ATI to roll out five new chipsets for AMD M2 platform in 2006

ATI Technologies is gearing up to introduce a lineup of five new chipsets for the AMD Socket M2 K8 platform in 2006, industry sources indicated. The upcoming chipsets will be manufactured at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the sources noted.

In 2006, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will adopt the M2 940-pin design for all of its single- and dual-core desktop processors, as reported on May 9.

ATI is preparing the RD580 and RD580C for the high-end segment, with the chipsets supporting ATI???s crossfire dual-graphics card technology, the source indicated. The two solutions will compete against Nvidia's nForce4 SLI (scalable link interface) series. According to ATI???s roadmap, volume production is slated for the end of this year, but sources stated the company will need to adjust its roadmap and bring it in line with AMD???s M2 launch schedule...

Mobo makers: AMD???s Socket M2 to simplify next-generation CPU

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to simplify its 90nm CPU platform with its 940-pin Socket M2 CPU design, according to motherboard makers. As Intel schedules to unify desktop PC- and notebook-use processors in the second half of 2006, AMD is looking to standardize a full CPU line for entry-level, middle-range and high-end segments, indicated the makers.

AM D Taiwan declined to comment on the report.

AMD???s Socket M2 CPU line will originally target the high-end market, the makers said, noting that the chip vendor has informed them that the 940-pin platform will also be released for the mainstream and entry-level segments next year. AMD is now delivering samples of the next-generation CPU to its downstream customers, the makers added.

During the platform migration, products that support the new Socket M2 and the old Socket 939 and 754 will still be on the market by the end of 2006, according to motherboard makers. The makers expect that AMD???s CPU standardization will help reduce production and handling costs...

New UK police powers to hack without a warrant

To the outrage of civil liberties groups and the government opposition, the UK Home Office has begun permitting police and MI5 officers to hack ("remote search") people's computers without their knowledge and without a court warrant. Information gleaned can then be shared with other European forces, in line with a shift in EU policy. The goal, as with all such moves, is to track down terrorists, paedophiles, and cybercriminals. One method for stealth surveillance involves installing spyware on targetted individuals' computers, normally by sending people emails with infected attachments. This can, of course, be done from anywhere. Another method entails hacking directly into people's wifi networks from close range.

Hack into a Windows PC; with Winlockpwn.

But now that a couple of years have passed and the issue has not resolved, Boileau, decided to release the tool on his website.

But this year, they're talking about giving attendees three targets to choose from. "We're thinking of having a contest where we have Vista and OS X and Linux ... and see which one goes first," said Dragos Ruiu, the principal organizer of CanSecWest.
