Could a three-core CPU be coming your way?

Tom's Hardware Guide ran one of the most unusual benchmarks I've ever seen, having taken a dual-CPU system and put two different CPUs in it. Now, anyone who knows anything about dual-CPU systems knows this is a no-no. Most motherboard makers don't even recommend mismatching steppings, let alone anything else. And sure enough, Tom's Hardware Guide had its fair share of trouble getting the system to work in such an odd configuration, but it got the system to work.

Multi-Core Confrontation: Core 2 Quad Q6600 vs. Core 2 Duo E6850

While AMD keeps postponing the launch of their quad-core processors to the end of this year “ beginning of next, Intel Company is offering very affordable quad-core CPUs from Core 2 Quad family. However, can Core 2 Quad processors be regarded as a worthy alternative to popular dual-core solutions?

The Intel processor price cut that occurred a month ago turned into an important milestone on the multi-core processors way to user computer systems. The price of quad-core processors has finally dropped down to the level of dual-core solutions. To be more exact, the youngest model in the official Core 2 Quad lineup is priced exactly the same as the top Core 2 Duo CPU. This price, by the way, is set at $266, which seems quite sufficient to make processors with four computational cores much more popular than they used to be before.

Triple-core and quad-core processors show up in sub-$600 PCs

The competition between AMD and Intel may appear to have calmed down a bit over recent months, but the retail market shows every sign that a new battle has begun: Following the dual-core fight, it now appears that triple-cores in fact are increasing the pressure on dual-core PCs and quad-core PCs have officially arrived in the mainstream.

For about half a year it seemed like entry-level quad-core PCs were stuck in the $800 to $1000 range, with Intels Core 2 Quad Q6600 controlling supply and demand. But suddenly we are seeing a whole new dynamic in this market. Large retail chains are selling what we would consider cheap multi-core processor systems that are competing with some aging dual-core systems still in inventory and are pushing more up-to-date dual-core PCs below $500 and even into the sub-$300 segment.

IBM's 4.0GHz, eight-core Power7 to fuel 10 petaflop beast

IBM looks set to join the seriously multi-core set with the Power7 chip. Internal documents seen by The Register show Power7 with eight cores per processor and also some very, very large IBM boxes based on the chip.

The IBM documents have the eight-core Power7 being arranged in dual-chip modules. So, that's 16-cores per module. As IBM tells it, each core will show 32 gigaflops of performance, bringing each chip to 256 gigaflops. Just on the gigaflop basis, that makes Power7 twice as fast per core as today's dual-core Power6 chips, although the actual clock rate on the Power7 chips should be well below the 5.0GHz Power6 speed demon.

Demand for Quad-Core Processors Accelerating “ Intel

After a relatively slow start quad-core processors are beginning to rapidly gain popularity among various customers. Paul Otellini, chief executive of Intel Corp. said during a conference with financial analysts on Tuesday that shipments of chips with four processing engines topped three million units last quarter.

śWe launched our first quad-core processor in November of last year, and by the second quarter had shipped our first million units. With demand for our quad-core products accelerating, we shipped over 2 million units in the third quarter alone. We now offer over 20 unique quad-core processor designs,ť said Mr. Otellini during the conference call with financial analysts.

Growing demand towards quad-core microprocessor is a result of relatively moderate pricing on them, which begins at $266 for Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 as well as availability of software that takes advantage of multi-core chips.

AMD launches dual-core MP Opterons; Intel responds with low-voltage Xeons

Sunnyvale (CA) - Having won one market victory with the first introduction of multicore processors for multi-processor platforms -- and not wanting anyone to forget it too soon -- AMD announced this morning the release of its fourth series of three new Opteron series processors, topped by the Dual-core Model 880 and followed up by the Dual-core Model 280, both of which will be available immediately.
< br>The Opteron 880 is geared toward four- to eight-way (4P - 8P) servers and 4P workstations, while the 280 addresses the 2P server market, and the new Dual-core Model 180 -- available in late October -- is geared toward single-processor servers. In 1000-unit quantities, the 880 will sell for $2649, with the 280 selling for $1299 and the 180 for $799.

As John Williams, AMD's director for server product planning, told Tom's Hardware Guide, the company's new dual-core price strategy is to equalize entry-level dual-core prices with top-tier single-core. With the entry of three new models, prices of existing dual-core product lines have been reduced to single-core levels. For example, AMD's top-of-the-line two-way single-core Models 252 and 254 are priced equivalently with the reduced prices of its two-way dual-core Models 265 and 270: $690 and $851, respectively. "In the customer's mind," said Williams, "that's a no-brainer... Over time, the migration to dual-core is the logical path." ..

Intel announces "Core 2 Duo on steroids"

Even though Intel is probably the industry's biggest proponent of multi-core computing and threaded programming, it today announced a single thread acceleration technology at IDF Beijing. Mobility chief Mooly Eden revealed a type of single-core overclocking built in to its upcoming Santa Rosa platform. It seems like a tacit admission from Intel that multi-threaded apps haven't caught up with the availability of multi-core CPUs.

Intel also foreshadowed a major announcement tomorrow around Universal Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) -- the replacement for BIOS that has so far only been used in Intel Macs. "We have been working with Microsoft," Intel hinted.

Hypervisors in Embedded Systems

Mike Glass: I attended Embedded World in Nurnberg last week. The number one application I saw over and over again was embedded devices based on multi-core processors. If you think of Microsofts entire range of embedded operating systems “ Micro-framework at the low end, Windows CE (the only real-time OS (RTOS)), and Windows XP; I expect multi-core processors to target systems built for Windows XP Embedded (XPe) first. This is because the cost of a multi-core processor is higher than a single-core and at least for now more likely in systems that can absorb the roughly $55 cost of an XPe client. But the interesting twist is that the value of multiple cores is that you can run an RTOS in one or more cores and run XPe in other cores. XPe would be used to run Windows applications “ say some kind of Human Machine interface (HMI), where the RTOS would run a factory control application that requires a guarantee of a processors time slice at some frequency that only Windows CE could deliver (or RTOS competitors like WindRivers VxWorks or a custom Linux solution).

Intel Reportedly to Simplify Brand-Names

In the recent years the product portfolio of Intel Corp. extended tremendously as a result of platformization as well as transition to multi-core technologies, making it uneasy for customers to determine the product they need. But that is going to change, once the company performs global platform simplification process in the beginning of 2008.

It was already reported that the world's largest chipmaker will get rid of Intel Viiv and Intel vPro brand-names going forward, but apparently the changes will be much more substantial, according to reports from Japanese and Taiwanese web-sites. For instance, Intel Core 2 processors will lose their "Solo", "Duo" or "Quad" differentiators, but will be marketed under Intel Core 2 brand-names. Intel Pentium D and Intel Pentium Dual-Core chips, despite of the fact that they are based on different micro-architectures, will be sold under Intel Pentium label. Nevertheless, Intel Celeron, Intel Core Extreme and Intel Xeon trademarks will be retained.
