Another security hole found in IE
Secunia published an advisory on Tuesday stating that an error could be exploited to fake the address bar in a browser window. This tactic could be used in phishing scams that attempt to trick people into believing they are on a legitimate site, when in fact they are viewing a fraudulent Web page. Phishing is a prevalent type of online scam that seeks to pilfer personal information from unsuspecting Internet users. The scams typically combine spam e-mail with fraudulent Web sites that appear to come from a trusted source, such as a credit card company or a bank.

01.05.2009Malware evolving too fast for antivirus apps
If you think that the latest security suites afford complete protection against malware attacks, think again. Today's for-profit malware pushers use
dedicated test labs and other increasingly professional techniques to improve their chances of infecting your computer. And the techniques they employ
to outpace security software makers appear to be working.
Make no mistake -- a good security program can go a long way toward
keeping you in control of your system. But PC World's recent tests of security suites found that new malware easily evaded the applications. In our
tests of how well security software blocks unknown malicious programs, the best performer detected only one in four new malware samples. In contrast,
February 2007 results from similar heuristics testing showed that the best utilities caught about half of new samples.

Symantec warned of an attack which uses spam emails to spread a 'video' of Clinton.
A file named 'mpg.exe' downloads another Trojan application which infects the user's system. Researchers at McAfee noted a similar attack
which uses links hidden inside emails again promising a video of Clinton but redirecting to a page hosted on Google ads.

24.07.2008Researchers Say Automated IM
Worm Is Inevitable
The sudden appearance
of a rootkit file in a
spyware-laden IM worm attack
has set off new fears that
malicious hackers are
sophisticated enough to launch
a fully automated worm attack
against instant messaging
networks.
In the most recent attack
aimed at users of America
Online Inc.'s AIM network,
the "lockx.exe" rootkit file
was bundled with a new variant
of the W32/Sdbot Trojan to
create a nasty mix of hidden
malware.
This is
the first detection of SDBot
squirming through IM chat
windows, and the addition of a
rootkit program is causing
raised eyebrows among security
researchers and worm
watchers.
"The
situation is ripe for a fully
automated worm to cause some
serious damage," said Jose
Nazario, senior software
engineer at Arbor Networks
Inc., a network security firm
based in Lexington,
Mass.
Nazario, a
worm researcher and author who
tracks malicious activity on
the Worm Blog, said the
appearance of SDBot in an IM
attack highlights a rapidly
emerging trend for malware:
Bootstrap onto the system,
download a number of tools
including a rootkit and
spyware, use an IRC network to
control the botnet, and
continue propagating. ..

Security experts have called for Internet companies to do more to tackle the growing threat of "malvertising", the practice of placing fake adverts

advert, which claimed to have found a virus on the visitor's computer, before persuading them to go to a website to download the malware under the
guise of "anti-virus" software. According to the New York Times, the advertiser was thought to be a legitimate company and indeed displayed legit
adverts for a week, before externally changing it to a malware advert over the weekend.

30.05.2008Combating Malware with Collective Intelligence
Panda Security is arming customers with new software—Panda Security for Business Version 4.02SP1—that takes advantage of its
"Collective Intelligence" strategy. The Madrid-based company is bringing the Collective Intelligence approach to bear with integration
between the latest version of Panda Security for Business and Malware Radar, an on-demand service that provides an automated malware audit for
customers.
The Collective Intelligence approach pushes malware analysis and detection into the cloud by gathering information on the
latest malware threats via the Panda Collective Intelligence agent and uploading it to Panda servers. From there, it is processed and classified and
ultimately remediated with a signature made available to the entire Collective Intelligence community. The approach offers organizations the ability
to detect and protect against malware while at the same time minimizing the resource and bandwidth consumption of protected systems, company officials
said.
