30.10.2009Pushing the Limits of Windows: Physical Memory
Mark Russinovich: This is the first blog post in a series I'll write over the coming months called Pushing the Limits of Windows that describes how
Windows and applications use a particular resource, the licensing and implementation-derived limits of the resource, how to measure the resources
usage, and how to diagnose leaks.
To be able to manage your Windows systems effectively you need to understand how Windows
manages physical resources, such as CPUs and memory, as well as logical resources, such as virtual memory, handles, and window manager objects.
Knowing the limits of those resources and how to track their usage enables you to attribute resource usage to the applications that consume them,
effectively size a system for a particular workload, and identify applications that leak resources.

04.10.2005Microsoft Launches New Online Resource for Nonprofit Groups
Microsoft Corp. today announced the global availability of NGO Connection, a new online resource for thousands of nonprofit groups around the world.
Driven by feedback from nonprofit partners and years of experience working with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the online resource is designed
to assist NGOs to more efficiently use technology to achieve their goals as well as to encourage networking and coordination of NGO resources across
the world.
The primary goal of the new online resource is to provide a convenient and easy one-stop shop for technology

Connection endeavors to make it easier for NGOs to access the complete range of Microsoft resources and offerings, and help them effectively use other
online resources for nonprofit groups. NGO Connection also will be localized into Arabic, French, German, International English, Russian and Spanish
in the coming months, bringing the resources of NGO Connection to an even wider audience of NGOs.

31.10.2008WDDM Overhaul On The Way
Microsoft is to overhaul
Windows? graphic driver model
after realising that the
Windows Display Driver Model
(WDDM) 1.0 ? which will ship
with Vista ? needs improvement
in the way it shares GPU
resources between programs and
Windows itself.
Steve Pronovost of
Microsoft?s DirectX team
disclosed at WinHEC in Seattle
last week that although the
WDDM 1.0 introduces some
rudimentary task scheduling
for GPUs, a new generation of
GPU hardware and a major
architectural change to the
way Windows deals with video
cards will be required.
He said that the
trouble with WDDM 1.0 is that
once one program is using the
GPU, other programs are shut
out until the process
completes. In Vista, that can
cause less fluid rendering of
on-screen graphics, if
multiple programs are trying
to use GPU resources at
once.

02.06.2006Hollywood, Microsoft align on
new Windows
As Microsoft readies
the next version of its
Windows operating system,
called Vista, the software
giant is building in
unprecedented levels of
safeguards against video
piracy.
Fo
r the first time, the Windows
operating system will wall off
some audio and video processes
almost completely from users
and outside programmers, in
hopes of making them harder
for hackers to reach. The
company is establishing
digital security checks that
could even shut off a
computer's connections to
some monitors or televisions
if antipiracy procedures that
stop high-quality video
copying aren't in
place.
In short,
the company is bending over
backward--and investing
considerable technological
resources--to make sure
Hollywood studios are happy
with the next version of
Windows, which is expected to
ship on new PCs by late 2006.
Microsoft believes it has to

entertainment industry if the
PC is going to form the center
of new digital home networks,
which could allow such new
features as streaming

06.09.2005SDSC to make on-demand supercomputing available
The National Science
Foundation (NSF) will soon
begin allowing the San Diego
Supercomputing Center (SDSC)
to immediately allocate its
resources in the event of an
emergency. If, for example, an
earthquake or other disaster
takes place, these emergency
jobs will be kicked off right
away, providing researchers
(and the public) with a fast,
clear view of the event's
impact.
The SDSC is
part of a TeraGrid network, a
system of nine supercomputing
facilities across the the
United States. It communicates
via its own internal network
at 30 Gbps. TG Daily recently
toured the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications
(NCSA) in Urbana, Illinois,
which is also part of
TeraGrid. Follow
this
link to learn more about
the way supercomputing centers
operate.
Supercomputing facilities
have a regular order of
operations. Under normal
circumstances the resources of
any facility are planned out
well in advance. A batch of
jobs is maintained constantly
at the ready, often consisting
of more than 1,000 things in
queue waiting to be processed.
Centers like SDSC use some
very sophisticated scheduling
software to make sure their
supercomputers are kept as
busy as possible. The more
machines they can keep busy,
the more data they can process
each year...

15.08.2007Microsoft Virtualization Day: Helping IT professionals do more with less
Nick White: Today we're making a series of announcements outlining our company-wide strategy for virtualization from the desktop to the
datacenter.
<...> We have a vision that focuses on businesses employing our virtualization toolset to more simply and
cost-effectively manage their IT environments. We're calling that vision Dynamic IT. Dynamic IT is aiming to help IT professionals get more out of
their computing resources across both server and desktop environments. One of the benefits of this initiative is to enable IT managers to dynamically
make changes or add capacity to their deployments in a matter of minutes instead of hours (or even days). In a phrase, Dynamic IT is about
efficiently getting the necessary resources to users and computers at any given moment and with a minimum of hassle and effort. We expect this vision
to result in a whole new era of datacenter and desktop PC management, all hinging on virtualization technologies and Windows.
Central to the vision of Dynamic IT is the concept of the Optimized Desktop. The Optimized Desktop refers to virtualizing a user's applications
and profile together so that they follow that user, regardless of the location of the PC in use at the moment...

25.12.2006Is Microsoft a danger to the environment?
As many commentators have alluded to in numerous articles for the past two decades Microsoft and Intel have a very special relationship often referred
to as the Wintel alliance. The question is in a world concerned with climate change and global warming can the world afford to allow the Wintel
alliance to continue?
It is no secret that crux of Wintel is to drive the sale of ever increasing Intel-based processing power
using ever more feature rich and hardware resources demanding Microsoft software - primarily the Windows operating system. As a result, for the past
two decades and in particular since 1995, successive iterations of Microsoft Windows have become increasing complex, more feature rich and above all
more demanding of computing resources.
In addition, the advent of the Internet, while it seemingly scared the life out of
Microsoft, has actually been a boon for both the software company and Intel. Through necessity, the Internet has spawned a software security industry
that consumes additional computing resources for Intel and provides Microsoft with fuel to develop its next more secure release.

26.11.2007Windows HPC Server 2008 Beta1 Observations
Phil Pennington: HPC Pack Beta1 was recently announced at the Super-Computing convention in Reno (i.e. "SC'07"). Executing on release milestones
with hard dates, as with the convention date, is always a project management night-mare. The task illustrates the classic struggle between time,
resources, and features. Generally, features are sacrificed and resources are increased (i.e. the product team works overtime).
Such is the case with HPC Server 2008 beta1. Yes, there are missing features and certain features that present a nice "Easter Egg" type of
surprise for those willing to give the product a spin. Although, the beta generally accomplishes what beta's are supposed to accomplish. That is,
the user community is given a good idea of where the product is headed and the beta also give us an opportunity to provide feedback which will
ultimately positively influence the product.
With this perspective, it seems appropriate to keep a running-list of observations
that might help you get past some of the features that were first scattered amongst the resources and subsequently gathered into beta1...

04.03.2009Microsoft's mysterious Windows 7 communiqué
Yesterday, ZDNet.co.uk received a press release from Microsoft.
That's not uncommon. What is uncommon is to get one unconnected
with a product launch, an event or some major change in strategy. And this one... well, we're still not sure quite what it's about. It's titled
"Windows 7 Information", but of the 1,500 or so words in it, barely a couple of sentences would fully qualify as that.
So,
we've decided to publish the press release in its entirety, to let you make your own mind up about what Microsoft is trying to say and why. Our best
guess is beneath each paragraph in italics but, for the full effect, ignore those.
