Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?

Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? The fact of the matter is that a lot of people from users, to developers, to workers, and to investors like Google. Heck, even I like google! (Look at the ads.)

Windows 7 On Track For 2010 Release

That's the year we'll make contact, and not before.

Chris Flores, the head of Microsoft Featured Communities confirmed to Neowin by stating "As most of you are well aware, there has been quite a bit of recent speculation about Win7. While I am not at liberty to discuss the details of Win7 (yet) I do want to set the record straight that we are still shooting for 2010 - 3 years from the launch of Vista."

Bearing in mind that 2010 is just a little under a year and a half away, it's unreasonable to think that something would be released in between; however we can speculate that SP2 for Windows Vista will come before then and may introduce some new features making the upgrade from XP worthwhile. Pure speculation of course!

Amazon, eBay, Apple worst on climate change list

Bad news for environmentally conscious people who want an iPhone: Apple is near the bottom of a new list that rates companies based on their efforts to stop climate change.

While it doesn't have quite the cache, Motorola would make a better choice of cell phone if you care about efforts the vendor is making to improve its carbon footprint, according to the Climate Counts list.

Motorola got a score of 60, compared to Apple's 2, meaning it has set goals to reduce its energy use and has already succeeded in doing so. The highest score a company can get is 100.

Climate Counts, a new nonprofit organization, plans to update the list every year and encourages consumers to base their buying decisions on companies' climate change efforts. ..

What to expect from Microsoft in 2008

Steve at Bink.nu asked me to post his "What to expect from Microsoft in 2008" list, so here goes!

The famous Bink.nu "expect list" is back! Just as previous years, I made a list of what releases we can expect from Microsoft. 2005 and 2006 turned out to be pretty accurate, the only things wrong weren't my mistakes but delays or change of plans. Last year I also started to make a list for 2007, because it is a lot of work I never managed to get it done and it never got published. To avoid that I publish what I have now and add stuff over the coming weeks, also based on your feedback!

If you think something is missing or wrong please let me know through a comment or sending an email to bink at bink nu. This list is based on facts, assumptions and wild guesses. Again it is not complete yet and will be updated by your feedback!

Triple-cool rating for Apple

Apple has taken a remarkable three places on a new list of the 20 coolest brands in the United Kingdom.

The Top 20 CoolBrands list was headed by Aston Martin, but Apple took second place with iPod, seventh with its main brand, and nineteenth with iTunes.

Other tech brands to make the list were YouTube (3), Bang & Olufson (4) Google (5), PlayStation (6), Nintendo (9), eBay (13) and Amazon (20).

An initial 'shortlist' of almost 1200 brands was presented to the 26 members of the independent and voluntary CoolBrands Council, predominantly marketers, designers and journalists. After council members had scored each brand, the top 625 were voted on by a 3265-member consumer panel...

Innovation is a key nowadays to making (and more importantly, selling) products, so making a top 50 list is certainly a grand achievement. Without further ado, here is the list. 1. Team Obama: Barack Obama made the top position because his team innovated in his quest to become the next President of the United States. He employed the power of technology, using Twitter and various other internet tools to connect with voters, doing what no other President has done fully before. 2. Google: Google continues to make it to innovation lists, and with little wonder.

Power isn't everything; Green500 offers new supercomputer list

The most energy-efficient supercomputer on the new Green500 List isn't the top machine on the biannual listing of the most powerful supercomputers in the world -- not by a long shot.

IBM's BlueGene/P system, which is running at the Daresbury Laboratory of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, came out on top of the first official ranking of the Green500. The Daresbury Laboratory is one of seven national research councils in the U.K. The supercomputer, though a major player on the new green list, is ranked a middling 121 on the latest Top500 List, which was released Nov. 11 at SCO7, a supercomputing conference in Reno, Nev.

The Green500 List ranks the machines that make the Top500 List by their energy efficiency. The Top500 List ranks the top supercomputers on the planet based on performance.

Microsoft gets an earful on what users want in future Windows releases

In December 2006, Microsoft requested feedback from a select group of invitees regarding what they would like to see fixed, changed and/or added to future Windows builds. The Windows team got an earful: Nearly 800 new feature requests, another 560-plus change requests and almost 400 defects.

That list has been winnowed down to about 70 of the most popular requests and posted the week of July 9 to Microsofts Connect beta site.

This isnt the official Windows Seven or Windows Eight feature list. But the list does indicate some of the features that testers are the most interested in seeing make it into the next Windows release or two.
