Microsoft backs down on MSN Search remake comment
Microsoft is backing away from a senior executive's comments earlier this week hyping the company's search engine remake.
Neil Holloway, Microsoft's president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said Wednesday that "in six months' time we'll be more relevant in the U.S. marketplace than Google" The remarks, made at a conference sponsored by Reuters, stunned the search industry.

6.2.2009Hitachi GST announces first 7,200RPM 2TB hard drive
Its fun to think that ten years ago the biggest hard drive available was 73 gigabytes. However with the constant and near unstoppable push to solid
state drives, hard disk manufacturers must continue to press on. Fast forward to today and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies becomes just the first
vendor to announce a 2TB 7,200RPM desktop hard drive. Hitachi is not the first hard drive manufacturer to reach 2TB, Western Digital did that earlier
this year, but the first 2TB drives were limited to a read/write of 5,400RPM. Seagate hit 5,900 RPM earlier this year as well, but again these new
drives will have a distinct speed advantage.

provide users with a 2TB hard disk drive. Image Courtesy: Engadget So far, Seagate's Barracuda 7200.12 packs 500GB per platter, and has the
highest areal density of 329 Gigabits per square inch. Western Digital might have reached this areal density with the release of its 2TB hard drive.
Further product specifications are not known yet.

27.01.2009Review: HP StorageWorks X510 2TB Data Vault
The HP StorageWorks X510 2TB Data Vault is a simple device with a lot to offer. What is the HP StorageWorks X510 2TB Data Vault you say? It's a
home server that offers up to 5TB of storage, up to 10 PC clients (unlimited Mac) and endless streaming, storage, and access options. When I took the
conference call to get the background information on the product, they made one thing clear. They reiterated that this product was designed for
either the high end home user with a lot of PCs or the small business user and it was supposed to be as easy, if not easier to setup than a new PC.
In a simple phrase, they nailed it.

17.11.2009Seagate release their first 2TB SATA 3.0 hard disk
Seagate have introduced their first hard drive which supports the new SATA 3.0 specification. The Barracuda XT is the Seagate's first drive to use
the new interface, which has a theoretical bandwidth of 6GB/s - double that of the SATA 2.0 (3GB/s) specification. The drive offers 2TB of storage
space, using four platters, according to Seagate (via Techspot). The 7200RPM drive has a sustained data rate of 138MB/s – the fastest speed
achieved by a 7200RPM drive, Seagate claims. The 64MB cache provides "screaming burst rate speeds and improve
overall performance," according to
their website.

Western Digital's 2TB Caviar Green hard drive
Late last week Western Digital briefed us on their forthcoming release of a new addition to their Caviar Green family of hard drives.
No
we're not talking some sort of exotic sushi or cracker-bound fish egg here either but rather a new, rather humongous and environmentally more
friendly hard drive from WD, that can be considered an "industry first". Today marks the day that standard rotational media breaks the 2TB barrier.
Let's spell that out a bit more clearly again here; T-W-O full Terabytes of SATA-based storage on a single, standard 3.5" hard drive.
Those of you on the consumer side of the market, hording gigs of music, movies, pictures and other media just got a bunch more breathing room to play
with. And those of you in the enterprise space now have a new option to consider with respect to bulk, low-cost, power-efficient storage. Perhaps
that rack just got a little smaller or the need to cool it a little less? well anyway the 2TB Monster is available from a starting price of $299.

Sony, SanDisk plan to make 2TB Memory Sticks
SDXC format is just not good enough. So, Sony and SanDisk have just announced that they plan to offer a new format for their jointly built memory
stick. The format is tentatively dubbed "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity".
This new format can reach 2TB and neither
company has released much more information than that.
In addition to the 2TB memory card format announcement; they are working on a new
Memory Stick HG Micro format, which promises to boast a blazing 60MB/s maximum data transfer speed.
There has been no indication of a
release date for either announcement. The companies are only saying that format licensing for both new formats is "scheduled to start in 2009".

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista
If your computer is acting unpredictably, locking up, and encountering blue screens of death, then youre most likely the victim of a faulty driver.
The Driver Verifier Manager (DFV) is a great tool for troubleshooting driver problems by identifying the troubling driver. Although DFV does not
actually fix the driver, it still is a really useful tool because it helps you identify the troubling driver so you can choose to delete or update the
driver.
Before you attempt to use this tool, please be sure that your are really having driver problems. The tool will prevent
your computer from starting by identifying the troubling driver. I say this only because it may be a lengthy process for you but if you are
having troubles, it will definitely be worth it.

Seagate plans SSD, 2TB hard drive for next year
Seagate will introduce its first SSD (solid-state drive) storage and 2TB hard drive next year, company CEO Bill Watkins said.
The company's first SSD product will be targeted at enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium for the expensive
drives. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers as the high prices could deter them for the next few years, Watkins said in an
interview.
The release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive were not available. Seagate released 1TB hard drives,
the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, in the middle of 2007.

Boot Record Rootkit Threatens Vista, XP, NT
In 2005 Derek Soeder and Ryan Permeh, researchers from eEye Digital Security, presented eEye BootRoot. The technique used in their project wasn't new
and had been popular in DOS times, but they first successfully used it in Windows NT Environment. The eEye Digital Security researchers skipped one
part - BootRoot didn't hide the real content of affected sectors like old DOS Stealth MBR viruses, but it had only been
created to show the possible way to compromise Windows NT OS.
Unfortunately, all the Windows NT family (including VISTA) still
have the same security flaw - MBR can be modified from usermode. Nevertheless, MS blocked write-access to disk sectors from userland code on VISTA
after the pagefile attack, however, the first sectors
of disk are still unprotected!

Windows Server 2008: Printer-Driver Packages
Day Twelve. We're almost halfway through our series. Today we'll continue on with our Printing theme - specifically, Printer-driver packages.
We'll also provide some background on the driver store feature of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
Printer-driver packages
are digitally signed printer drivers that install all of the components of the driver to the driver store on computers running Windows Vista or
Windows Server 2008. Using printer-driver packages on a print server that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 enables users who are not
members of the local Administrators group to connect to the print server and install (or receive) updated printer drivers. Before we go too much
further, let's go over the concept of the driver store.

18.03.2009ATI: Linux vs. Windows Vista
The results may surprise you...
Since AMD introduced their
new Linux display driver last month, we have published a number of different articles looking at the Radeon performance across
their different GPU product generations. This ATI/AMD Linux driver testing and exploration continued this month with the release of the
8.42 driver, which finally introduced AIGLX support for the fglrx driver. One
area though we haven't yet analyzed is how their official Linux driver now compares to their much-optimized Windows Catalyst driver. Today, however,
we will be looking just at that as we compare the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB performance under Linux and Microsoft Windows Vista.
