12.07.2009Windows Live Messenger celebrates 10 years, hits 330m users
On July 22, 1999 Microsoft launched what would become the world's most popular instant messenging service, currently with over 330 active users
every month. Previously named MSN Messenger, it was released to work on the Windows operating system platform for users to instantly chat over the
Internet using Microsoft's .NET Messenger Service. Microsoft later re-branded MSN Messenger into Windows Live Messenger to merge it with its
other Live services back in December 13, 2005. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) has gone through significant protocol changes and face lifts over its
many versions in the last 10 years, ending up at Windows Live Messenger 2009 (designated to be called 9.0).

Compared with multi-conversation, Messenger Group is an existing group with each member in, members can talk together at
any time without creating a temporary multi-conversation. Messenger Group makes a group of people connecting closer, no matter whether they are on
your Messenger contact list. You can create a group for a team, a department or a company to chat online together.

15.12.2008Windows Live Messenger Goes Final and More
After a year in the making, the Windows Live Messenger production has come to an end, and to the delight of thousands of people.
The
Download Page has been updated with build 353 (the final version) and is
available for download now. It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but it's presumable that the countless bugs testers received in previous betas
have been resolved; most notably several serious problems that were spotted when running it with Windows 7.
Complimenting the release of
WLM 2009, the "Messenger Plus!" team has announced a release of the compatible (build 4.80) version of the patcher to be before the end of the
month.
This seems promising. Hopefully the two will work well together, and we can FINALLY get what we've been asking for in the entire
WLM experience.

24.08.2005A Chat about Messenger
The Office for Mac Team Blog: Hi, my name is Anav and I work on the Messenger for Mac product in Mac BU. I follow the blog and newsgroup comments out
there and I know there are questions on the status of Messenger for Mac, and more specifically the status of Audio/Video (AV) support. Its been a
while since weve given you an update on Messenger, so here it goes¦
First, let me start by saying, Messenger for Mac is alive and
well and we plan to continue investing in the application. In August we released Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, which introduced support for Danish,
Finnish, and Norwegian languages. Messenger for Mac 6.0.3 is also the version that will ship with Office 2008. A couple of weeks ago we kicked off a
closed beta program of Messenger for Mac 7.0 for corporate customers*, and made great progress in the implementation of AV in Messenger for Mac.

01.08.2008Mac Mojo: Audio/Video support in Messenger for Mac next year
One of the nifty features missing in the Messenger for Mac is Audio/Video (A/V) support. It is not possible to do a video or audio chat using the
Messenger for Mac. The recent update, Messenger for Mac 7 added A/V support for corporate services (works with Office Live Communications Server 2007)
but not for personal services(Windows Live Services). Mac Mojo, the Office for Mac team announced today that A/V support for personal services will be
available next year as an update on Messenger for Mac. Mac Mojo team said that the new release of Windows Live Messenger, which is currently in beta
delivers a new A/V protocol which makes easier to deliver A/V support in Messenger for Mac.

12.04.2006WLMessenger 9.0 slated for late 2008, early 2009
Despite version 8.5 being in private beta form, Microsoft has reportedly already started on Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Andrew Jenks, a Microsoft
employee speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology revealed that the WLMessenger 9.0 is planned for availability towards the end of 2008, but it
could slip into 2009. A new Microsoft application programming interface, closely tied to the 9.0 client, will permit third-party developers to build
upon Windows Live Messenger 9.0, creating customized versions of the instant messaging client or even programs that take advantage of the features
available. Apparently, developers will be able to access a technical preview of the API concomitantly with the MIX08 conference next year.
In addition, Microsoft is also looking to include the first beta of the application programming interface with the finalized version of Windows Live
Messenger 9.0. Over at Redmond, very early, internal builds of WLMessenger 9.0 already include some of the components that will make up the final API.
One aspect that the softare giant is hard at work on is the interoperability of WLMessenger 9.0 with alternative instant messaging clients such as
AIM, Gtalk and ICQ, in a similar manner to the integration with Yahoo Messenger. As well, while Apple users will not be getting an upgrade to the MSN
Messenger for Mac, they will be able to access a new client designed with Mac OS X in mind.
