Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?

Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? The fact of the matter is that a lot of people from users, to developers, to workers, and to investors like Google. Heck, even I like google! (Look at the ads.)

Users, Web Developers Vent Over IE7's First Year

Users of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) turned a blog post by a Microsoft Corp. program manager into a complaint free-for-all that took the company to task for not following through on browser upgrade promises and alienating Web developers. In the posting to the IE team's blog, Tony Chor, a group program manager, used the passing of IE7's first year to tick off several milestones for the browser, including a claim that its user base recently reached 300 million. "This makes IE7 the second most popular browser after IE6," Chor said in the post. "IE 7 is already #1 in the U.S. and U.K., and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly."

Chor also said that IE7's integrated anti-phishing filter stops an estimated 900,000 phish attempts each week, and that the support call volume for Microsoft's browser line is down 20% from a year ago. "This is typically a sign that the product is more stable and has fewer issues than the previous release," Chor said.

The First Year of IE7

It’s been a little over a year since we released IE7 on Windows XP and for Windows Vista, so I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about where we are after the year.

According to internal Microsoft research based on data from Visual Sciences Corporation, there are over 300 million users are experiencing the web with IE7. This makes IE7 the second most popular browser after IE6. IE7 is already #1 in the US and UK, and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly.

Perhaps more important than the overall numbers is the positive impact IE7 has made for our users. As you know, we focused a lot on improving security in IE7. We believe IE 7 is the safest Microsoft browser released to date. According to a vulnerability report published today, IE7 has fewer vulnerabilities than previous versions of IE over the same time period. What’s more, the report showed that IE7 had both fewer fixed and unfixed vulnerabilities in the first year than the other browsers we compared.

Microsoft prepares IE7 Beta 3 for mid-August

The Hotfix is reporting a Microsoft source has quietly leaked that IE7 Beta 3 will be availible to the public sometime in mid-August of this year. This goes hand-in-hand with official MS reports that they are indeed working on Beta 3 at the moment.

One fix going in Beta 3 will be will be to revert back to an IE6 behavior when using PHP pages. One IE7 tester noted that "when it comes to compare the code in the session variable and the code in the post data, they're different." Eric Lawrence of Microsoft responded with "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue" on the subject.

In the past few weeks Microsoft has made a few references to IE7 Beta 3 on their IE Blogs about bug fixes and releases. IE7 Final is set for a Winter 2006 release.

WGA Removed From IE7 Update

From the Internet Explorer Team Blog: Almost a year ago, we released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP. Since then, IE7 is well on its way to becoming the most used browser in the world, and we've seen lots of evidence that IE7 makes it safer and easier to accomplish everyday tasks online. For example, the built-in Phishing Filter has protected consumers from known phishing web sites an average of 900,000 times per week. IE7 is the first - and still the only - browser with native support for Extended Validation SSL Certificates that help prevent online fraud. (Of course, tabbed browsing, QuickTabs, shrink-to-fit printing, an easily customizable search box, CSS improvements, and some add-ons are all good things too.)

Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users. With today's "Installation and Availability Update," Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users. If you are not already running IE7, you can get it now from the Internet Explorer home page on Microsoft.com, get a customized version from a third-party site, or, if you haven't already received it via Automatic Updates, this version will be delivered to you as we described previously. If you are already running IE7, you will not be offered IE7 again by Automatic Updates.

Additionally, we've made minor changes to IE7 for Windows XP based on customer feedback ->

Neowin Asks: Who can't upgrade to IE7?

As most Neowin visitors know by now, Windows Internet Explorer 7 was released this week. While there are probably a few of you who will not upgrade immediately because you use another browser (Firefox, Opera, etc) the question of the day is... are those, the people like you out there who cannot upgrade to IE7?

I can't, at least not at work. The private university I work for has multiple programs that simply will not function on systems with IE7 installed on them. As reflected in a letter sent our by my boss to our campus, "these vendors continue to work toward support, but it will likely be January or February of 2007 before that support becomes official."

While I in no way blame Microsoft for this -- these vendors, Cisco being among them, have had ample time to test the IE7 beta and RCs -- the fact of the matter is our organization cannot allow systems to be upgraded on our campus, even student machines (which require a school issued Cisco program to access our network, that program breaks with IE7.)

Are there programs that you or your company use that have forced you to stay at IE6? Please comment and share.

Internet Explorer 7 to see early 2006 public beta

Internet Explorer fans can look forward to a public beta of the upcoming version 7 of that popular browser sometime in the first quarter of 2006. That fact, revealed on the Microsoft Developer Network web site today, may herald a return of the browser wars.

IE7, an early beta of which is already in the hands of developers, is touted to contain such innovations as RSS, tabbed browsing, CSS compliance, and better security features. Astute readers will note that those features are already available in alternatives such as Firefox, Opera, and Apple's Safari. It is something of a technological tradition for a big company to, er, build on the innovations of smaller ones, and IE7 looks to follow that rule. However, all those browsers together can't touch Internet Explorer's estimated 80-90% market share, leaving Internet Explorer as the dog to beat. Microsoft is no doubt looking to make a statement to the encroaching upstarts that have been eyeing its territory. Statements aside, it looks like they just http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archi ve/2005/12/06/500599.aspx]want the kind of QA love only a public beta can give.

"We want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to try a pre-release version of IE7 and tell us how it works with their web sites, their applications, their add-ons, and how they use the web overall." ..
