Mythbusting Windows Vista - Memory Management
Windows Vista is well on it's way and everyday more and more information is released. A lot of this information is misunderstood, regurgitated and out of the ashes many a myth has risen on Vista. I'd like to welcome a special guest author, Ned Gnitchel, who will be presenting a number of articles over the next little while debunking some of these myths. Ned works for a large software company and is a specialist in OS Internals, Directory Services and Collaboration.

With Windows Vista coming soon to a retail channel near you, one of the important questions to ask is, "How much memory does it really need?" There are the official minimum requirements of 512 MB, but we all know that minimum requirements don't translate to a great experience.

As reported by Techworld, Snow Leopard, Apple's highly anticipated new operating system, lacks basic security features that are found in Windows
XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 says Charlie Miller, a noted security researcher. Address Space Layout Randomization, commonly referred to as ASLR,
randomly assigns data to the memory to make it more difficult for hackers to locate the of critical operating system functions. Charlie Miller of
Baltimore-based Independent Security Evaluators who many people may remember from when he successfully hacked a fully patched Macbook in seconds, was
disappointed upon hearing that Apple did little to improve ASLR from Leopard to Snow Leopard. "Apple didn't change anything.

02.08.2009Leopard vs. Vista: Feature Chart Showdown
There no doubt,
Vista and
Leopard are both
extremely advanced, feature rich consumer operating systems. But way back in January when Vista launched we knew we had little choice but pit the two
in a head to head chartngraph Thunderdome competition. We know we're not even going to be able to stop the epic fanboy arguments about break out over
this one, so we just ask that you try to keep it fair. Leopard vs. Vista: it's on.
NOTE: This chart is only for out of box
features, and does not take into account 3rd party software. We realize that with a few choice apps this chart would look completely different -- but
that's not what we're after here.
- Green indicates a category with
more and/or better features, and generally a better user experience.
- Red indicates that a category not quite up to snuff. Either it doesn't yet exist in the OS or it just sucks more than the alternative.
- † (dagger) indicates a category we think are too subjective to judge. These will not have any clear winner.
- ‡ (double dagger) indicates a category that is in many ways subjective, but that we feel one category is still ahead. Your own
tastes may vary.
- Notes help out with a little background, where appropriate.

06.11.2009Apple reportedly to postpone Leopard to support Vista
Apple is expected to launch
its next generation Leopard
operating system in April.
According to unnamed industry
sources, however, the release
of the new OS will be
postponed to October in order
for Apple to ensure that
Macintosh PCs that run the
software are also capable of
running Microsoft's new
Windows Vista operating
system. The sources pointed
out that the launch delay has
nothing to do with software
design problems with Leopard.
Leopard would support Windows
Vista through an integrated
version of its Boot Camp
software. Boot Camp is an
Apple software application
that currently assists in the
installation of Windows XP on
computers using Apple's
latest OS. According to the
sources, the company hopes
with support for Vista, Mac
computers using the new OS can
grab more market share
compared to just supporting
Windows XP.
I
personally don't see Apple
delaying Leopard for Vista.
Maybe they'll offer a Boot
Camp update later on, but I
doubt they will delay the
release by half a year. On the
other hand, if it does happen,
I will find it very
hypocritical of Apple,
considering their anti-Vista
advertisements.

27.06.2008Microsoft denies Sony's Vista hardware claims
Microsoft has denied Sony's
claim that the current release
of Vista supports neither
Intel's Turbo Memory
technology nor hybrid hard
drives.
The spat
between the companies arose
after Sony revealed to
ZDNet.co.uk that it would not
include Turbo Memory an
embedded flash memory module

will not allow the benefits of
Turbo Memory to be utilised

start-up time. Most
manufacturers are ready to
release Centrino Pro notebooks
that include Turbo Memory,

efficiency and the limitations
it places on users who want to

boost performance...

07.06.2007Memory Management - x86 Virtual Address Space
In previous posts, we've discussed the
Basics of Memory Management,
Pool Resources
and of course the
/3GB
Switch. Today we're going to take a look at the Virtual Address Space Layouts on a 32-bit system. We'll cover the 64-bit system specifics in a
later post. First, let's cover some basic concepts dealing with the Virtual Address Space in Windows.
There are three main
types of data that are mapped into the virtual address space in Windows:
- per-process private code and data
- sessionwide code and
data
- systemwide code and data
As we discussed previously, each process has its own private address space that cannot be accessed by
other processes unless they have permission to open the process for read or write access. Threads within the process cannot access virtual addresses
outside the private address space unless they map to shared memory sections or use cross-process memory functions.

31.08.2009Its payback time: If the Vista team could write ad copy ¦
Apple advocates are doing the unthinkable: Theyre complaining publicly about a new Apple product release.
Even
typically staunch Mac backers are admitting that
Apple’s new Leopard operating system is not perfect. It might even be as

however, is slightly slower than it is with Leopard, at least on the MacBook Pro we used as our test machine. As the OS is now a pure 64-bit operating

27.08.2009Parents the winner in Leopard, Vista showdown
In a showdown of new parental controls in Apple's Leopard versus Microsoft's year-old Vista, there's one clear winner--the parent.
When Apple
unveiled its
newest operating system on October 26, the computer maker made its first major overture to parents by infusing Leopard with a slick set of child
controls. New settings help parents manage a child's time online, block use of certain Web sites or applications like instant chat or iTunes, and
watch over what kids do and who they communicate with when Mom and Dad aren't around.
Apple was playing catch-up to
Microsoft's parental
controls for Vista, which the computer giant unveiled in January. It, too, made its biggest push into the parental-control market with Vista,
adding the same finely tuned features, so much so that parental advocates say Vista's parent controls are a reason to buy the software. And that's
true of Apple now, too.
