18.11.2008At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center
With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been
maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based
systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia
files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one
of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...

03.09.2008Microsoft to unveil Windows Home Server at CES
Microsoft is definitely going
to talk - at long last - about
its plans for Windows Home
Server (code-named
"Quattro") at the Consumer
Electronics Show in January,
according to
Mary Jo
Foley's ZDNet Blog.
Code-named
"Quattro", the new product
was originally to be "a
scaled back and customized
version of Windows Small
Business Server, running on
specialized hardware, and it
would simplify home networking
to the point where everyone
could enjoy the benefits of
modern network management,"
said blogger Rick Hallihan
back in 2005.
But
now the word on the street is
Windows Home Server won't be
Windows-Server-based at all.
Given the heavy Vista push
expected at CES, coupled with
Microsoft's undoubted plans
to put a damper on anything
Apple Computer might have to
say around home networking at
MacWorld Expo, Foley suggests
that "Quattro" will now be
Vista-based, not Windows
Server-based as initially
expected.
Home
media sharing is one area
where much is expected of
"Quattro". "As long as
there is some kind of
integration with (Windows)
Media Center," I don't care
what it's based on, said one
Windows tester. "I want it to
store all your media for your
home?. to be able to network
multiple Media Centers and PCs
and save all your stuff on one
back-end home server. That's
what I've been dreaming
about."

30.12.2006Microsoft Partners Eagerly Awaiting Windows Home Server
Microsoft's partners are

initial splash with tech-savvy
users.
Due to launch this fall,
Windows Home Server connects

manages, backs up and protects
digital audio, video and
photos.
In addition to centralized
storage and backup, Windows
Home Server also lets users

remotely, and is built on the
secure platform of Windows
Server 2003, says Joel Sider,
senior product manager in the
Windows Home Server group at
Microsoft.
Although Windows Home
Server is designed to be easy
to install and use, the
software fits well into the
toolbox of home integrators,
who can wrap it into a smart
home solution along with home
automation and networking
technologies, Sider noted...

04.08.2007Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore
Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an
individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed
up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server
keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the
amount of space that is used on your home server.

17.07.2009Windows Home Server System Builder Software Price Decrease
Windows Home Server Team: On November 1, Microsoft will introduce a 30% price reduction of the Windows Home Server software for the System Builder
channel. After a successful year in the market, Microsoft is reducing the price of the System Builder version of Windows Home Server to provide
additional value to the system builder community and further promote the home server category. Momentum for Windows Home Server remains strong.
During the first year, Windows Home Server has been embraced by System Builders in over 50 countries. The list of hardware partners continues to grow

for all of the great support over the last year, and we look forward to working with you all in continuing to grow the home server marketplace!

01.11.2008Windows Home Server Vail to get more entertainment hooks
Mary Jo Foley: While Microsoft has shared
some details (and code) for its upcoming minor update
to Windows Home Server, it has said next to nothing about the next major version.
(Like the rest of the Windows client and
server teams, the
Home Server team is alternating between “major” and
“minor” releases with its rollouts.)
I’ve tracked down (thanks to sources) a couple of new bits, however.
The next major version of Windows Home Server is codenamed “Vail,” I hear.
And Vail is going to include more
entertainment “capabilities.” What that means, precisely, I don’t know. Does it mean Windows Home Server will somehow become one
with Windows Media Center? Again, not sure. Last year, in response to a question about
Microsoft’s plans to integrate (or continue to keep separate) Windows Home Server and Windows
Media Center, Todd Headrick, WHS Product Planner said...

25.02.2008Windows Home Server Now Generally Available
Windows Home Server, a new solution to help families easily protect,
connect and share their digital media and documents, is generally available today. The
HP MediaSmart Server, powered by Windows Home Server software, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, Best Buy.com,
Buy.com, Circuit City.com and CompUSA.com. It will be shipped to customers and available via other leading retailer Web sites later in November.
Additional Microsoft hardware and software partners are also delivering new consumer products and solutions designed to work with Windows Home
Server.
Digital devices and content are everywhere in our day-to-day lives and they are more important all the time, said Bill
Gates, chairman of Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Home Server, Microsoft and its partners are creating a new consumer product category that
will help people keep their digital media safe and make it easier for them to enjoy it with friends and family.
Windows Home
Server is a stay-at-home server that delivers the benefits of powerful server technology used by many people at work within a simple, easy-to-use
solution for the home. It automatically backs up Windows XP-based and Windows Vista-based home computers each night, provides a central place to
organize digital documents and media, and includes a free Windows Live Internet address to access the home server from virtually anywhere and share
content with friends and family. It also monitors the health and security status of home computers and can stream media to other devices in the home,
such as Xbox 360, allowing people to enjoy digital music, photos and videos on their television.

05.11.2007Paul Thurrott: Serious Windows Home Server concerns
As is the case with my problems with the Xbox 360's Fall 2007 Dashboard Update, where I am having many issues that no one else seems to be having,
I'm sort of hoping that what I'm seeing on Windows Home Server (WHS) lately is just me. But I'm concerned enough about these issues to at
least just throw them out there and see what happens. Here's what's up. First, I've literally just completed my switch-over to WHS and
have taken down my previous Windows Server 2003-based server. I'm using HP's Media Smart Server and have added two 512 GB drives for a total
of 2 TB of storage. I really only need 1 TB but I do use WHS's data duplication functionality extensively, so what the heck. Plus it's backing
up several PCs regularly. The point of all this is that I'm really using this thing. It's not a best test or an experiment. My data is all on
this server.

23.12.2007Microsoft Warns Home Server Users Not to Write to Server or Use Media Managers
Acknowledging the "data
corruption bug" that's been ravaging Windows Home Servers since Christmas, Microsoft today
warned users NOT to:
"Use applications to directly edit or change files stored on Windows Home
Server"
"Use media management programs, such as Windows Media Player, to import files to the Windows Home Server"
"Redirect applications to access files stored in the shared folders"
Instead, users are instructed to move files to and from the server only by
hand, using Windows Explorer or a command line tool. Promise of a fix was cautiously optimistic, but not exactly speedy:
The issue
can now be reliably reproduced and a fix is in development. Once the patch has passed internal quality bars, external participants will be asked to
help test the fix. Our current plan is to release beta test versions of a fix over the next few months, with a final version currently estimated for
June 2008.
