09.12.2008Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?
Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the
change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the
color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:
A
method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method
includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying
the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to
apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value
and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be
application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

06.09.2008Patent reveals Aero Glass reflections was also to change according to time of day
Is there a possibility that
we may see this idea as a
future Ultimate Extra or as a
feature in Vista SP1? Only
time will tell...
Dont read this if you are
easily disappointed or are
already disappointed with
Windows Vista compared to
Longhorn, since it just adds
more fuel to the flame. A
patent application filed
yesterday (May 31) reveals a
little more about the other
ideas Microsoft had for Aero
Glass.
The key
characteristics of Aero Glass,
colorization and reflection,
are explained in two separate
patents,
"http://appft1.uspto.gov/neta
cgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect
2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetah

2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetah
tml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f

GNR.&OS=DN/20070124691&RS=DN/2
0070124691>Dynamic reflective
highlighting of a glass
appearance window frame." The
latter brings up an
interesting idea, it writes:
As described
above, a reflective highlight
of a glass appearance of an
application window frame may
be configured to change during
a move and/or resize operation
based on a set of rules that
describe a reflective
highlight images placement
relative to the current
position of the application
window within a desktop space.
Concurrently or alternatively,
a reflective highlight may be
configured to change in
response to a time of day
event.
If youre
not familiar with the
techno-babble-patent-language,
what it means is that the
reflection in Aero Glass (the
white stripes) was designed to
change based on the position
of the application window on
the desktop, on the time of
day, or both.

14.05.200910 Cool Things about Vista you may not have heard of
With the release of MacOS X Leopard, the comparisons between Vista and Leopard are out in force. Windows Vista had a rough start and has taken its
share of beatings on-line including here at Neowin.net.
But after 9 months of availability, Vista has shaped up nicely and SP1 looks to
massauge most of the remaining complaints with Microsofts new OS.
Moreover, it is often easy to forget just how big of a release Windows
Vista really was. While Leopard claims "300 new features" most of those features are minor in nature (Lets face it, MacOS X is so good that
its in the enviable position of only needing to evolve, Windows Vista, by contrast, had to play a lot of catch-up). Windows Vista has closer to
10,000 new features when one adds both major and minor updates to the mix.
WinCustomize has an article outlining 10 examples of minor
features that rarely get discussed and yet make a small but noticeable improvement to the Windows experience over Windows XP.

I have a confession to make, I used Windows Millennium Edition and I liked it. That doesn’t stop me making fun of it however.

What a
lot of people forget or don’t even recognize to begin with is that Windows Me is actually a rather innovative and forward-looking operating

kernel.

07.05.2009PINNED: WLM Build 566 Comming
Soon
Remember that little talk
about how the 562 build of
Windows Live Messenger was
just a preview; well here
comes the bride... I mean the
build. Build 566 of WLM is to
be released on February 28th
according to the WLM team
blog.
The
build will feature some
noticeable updates, mainly the
layout of the Contact List,
the tabs have now been
repositioned inside the main
window, the spacing between
each contact has been reduced
to allow more contacts to be
viewable in the window (= less
scrolling) and the avatar
preview and display
name/personal messages boxes
are finally back to the left
side again.
A
few of the minor updates
include the fact that the
menus are now only available
through the drop down menu,
meaning you can no longer
expand or minimize the window
frame like before. Also, the
ink/type tabs in the
conversation window have been
moved to the right side closer
to your display picture.
It has also been
announced that the WLM team is
working on new status icons
that both look good and show
the status at the same
time.

20.02.2009Yahoo sends letter to shareholders over Microsoft bid
Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang cited the growing online advertising market and his company's position to take advantage of that growth as reasons for
shareholders to reject Microsoft's acquisition bid, he said in a letter to shareholders Wednesday. The letter, the contents of which Yahoo made
public Wednesday, stated that Microsoft's February 1, $44.5 billion unsolicited takeover offer was too low. Yang said that Yahoo is the most
visited site in the United States, held the top position in online display advertising, and counted almost one out of two of the world's Internet
users as its members. He also said Yahoo is the top mobile destination in the U.S.
Yang did not cite sources for most of his claims.
However, comScore Networks research from November 2007 confirmed Yahoo's online display advertising leadership, with almost 19 percent of the
market. The online ad market is expected to grow from $45 billion last year to $75 billion in 2010, Yang said, and that Yahoo wanted "to take
advantage of what we see as a unique window of time in the growth -- and evolution -- of this market to build market share and to create value for
stockholders."

14.02.2008Mozilla admits Firefox is flawed just like IE
In a public mea culpa, Mozilla
Corp.'s chief security
officer acknowledged today
that Firefox includes the same
flaw that the company called a
"critical vulnerability" in
Internet Explorer during a
two-week ruckus over
responsibility for a Windows
zero-day bug.
"Over
the weekend, we learned about
a new scenario that identifies
ways that Firefox could also
be used as the entry point,"
said Window Snyder of Mozilla.
"While browsing with Firefox,
a specially crafted URL could
potentially be used to send
bad data to another
application.
"We
thought this was just a
problem with IE," Synder
continued. "It turns out, it
is a problem with Firefox as
well."
The argument
over responsibility for a flaw
that involved both IE and
Firefox began two weeks ago,
when Danish researcher Thor
Larholm argued that IE
contained an input validation
bug that lets it pass
potentially malicious URLs to
other applications. Larholm
called out Firefox's
"firefoxurl://" protocol as
one that IE mishandled. He
staked out the position that
IE was to blame, while other
security experts said it was
Firefox's fault...

Microsoft isn’t

Microsoft will be hiring 150 or so
Microsoft-trained “Windows gurus” to work in retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City to help explain how Windows, Windows Live

shoppers,’ where the focus is more on informing and supporting the customer than on the actual sale,” according to Microsoft.
