Despite the long wait between
Windows XP and Vista, the
latest operating system still
lacks maturity, "Stability is
certainly a problem," he
said.
Users are
voting with their feet, Lanci
said, so that the Vista launch
has had the smallest impact on
PC sales of any version of
Windows in the history of PC
manufacturing. He added the
situation didn't look likely
to change in the next six
months. Many business
customers have specifically
asked for Windows XP to be
installed on their new
machines, Lanci noted. While
industry pundits have detailed
user problems with Vista over
the past few months, including
sluggishness, the expense of
acquiring hardware powerful
enough to run the OS and lack
of support for many critical
applications, PC makers have
so far looked on the brighter
side. HP, Dell, Lenovo and
Toshiba have continued
offering XP-equipped machines,
but these are generally aimed
at consumers or small
businesses, not large
corporate clients.

Microsoft's latest efforts to persuade customers to upgrade to its much-maligned Vista operating system have met with a cool response from users.
Historically, Microsoft's first service pack for one of its marquee products – such as Windows – provides the impetus for users to
upgrade. As Gartner analyst, Stephen Kleynhans recently noted, customers see SP1 as the sign that the OS has reached maturity and is ready for
enteprise deployment.
But even the offer of free support for using installing Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and tools to lower implementation
cost, the user response has been one of stony indifference. Vista SP1 includes a number of fixes for bugs that have plagued the operating system, as
well as improved support for drivers. It initially became available to download from Microsoft's website and will be included as part of the
Window's Update feature from mid-April.

noticed that after installing Windows Vista SP1 on Windows Vista Ultimate - the Language Packs fail to appear on Windows Update (
KB947875).
We will be releasing Windows Vista SP1 in two
"waves". The first wave will only provide Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista Ultimate PCs running the following 5 Languages: English, French,
German, Japanese and Spanish. The second wave will follow shortly after - supporting all 36 languages.
