Microsoft Moots 'Universal' MP3 Player Dock
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has established a working group to develop a universal docking standard for portable devices, the US-centric organisation announced this week. The move is being driven by Microsoft - at least, the software giant is the only company to be granted quotation space on the CEA press release, and there's a Microsoft staffer in the working group's chair. It's not hard to see why. Having failed to beat the iPod using proprietary technology - the Windows Media format - it's try to beat it using a sharper weapon: the open standard it defines.

I hate Macs
Unless you have been walking around with your eyes closed, and your head encased in a block of concrete, with a blindfold tied round it, in the dark - unless you have been doing that, you surely can't have failed to notice the current Apple Macintosh campaign starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which has taken over magazines, newspapers and the internet in a series of brutal coordinated attacks aimed at causing massive loss of resistance.

14.5.2008Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 1
Mac Dock and Windows Taskbar Overview The Dock in OS X Leopard is a bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of the screen, and employs a 3D
perspective. The Dock is a prominent feature of OS X. It is also a prominent feature of Mac OS X's predecessors NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating
systems. It is primarily a way to launch and switch between running applications. It not only provides easy access to applications, but allows the
user to organize them to their taste within the Dock. Any file or app can be attached to the Dock.

24.02.2009Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2
In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic
functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit
while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running
and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an
application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

Sarah Perez: I just installed the Dell Dock on my PC. You may remember hearing a while ago about how

23.09.2008Meridian iPod Dock Upscales Video to 1080p
Meridian Audio has launched the Meridian iRIS, a standard iPod dock with a novel twist: it upconverts standard iPod video to 1080p quality.
Meridian's iRIS Universal Dock for iPod will be available in November, at a manufacturer's suggest price of $379, the company announced
at CEDIA on Thursday.
It's somewhat hard to believe that a consumer, let alone a high-end consumer that Meridian caters to, is
going to be inclined to watch iPod-encoded video on an HDTV; as PC Magazine display guru Robert Heron put it: "there's only so much you can do" to
the source video. More to the point, a good display may also have some basic video-enhancing features, if not true upconversion.

07.09.2007Apple patents OS X Dock
Apple has patented the OS X Dock, nearly a decade after the operating system made its public debut with a new slant on the taskbar.
The late arrival isn't due to a lack of initiative, however. Apple applied for the patent December 20, 1999, and it was approved by the US Patent
Office only yesterday.

09.10.2008DSGi employees caught insulting customers on Facebook
According to articles by the BBC and PC Pro yesterday, employees from Dixons Store Group International (DSGi) reportedly labelled their customers
"stupid", amongst other things, in an unofficial Facebook group set up for DSGi staff. One of the posters apparently raised the question of whether
or not employees are allowed to "cattle prod" stupid customers, however, many of them posted under their real names, something that may prove costly
after DSGi has finished investigating the comments.

07.08.2006Giz Explains: Why the Windows 7 Taskbar Beats Mac OS X's Dock
Matt Buchanan: The Windows 7 taskbar is the most important Windows UI change since Windows 95, and it will dramatically change the way you use
Windows. And it's better than the Mac's Dock.
That's because the "superbar"as the taskbar is known by developersjerks
taskbar functionality in a new direction. It's no longer merely a window managerjust a place to manage open windows and by proxy, open applications.
It's now a bona fide application launcher. More than that, it blends the two in ways that will remind many of the OS X Dockapps that are running and
those that aren't can live together. True, you've been able to launch apps from the Windows taskbar's Quick Launch ghetto for ages, but that's
been demolished so that Microsoft could completely and seamlessly integrate the launching of new apps and the managing of running ones.

04.04.2007Review: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000
Looking for a new keyboard and mouse combo? Got a bit of spare cash? Look no further, this is the "Ultimate" keyboard and mouse combo set that
Microsoft has ever created. The Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 combines a mouse, keyboard and a new charging "dock". The dock allows you to
charge both the mouse and keyboard...wirelessly. You simply slip the keyboard under the charging port and it's charging, stick the mouse on top
and that's charging too. It was this sole reason I was interested in this combo combined with the fact it has a backlit keyboard. Lets take a
look at all its features.

17.04.2008Eisner's advice to striking writers: Blame Steve Jobs, not the studios
In his keynote speech on Wednesday morning at the Media and Money conference hosted by Dow Jones and Nielsen, former Disney CEO
Michael Eisner talked about
writers as though they were a minority group that he didn't particularly understand well. "I like writers. Some of my best friends are writers," he
said as though attempting to save face. But nevertheless, his foremost epithet for the
ongoing Writer's Guild of America strike was "stupid."
"I see stupid strikes, and I see less stupid
strikes. I see smart strikes," Eisner said in the keynote, which was structured as a conversation with Neil P. Cavuto, senior vice president and
managing editor of Fox Business News. "This is a stupid strike."
The problem, Eisner said, is that the Writer's Guild is
lobbying for a bigger cut of the profits from digital distribution--and according to the former Disney chief, those profits simply aren't there.
Eisner, now the head of a private investment firm called The Tornante Company, has
launched an online video studio
called
Vuguru, and said that it's still more or less a fruitless labor. Vuguru's debut
series, a serial mystery called Prom Queen, "didn't make money," he said.
