Those who paid attention to Apple's recent press event may have noticed something a bit dodgy about the world map portraying the availability of the iPhone 3G. The company announced the availability of the iPhone 3G in 80 countries now, but apparently some of those who don't have it didn't show up on the world map. The news comes from The Inquirer, or specifically, a reader of the website named Baldvin Mar Smárason. He said, "Apple removed two countries from the world map in iPhone 3.0 promo.

MapCruncher Beta for Microsoft Virtual Earth

MapCruncher Beta for Microsoft Virtual Earth makes it easy to publish maps overlaid in an application using the Virtual Earth map control. Once you are familiar with the tool, it will take you about ten minutes to generate a new tile layer.

Just find 5 to 10 corresponding landmarks on your map and on the Virtual Earth map view, and MapCruncher will register your map to the global coordinate system, warp it to fit a Mercator projection, and generate a set of image tiles that can be seamlessly layered on top of Virtual Earth map control's standard road, hybrid, or aerial imagery. It even makes a sample HTML page for reference.

MapCruncher accepts a variety of vector formats (PDF, WMF, EMF) and raster formats (JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, BMP).

Windows Embedded road map may bypass Vista

The planned successor to the embedded version of Windows XP, due from Microsoft Corp. two years from now, may bypass Windows Vista and instead be based on the oft-maligned operating system's own successor, which is codenamed Windows 7.

Microsoft had indicated last fall that the replacement for Windows XP Embedded would use Vista as its core operating system. But in an interview last week, Ilya Bukshteyn, director of marketing for the Windows Embedded product line, said there is a good chance that the next embedded OS codenamed Quebec will instead be engineered around Windows 7.

"To date, we are certainly working with Vista," Bukshteyn said. But, he added, "if there is an opportunity to get newer technologies in faster, and the customers want it, we may skip Vista."

FedEx Integrates Virtual Earth

Federal Express has launched their new drop box locater service using Virtual Earth. Search for the nearest drop boxes and you'll get a resulting list of locations. Near the top of the result list is a "View Area Map" link which opens up a div containing a Virtual Earth map plotting each of the drop box locations and a legend. You can also check or uncheck different types of results such as "FedEx Staffed," "Self-Service," and "FedEx Authorized Ship Center." You can then update the results for the list and the map. Each location on the map contains a popup with the location name and address.

From the list of results you can also link off to a page with a map and driving directions. Pretty nice looking locator. I'll be expecting more robust functionality such as finding locations along a route or drag and refresh maps; and/or, detailed information in the popups such as hours of operation and a click to call phone number. All in time, I suppose.

Google Product Connections Map

French Google blog Zorgloob offers a giant, and now clickable, map of Google products.

You can see popular services like Google News or more exotic ones like Google Music Trends, as well the different connections between these services. Each product is linked to a (French) description page which includes a rating, related products, and the URL of the site.

If the map's too big for you (and big it is... I wonder if Google has something similar internally?), you can also switch to the iconified list view. At the left navigation bar, youll also get a random Google service with every page load.

Wikipedia / Virtual Earth Mashup

Sarah Perez: Now this is a cool mashup and its built right into Virtual Earth! In Wikipedia, you may have noticed that some articles have coordinates in the upper-right hand side of the page that locate that place on a map. (See this example). Clicking on the coordinates from the Wikipedia entry will take you to you a map. But if you want to go the other way - from a map to Wikipedia - then you've got to check out what the Virtual Earth team has done. They've been indexing all these links in their Spatial Search and Explore indexes so you can surf the maps with Wikipedia displaying in the sidebar. If you want to try it out for yourself, turn on Live Map's Explore feature and then select the Wikipedia Tag, or just click this link to see it in action now.

Electricity grid in the US infiltrated by spies

If you love your gadgets and most of us do then this is a scary development for every owner of a device that requires a power source. According to the Wall Street Journal the Electicity Grid in the United States has been penetrated by Chinese and Russian spies. The spies left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials. "The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid," said a senior intelligence official. "So have the Russians." Both the Russian and Chinese governments have denied any wrongdoing but US investigators have followed electronic trails of stolen data to China and Russia.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 Fall Content Preview

The latest Free Booster Pack for Tripwire Interactive's RO Ostfront contains a number of new features included a new map and two new vehicles. Tripwire previously hinted that the new map would be a remake of from the original mod and we can now reveal that map is Danzig. This was justifiably a huge favorite in the mod days, providing intense, close-quarters infantry combat in the battered city of Danzig at the end of the war. Not just a straight port, Danzig has been rebuilt from the ground up with improved gameplay and greatly enhanced visuals. Take a look at the pictures: this will be the most graphically detailed map to date!

The first new vehicle is the Panzer IV H - a vehicle much requested by the community. This gives the Germans the most effective version of their medium tank for the war. Upgunned and uparmored, this Panzer IV is better equipped to slug it out with the T-34s it will meet on the battlefield. It also comes equipped with schürzen - additional side armor plates to deflect panzerfaust and anti-tank rifle rounds.

AT&T to Verizon, "there's a lawsuit for that"

AT&T is now suing Verizon Wireless over their recent commercial about their "spotty" 3G coverage. The commercial takes a jab at AT&T and Apple's iPhone in the commercial, changing the popular iPhone catch phrase, "there's an app for that" to "there's a map for that", pointing out AT&T's 3G coverage. AT&T's lawsuit against Verizon Wireless claims the latest advertising campaign falsely suggests AT&T customers have coverage gaps. AT&T thinks that Verizon is trying to fool consumers into thinking they can not use their mobile phone outside of AT&T's 3G coverage area, while the map does not show AT&T's massive 2G coverage.

Google mashes up Books and Maps

Google Inc. has started integrating its popular mapping service with its controversial books search engine. When searching for a specific novel, users can now use a section called "Places mentioned in this book" that offers a map from Google Maps with pins indicating places included in the text. Below the map is a list with the name of the places, linked to the pages in which they are mentioned, and an excerpt from the text.

" When our automatic techniques determine that there are a good number of quality locations from a book to show you, you'll find a map on the 'About this book' page. We hope this feature helps you plan your next trip, research an area for academic purposes or visualize the haunts of your favorite fictional characters ," wrote David Petrou, a Google software engineer, in the official Book Search blog.
