In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.
. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

Throughout 2007, according to reports by Net Applications, Mac OS increased its market share by 3.15% while Vista managed to grab 10.48% market share.
Windows XP lost 8.39% of the OS market share in the same time period, quite unsurprising considering Vista is its successor, while Linux increased by
0.26%. Nothing too mind-boggling, but definitely interesting, to say the least. At the end of December 2007, the (incomplete) standings are as
follows:
Windows XP - 76.91%
Windows Vista - 10.48%
Mac OS - 7.30%

Mac OS X Leopard will be

feature that is definitely
not-so-tiny is something I'll
dub 'fast switching' between
Mac OS X and your Boot Camp
Windows installation.
While this isn't quite
the built-in virtualization
that some users were hoping
for, it will minimize the
startup, shutdown and boot
times when switching between
the two OSes. Detailed on

oot Camp's new features page,
Apple has hooked their safe
sleep feature into Boot Camp
to allow Mac OS X to save all
your open applications and
windows, and then boot over
into Windows. Once you're
done in Windows, you can boot
back over to Mac OS X and pick
up where you left off - with
all your open applications and
documents put right back where
you left them.
This
is a great idea and an
interesting compromise between
making it a little too easy to
run Windows on your Mac, and
it also keeps Apple from
stepping on the toes of
virtualization products from
companies like Parallels and
VMware.

Well, this is a surprise. According to Mac|Life, the upcoming service pack for Mac OS X, dubbed 10.5.7, is due to be released on Friday. This is, as
you can imagine, a rumor; Apple hasn't mentioned anything themselves, but apparently the source is within the company itself, so this could be
credible. Mac OS X 10.5.7 is due to bring a whole number of fixes and improvements, in areas such as "networking, syncing and BlueTooth issues,"
according to the website. OS X developers were seeded the most recent build, 9J58, on April the 29th. The build only fixed issues with iChat and
Safari, so it's expected that this is the final.
