Mac OSX upgrade problems

Apple released a statement warning users upgrading from Leopard, about the newest available upgrade for Mac OSX to 10.5.6. The problem occurs from an incomplete software update getting into the update process that can cause Mac OSX to cause errors during the "Configuring Installation" window process. Apple recommends users, if they haven't already, to force the software update process to quit the download, remove the partial update from your library and re-download the update. This problem is also been found in the standalone update from Apple's web site, and the combo update. If users still faced with problems updating their Mac OSX machine, they are encouraged to contact Apple with related issues.

Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta program frustrates testers

The first Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta build was released in November 2007. The release brought the ability to sign into Messenger from up to four computers at once, the ability to choose customized sounds for your sign-in and for your contacts, URLs in Personal Status Messages, and Animated Display Pictures. However, features requested across the many Messenger programs such as Tabbed Conversations and the ability to decline a group conversation invite were nowhere to be seen.

Windows Vista and Mac OSX see surge in consumer use

While businesses and corporate entities may have little interest in using either Vista or Mac OSX, both are gaining popularity and market share but only in the area related to home or home office use which is both good and bad.

Its good in the fact that Vista now has a 10% market share in computers that are connected to the Internet, its bad that corporations are either not going to deploy Vista or have delayed deployments so much that by the time it comes around again, Windows 7 may be out.

Mac OSX now has something in the area of a 7% market share, Mac use has seen excellent growth over the past year but has not been without its share of problems. Large corporations would never deploy OSX on a wide scale so that is not a concern there.

Windows Live Messenger Screens Removed

Some members have expressed a deep concern about Neowin showcasing screenshots of Windows Live Messenger 9, they say it breaches the non disclosure agreement (NDA) they signed with Microsoft.

While this new version is most definitely not a state secret, and widely known on most if not all tech related websites (even as far as listing the new features), we have decided to pull the screenshots due to claims that the beta could be comprimised should it not remain low-key. I know that new software from Microsoft such as Live Messenger generates a lot of interest for those not lucky enough to be on the beta, but we reckon it's a good idea to wait until Microsoft formally announces the beta of Windows Live Messenger and makes it available to a wider audience.

So for now, good luck Live Messenger team and those who are testing it!

Update: I'd like to point out to avoid confusion that we were not contacted by Microsoft, I consulted an MS contact on this matter myself.

Messenger Plus! Live Public Beta?

Patchou has posted a thread on the Messenger Plus! Forums saying that we can expect a public beta version of Messenger Plus! Live within the next 30 Days.

Patchou has stated that the beta version will be a "pretty reliable product". I think this is a good move, as Windows Live Messenger is still in beta it will be good for the public to test out Messenger Plus! Live.

Patchou has noticed the huge demand for the product, and because of Windows Live Messenger's big new promotion more and more people want Messenger Plus! Live.

The beta will be as stable as possible, and not be meant for reporting bugs etc, but to make people happy using the software.

On Vista, OSX and security researchers

Robert Hensing: So I made an interesting observation at Cansec last week.  By day 3 I realized that I was the sole presenter running Vista.  Hell I may have been the sole *attendee* running Vista.  In fact if I had to break out the presenter laptop OS's it would go something like this:

  1. 50% OSX

  2. 34% Windows XP

  3. 15% random Linux distros

  4. 1% Vista (me)

If you add attendees to the mix the Windows  XP numbers go up a bit and the OSX numbers may go down (i.e. it may be 40% OSX / 40% XP).

Yahoo on Tuesday rolled out a beta version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, cleaning up the client's user interface and making it easier to call contacts and send text messages. A Chat about Messenger

The Office for Mac Team Blog: Hi, my name is Anav and I work on the Messenger for Mac product in Mac BU. I follow the blog and newsgroup comments out there and I know there are questions on the status of Messenger for Mac, and more specifically the status of Audio/Video (AV) support. Its been a while since weve given you an update on Messenger, so here it goes¦

First, let me start by saying, Messenger for Mac is alive and well and we plan to continue investing in the application. In August we released Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, which introduced support for Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian languages. Messenger for Mac 6.0.3 is also the version that will ship with Office 2008. A couple of weeks ago we kicked off a closed beta program of Messenger for Mac 7.0 for corporate customers*, and made great progress in the implementation of AV in Messenger for Mac.

PINNED: Microsoft Updates Live Messenger Beta

Microsoft on Tuesday began rolling out a new Windows Live Messenger build to beta testers, streamlining the client's interface and adding a number of new features such as integration with Windows Live Contacts. The release, numbered 8.0.566, also supports colorization of the entire Messenger window.

For now, Live Messenger remains a private beta test, but Microsoft is encouraging users to invite as many people as possible, and the company is reportedly accepting new applications within 24 hours through ideas.live.com. Developers aren't offering a final release date, but say it will occur later this year.

Mac Mojo: Audio/Video support in Messenger for Mac next year

One of the nifty features missing in the Messenger for Mac is Audio/Video (A/V) support. It is not possible to do a video or audio chat using the Messenger for Mac. The recent update, Messenger for Mac 7 added A/V support for corporate services (works with Office Live Communications Server 2007) but not for personal services(Windows Live Services). Mac Mojo, the Office for Mac team announced today that A/V support for personal services will be available next year as an update on Messenger for Mac. Mac Mojo team said that the new release of Windows Live Messenger, which is currently in beta delivers a new A/V protocol which makes easier to deliver A/V support in Messenger for Mac.

Messenger 9.0 Beta to close by end of month

Mess.be: Today we, and probably everyone else who is an official BETA tester for the 9.0 client, has received an e-mail from Microsoft about the recent BETA program. According to the e-mail, over 1000 bugs and suggestions have been posted, and well over 5000 messages on the newsgroups! The e-mail continues to explain the long (unusual) silence over the past few months:

"For the past several months we've been gathering feedback from not only you, but also from past beta testers' comments, other external Windows Live Messenger customers, and Microsoft employees. We've compiled a thorough list of feedback, and it's now time to shift our focus to building the new version of Windows Live Messenger. Therefore, on June 24, we will close the official beta testing program.".

The Messenger team looks dedicated to taking a look at all the bugs and suggestions which have been posted so far, promising to have process them all by the end of the week.

Windows Live Messenger Managed Beta Ends

A few minutes ago, Microsoft sent a very special e-mail message to all Windows Live Messenger Managed Beta testers, which marks the end of the program. The e-mail message mentions a few of the improved areas in Windows Live Messenger and of course, thanks all beta-testers for their bug reporting and such.

Quote:

Dear Windows Live Messenger Beta Tester,

As we get closer to the final release of Windows Live Messenger 8.0, it is time that the managed beta come to a close. Thank you for all your wonderful contributions to this beta and for putting the voice of the customer into our best version of Messenger yet. Here are few of the many areas where your feedback made a difference:

-Improved sign-in performance. Thanks to your feedback, Windows Live Messenger 8.0 has the fastest sign-in of any version of Messenger.
-New UI and color changing. After many tries, your feedback helped us "get it right."
-Great new features such as Sharing Folders, Offline IM and Live Contacts. You found many great bugs that improved the quality of each of these.
-Overall quality. Your relentless testing and reporting of memory leaks, crashes and UI glitches greatly improved this version of Messenger.
