Also being reported is that Apple ordered "5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year." America to crack down on blogger payola

US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing endorsements.

TV Hz game gets taken to new levels, for no reason at all

LG is taking the Hz game to the next level with its TrueMotion LCD TV. LG will be showing off its overkill 480Hz TV at this years CES. While Sony just got done with an advertisement campaign for its 240 Hz TVs it goes to show that Hz is the new mega-pixel race. Our technology history has been filled with many size races; always based around the idea that bigger is better. You can look back to the early days of AMD vs Intel where clock speed was the defining factor of a CPU, mega-pixel race for digital cameras and now the Hz race for televisions.

Verizon all clear to become the nation's largest carrier

Verizon has finally been cleared to acquire regional carrier Alltel. The Department of Justice, FCC and FTC have all given the appropriate thumbs up to allow the mega carrier to acquire the regional carrier. Verizon did not make it over the governmental hurdles unscathed. Verizon did have to relinquish a few region spectrum licenses among other concessions to obtain Alltel but largely the mega carrier will come out on top. The combined user base of Verizon and Alltel will top out around 80 million users; easily trumping AT&T's 71 million subscribers. Unfortunately at the end of the day it's the consumer who looses out on this deal.

Mega-D sticks it to Storm in spam contest

A botnet used solely to send junk e-mail promoting penis enlargement products has taken over from the Storm botnet as the most prolific sender of spam, according to security researchers.

The botnet Mega-D -- so named because of the products being offered by the spam it generates -- now accounts for 32 percent of all spam being captured by security firm, Marshal.

"This exceeds the level of spam being generated by the Storm botnet at its height, which was at 21 percent of the total spam we captured," Marshal VP of products Bradley Anstis told ZDNet.com.au. "Storm has now reduced to less than two percent of the spam we're tracking at the moment."

Even with Vista SP1, Hackers Still Crack WGA

The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.

The workaround is designed to be integrated with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

Apple issues mega-monster security update

Apple Tuesday issued a record-breaking security update that patched nearly 90 vulnerabilities in both its own code and the third-party applications it bundles with its Tiger and Leopard operating systems. Security Update 2008-002 plugged 87 holes in the client and server editions of Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS 10.5, This single update's total patch count nearly equaled half of all the fixes Apple released in 2007, and easily dwarfed the biggest updates that year, both which saw 40 or more bugs patched.

"What a dizzy double take," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security in an e-mail. "Right on the heels of an unprecedented giant Safari fix, we now have a frighteningly large set of updates for OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.2." Earlier today, Apple updated its Safari browser for both Mac and Windows, patching 13 vulnerabilities.

Regional cell phone carriers, a thing of the past

A growing trend for mega-corps is to buy out relative mom and pop companies to expand. Specifically, in the cell phone industry, any company other than Verizon and ATT should fear a buyout. Local regional carriers are quickly becoming a thing of the past and we the consumers are the ones losing out.

The trend began way back when ATT was broken up into the "baby bells". The once mega-corp was split up to provide more competition in the market place. A quick glance at the industry will show that ATT has regained its stature except for a few of the baby bells but Verizon has also risen as a juggernaut.

ATT recently acquired Centennial Wireless and Verizon acquired Alltel Wireless but both are awaiting governmental clearance. While it is unlikely that either will be denied the acquisition because there is at least one other mega-carrier in the market, this diminishes competition for the consumer.

Verizon and ATT will continue to grow at phenomenal rates. With Sprint haemorrhaging customers it's only a matter of time until Verizon makes a bid for the "now network." ATT and Verizon are both in a head to head race to see who the biggest carrier is; both claim to be either the largest or the best but neither can claim both.
How does one grow in this market place? The simple answer is to purchase your competition. Verizon and ATT have huge bank rolls that allow them to simply dominate any regional carrier. The reason regional carriers are selling out is because they know in the long run they can't compete. New technologies such as LTE and WiMax require a massive amount of capital to update ones infrastructure, capital that regional carriers don't have. If you can't remain competitive on speed you have to lower your prices, lower prices means lower margins and lower net income.

The regional carrier is a dying breed compared to the mega national carriers. They will eventually all be bought out and this will diminish the amount of choices available for the consumer. Fewer choices means less competition and we all need the competition.

Microscope-wielding boffins crack Tube smartcard

Security researchers say they've found a way to crack the encryption used to protect a widely-used smartcard in a matter of minutes, making it possible for them to quickly and cheaply clone the cards that are used to secure office buildings and automate the collection of mass transportation fares.

The attack works against the Mifare Classic, a wireless card made by Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductors. It is used by transit operators in London, Boston and the Netherlands and by organizations in the public and private sectors to control access to sensitive areas, according to Karsten Nohl, a PhD candidate at the University of Virginia and one of the cryptographers who discovered the weakness. NXP says it's sold 1 billion to 2 billion of the cards.
