have. As youll recall from my previous post, my laptop is loaded up with 8GB of memory. So I thought it would be cool to fire up a bunch of virtual
machines to see how effectively Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V allocate and juggle memory. I was able to get fourteen operating system instances
running at the same time. The host OS is of course Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 with Hyper-V RC1. In the screenshot, youll notice I am running
six instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x64 and seven instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x86. Paging and disk I/O really went up after I
fired up VM number eight.

Before I go any further, a few disclaimers and notes. First off, I’ve carried out this test on a single system
running Windows Vista Home Premium on which Firefox had not been previously installed. The system has 2GB of RAM. Both Firefox 2.0.0.9 and Firefox
3.0 b 1 were installed fresh using a standard install. For each test I visited the same web pages and did my best to make the browsing the same on
both versions.
OK, with that out of the way, on with the tests. I simulated three different browsing scenarios:
- Loading a five
pages into the browser
- Loading a single page and leaving the browser for 10 minutes
- Loading 12 pages into the browser and wait 5

21.11.2007Tracing the memory leak: Is it Firefox 3?
Yesterday, we mentioned that we've been noticing recent versions of Firefox, including 3.0.5, have exhibited the memory leak problems that used to
plague Firefox 2. We are noticing this on both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1.
We'd also noticed that systems where the add-on Tab Mix Plus
was installed, did not appear to exhibit the same memory leak. Today, we uninstalled Tab Mix Plus (reluctantly, because we like it) from one system.
On that system, the memory use pattern has
changed, perhaps moderated, though we're not sure the leak has gone away. It now appears to be
slower than in our tests yesterday, and from time to time, something in Firefox does clean up parts of memory from time to time. In one test,
we had two Firefox windows open with seven tabs open in one of them, a dozen in the other -- a pretty full slate. Task Manager is showing us that
Firefox grabs memory in one-megabyte chunks per second, for about a minute at a time, and then leveling back out to about 300,000 KB.
So if
it's not a leak right now, at least it's a
fight, and we'll let you know what else we find...

So there have been a few issues we have seen with .NET 2.0 when it is running on large 64-bit machines that have a lot of memory. This is
commonly seen if the machine in question has at least 4GB of RAM per CPU. So like 32 GB of RAM with 8 processors.
There are
a few issues that have been addressed around this situation. There has been a hotfix to address one issue:

As many of you know, the
Windows Home Server Connector does not currently support x64 home computers, which has caused a lot of frustration and angst amongst early adopters of
the x64 platform. Microsoft have previously announced that they would provide x64 support for machines running Windows Vista (
check out our Q&A with
the WHS Team for more) - those of you running Windows XP x64 will have to upgrade, unfortunately.

Microsoft released on Wednesday new test versions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista Service Pack, two highly anticipated technologies that are
scheduled to be released early next year. Microsoft also revealed partner resources to prepare customers for the release of the server OS, which the
company plans to release to manufacturing on Feb. 27, 2008, the same day as a joint-launch event that also will promote SQL Server 2008 and Visual
Studio 2008. Combined, the three mark Microsoft's major product release cycle for the year, although the products are not scheduled to be released
simultaneously.
Vista SP1 is expected to be available around the same time, but in a two-part release, the company said on Wednesday.
According to a post on the Windows Vista Team Blog, a stand-alone installer will be released to the Web in both x86 and x64 versions for the following
languages: English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese. About eight to 12 weeks after this release, all of the remaining Vista languages will be
released in both x86 and x64 versions.

version 1.5 to coincide with
the general release of Windows
Vista, it omitted one
important fact: the product
will not support Vista x64 or
XP x64. I received an email
this morning from a reader
telling me that the OneCare
v1.5 beta would not install on
his Vista test machine as it
was just for 32-bit systems.
"It would be nice, now that
64-bit Vista is set to go, to
specify if the software will
run properly in 64-bit," he
said. "Has this changed in
the final release? It would be
nice to know as I have OneCare
on all three home PCs, and
plan on upgrading all of them
to 64-bit Vista," he said.
So I asked
Microsoft, which confirmed
that, indeed, OneCare v1.5
would not run on Vista x64 or
Windows XP x64 for that
matter, "although it will
support 32-bit Windows on x64
hardware," a Microsoft
spokesperson told me. The
spokesperson was also pretty
non-committal about the
possibility of x64 support
going forward, saying "we
continually evolve OneCare to
meet customer demand, though
we have no further specifics
to share at this time around
potential support for x64 in
the future." My colleague Joe
Wilcox spoke to Gina Narkunas,
the lead product manager for
Windows Live OneCare, this
evening from London. She told
him that "it wasn't a
business priority to support
64-bit," because there is
"no consumer demand" for a
64-bit right now.

memory usage of Chrome and Firefox 3.5 (along with Safari and Opera)
over a series of 150 Web page loads using an automated script. Firefox 3.5 shows the lowest memory usage in all categories, including average memory
usage, maximum memory usage, and final memory usage. Chrome uses over 1 GB of memory due to its process architecture. Safari 4 and Opera show memory
usage degradation over time, while Chrome and Firefox 3.5 are more reliable in freeing memory to the OS.

Andrzej Lipka: When you try to open the Distributed Application Designer from a console installed on an x64 server you may see the console crashes
with .NET error in the Application Log (something of type badimageformat).
This seems to be a bug in SP1 RC. To work around it
use a console from an x86-32 (32 bit) machine to connect to the x64 server.
