very few changes, though contains its fair load of bug fixes, mainly in the sign-in area, which was a problem on 6.0. Most users experiencing problems with the sign-in process should now be fine and do it without a problem.

For the recall, Messenger for Mac is a somewhat slimmed down version of Windows Live Messenger aimed at running as well on PowerPC-based macs as Intel-based macs. Though its feature set isn't as impressive as its Windows counterpart, it still features the basic IM options, and the recently introduced Yahoo! Messenger interoperability.

WLMessenger 9.0 slated for late 2008, early 2009

Despite version 8.5 being in private beta form, Microsoft has reportedly already started on Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Andrew Jenks, a Microsoft employee speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology revealed that the WLMessenger 9.0 is planned for availability towards the end of 2008, but it could slip into 2009. A new Microsoft application programming interface, closely tied to the 9.0 client, will permit third-party developers to build upon Windows Live Messenger 9.0, creating customized versions of the instant messaging client or even programs that take advantage of the features available. Apparently, developers will be able to access a technical preview of the API concomitantly with the MIX08 conference next year.

In addition, Microsoft is also looking to include the first beta of the application programming interface with the finalized version of Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Over at Redmond, very early, internal builds of WLMessenger 9.0 already include some of the components that will make up the final API. One aspect that the softare giant is hard at work on is the interoperability of WLMessenger 9.0 with alternative instant messaging clients such as AIM, Gtalk and ICQ, in a similar manner to the integration with Yahoo Messenger. As well, while Apple users will not be getting an upgrade to the MSN Messenger for Mac, they will be able to access a new client designed with Mac OS X in mind.

Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0

Microsoft has just released an update to their Messenger application for the Mac, the first universal binary to leave the Redmond camp

Messenger for Mac 6.0 makes it easy to take advantage of the full power of instant messaging, and it is a Universal application built to run on both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macs. This update allows Messenger for Mac users to:By using Messenger for Mac, you can see when your friends, family, coworkers, and associates at other companies are online and then communicate with them instantly. Messenger for Mac offers two types of communication services - a personal account and a corporate account.

It has also been confirmed that audio and video capabilities are coming to Messenger for Mac.

The good news is that I can now publicly say that we are adding A/V support to a future release of Messenger for the Mac. I've personally seen the code and heard some of the status reports. I can't speak about any sort of version or date of availability, but it is coming!

Windows Live Messenger celebrates 10 years, hits 330m users

On July 22, 1999 Microsoft launched what would become the world's most popular instant messenging service, currently with over 330 active users every month. Previously named MSN Messenger, it was released to work on the Windows operating system platform for users to instantly chat over the Internet using Microsoft's .NET Messenger Service. Microsoft later re-branded MSN Messenger into Windows Live Messenger to merge it with its other Live services back in December 13, 2005. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) has gone through significant protocol changes and face lifts over its many versions in the last 10 years, ending up at Windows Live Messenger 2009 (designated to be called 9.0).

Windows Live Messenger 9.0

Forget about Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and 8.5, Microsoft is cooking Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Currently, Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is in the very early stages of baking, but this does not mean that the Redmond company is not perfecting the receipt of its instant messaging client. Andrew Jenks, a Microsoft employee speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology revealed that Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is planned for availability towards the end of 2008, but it could slip into 2009.

LiveSide, quoting Ampcoder, focused on Jenks' announcement of a new Microsoft application programming interface designed to be joined at the hip with the 9.0 version of Windows Live Messenger. The API will permit third-party developers to build upon Windows Live Messenger 9.0, creating customized versions of the instant messaging client or even programs that take advantage of the features available. The details are scarce, but developers apparently will be able to access a technical preview of the API concomitantly with the MIX08 conference next year.

Rumor: New Mac Mini coming to Macworld 2009

Apple will launch an upgrade to its low-end desktop, the Mac Mini, at January's Macworld Expo in San Francisco, according to an Apple corporate employee who contacted Wired.com. That's where CEO Steve Jobs traditionally launches major products during his famous keynotes (assuming he does indeed show up). Messenger 9, GTalk integration, Messenger API, new client for Mac OS X

In a presentation to the Georgia Institute of Technology's IEEE Student Branch yesterday, Microsoft employee and Georgia Tech graduate Andrew Jenks had some surprises in store. "It wasn't originally planned to be announced yesterday, but when he found out he was coming down (since this is his alma mater) he wanted to announce it", so instead of his planned talk on "Life and development at Microsoft", he spent the hour announcing a new Messenger API - "the Tech Preview will be released during MIX 08 and the Beta 1 will be released when WLMessenger 9 ships in late 08 or early 09", according to Steven Hollingsworth (known online at Neowin and elsewhere as AmpCoder), a Georgia Tech student and IEEE Student Chapter member who attended the presentation.

Windows Live Messenger Goes Final and More

After a year in the making, the Windows Live Messenger production has come to an end, and to the delight of thousands of people.

The Download Page has been updated with build 353 (the final version) and is available for download now. It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but it's presumable that the countless bugs testers received in previous betas have been resolved; most notably several serious problems that were spotted when running it with Windows 7.

Complimenting the release of WLM 2009, the "Messenger Plus!" team has announced a release of the compatible (build 4.80) version of the patcher to be before the end of the month.

This seems promising. Hopefully the two will work well together, and we can FINALLY get what we've been asking for in the entire WLM experience.
