Microsoft offers free software to Louisiana SMBs

Microsoft is working with state officials in Louisiana to offer Windows and Office software free for a year to small businesses still feeling the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Microsoft on Monday unveiled a new program, called the Software License Relief Program, in conjunction with the 2007 Hope & Recovery Summit, which is commemorating the second anniversary of both storms. Microsoft is working with the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) to offer the program, which will launch next month and gives eligible small businesses access to software from Microsoft, including Windows and Office, free of charge for a year.

The program doesn't come without a catch, however -- there are eligibility requirements for businesses, one of which is to purchase a three-year Microsoft Open Value License that spreads out software license payments over three years. Open Value bundles core software offerings from Microsoft into one license. After purchasing the software, businesses can bring the first year's invoice to any LSBDC, and Microsoft will pay the bill. The businesses themselves are responsible for the last two years of the license.

The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is probably not in the way you think. The license for all versions of Office 2007 except Home and Student edition are very clear. (To view your license, open any Ribbon-based Office program, click the Office button, click Word Options, select the Resources tab, and click About . For Outlook, click Help, About Microsoft Outlook. Review roundup: Moving into a new office suite

Whether you're using a Macintosh or a Windows computer, Microsoft Office is a staple throughout the world. While that doesn't mean everybody uses it, it does mean that almost everybody has to find something that works with it. And yet there are several reasons you might not want to get a copy of Microsoft Office itself.

One of those is the price. Few of us can happily afford to shell out $400 for the Standard edition of Office. Even the educational price of $150 is pricey, especially if you're a student trying to make ends meet.

Perhaps your PC doesn't have enough resources to handle Office, which is a notorious memory hog. Or maybe you have a second computer that you or other family members use only occasionally for document creation, and you don't want to shell out for another Office license.

Whatever the reason, it's good to know there are alternatives out there -- all cheaper than Microsoft's standard, and a couple that are even free. We sorted through nine contenders, some for Mac and some for PC (and a couple for both), to find out the best non-Office office suites available.

Dell Software Promo Rankles Microsoft Partners

Dell is quietly selling Microsoft Open License software at cost as part of a three-week promotion that runs until the end of July, CMP Channel has learned.

In an email viewed by CMP Channel, Dell approaches customers directly and extends the offer to products such as SQL, Exchange, Office 2007, Windows Vista, Windows Server Standard, Small Business Server, Client Access Licenses, Project, and SharePoint.

However, Microsoft isn't aware of any Dell promotions that offer Open License software at cost, according to a company spokesperson.

Dell did not return emails and phone calls seeking comment.

Customers typically buy licenses for Microsoft software through a volume license agreement, which can be an Open License, Select Agreement, or Enterprise Agreement. While partners can buy Open License agreements from distributors and sell them to customers, customers can only buy Select and Enterprise Agreements only directly from Microsoft's large account resellers (LARs), one of which is Dell. ..

Microsoft: Streaming Office 'infringes license'

Microsoft has said that the Internet service provider Fasthosts, which has started offering a hosted version of Microsoft Office 2007, is infringing on the software giant's license regulations.

Earlier this week, the U.K.-based ISP and hosting company started selling an online version of Microsoft Office, advertised as being "streamed to your PC." However, unlike most hosted software, or software as a service (SaaS), it requires users to download software to their client PC.

"Fasthosts' Microsoft Office product uses the SaaS model in that it is delivered and managed via the Internet," explained Mark Jeffries, Fasthosts' chief technology officer, on Thursday. Speaking with CNET News.com sister site ZDNet UK via e-mail, Jeffries said that a "full version Microsoft Office, identical to the boxed product, is downloaded using a streaming service and saved locally on a user's PC."

Influential OSI member attacks Microsoft over OOXML fiasco

Microsoft has been severely criticised by an influential member of the Open Source Initiative over the way it has pursued ISO certification for the Office Open XML specification.

Eric S Raymond, a founding member of the Open Source Initiative (OSI), labelled Microsoft's behaviour in pushing Office Open XML (OOXML) for fast track ISO certification as "egregious", and said that he was almost ready to recommend that Microsoft not receive approval from the OSI for the Microsoft Permissive License.

The OSI are the "stewards of the Open Source Definition (OSD)", and review and approve licences as OSD compliant. Microsoft on 10 August submitted the Microsoft Permissive License for OSI approval. The OSD is the most widely accepted set of criteria in the IT industry for classifying software as open source...

OSI email group gets catty over Microsoft's Permissive License request

The OSI License-Discuss mailing list has been ablaze for the past few days since Microsoft submitted its Permissive License (MS-PL) to the OSI for official open source license approval. Jon Rosenberg, source program director for Microsoft, posted, "Microsoft believes that this license provides unique value to the open source community by delivering simplicity, brevity, and permissive terms combined with intellectual property protection."

Rosenberg compared the MS-PL to the new BSD license and the Apache 2.0 license. "However, the new BSD license does not contain an explicit patent grant," he wrote. "In addition, we sought to create a license that is simple, short, and easy to understand."

Code licensed under the MS-PL cannot be redistributed under the terms of any other license, but it can be combined with works released under the terms of other licenses, as long as those other licenses permit it.

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:

First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.

Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

    D:office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:C:O2007TempUpdates

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.

That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 leaks

Microsoft is currently working on SP2 for Office 2007 and could be ready to release a final version as early as Q1 2009. Today an early copy has leaked to BitTorrent according to Windows Vista Magazine. The file weighs in at 287.14 MB and is named office2007sp2-kb953195-fullfile-en-us.exe. It's not clear whether the leaked copy is a beta, RC or final version of SP2 but the EULA states "012.0_B2TR_PRE.0_BTA_EN" meaning it it's likely to be a test version. The build number is 12.0.6416.1000, compared to Microsoft Office 2007 SP1 which has the build version of 12.0.6331.5000. SP2 will support Open Document Format (ODF), XML Paper Specification (XPS) and Portable Document Format (PDF).
