Microsoft employees feel maligned

Microsofties allege that Redmond's performance review system is rigged.

Google employees get free food, unlimited foosball, and laundry machines at the office. Microsoft employees, by contrast, say that they get a politically charged job review process that has turned into a popularity contest, WashTech.org reports. A supposedly meritocratic system under which employees get ranked on a bell curve has been taken over by managers who try to protect their friends, Microsoft workers told the Seattle-based labor news site. A Microsoft spokesman says a top HR executive is actively reconsidering the system.

Microsoft is exploring new ways to try and convert the remaining people who don't use its Office productivity suite, which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Microsoft isn't quite ready to talk about plans for an ad-supported or online version of its Office franchise. But the company clearly is thinking about it.

"We've put more of our marketing IQ beyond alternative business models and alternative distribution strategies in the last two years," corporate vice president Chris Capossela said in an interview at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in the US this week.

"It's definitely something where we feel there is this whole population of people we are not reaching."..

Microsoft's Matusow and Mahugh on Office's move to open format support

"We feel we are achieving parity in how Office treats the format, by making them all part of just one simple list of formats supported by Office," said Microsoft Office Product Manager Doug Mahugh, in an interview with BetaNews.

For the history of applications up until now, the specification of the format used to encode documents was defined largely and almost inescapably by the functionality of the programs which utilize them. A format represented what an application was designed to do, and that format changed when the application changed.

MS: How we really designed the look and feel of Windows 7

Partners Fix Up Office 2007 and Windows Vista

Microsoft's flagship products feature new user interface elements so innovative that other developers have introduced products to undo the changes.

On Friday, Addintools, based in Hai-nan, China released Classic Menu for Office 2007, after more than six months of beta testing. The user interface enhancement does what Office 2007 can't: Revert to the Office 2003 look and feel.

What a marketing pitch: "Frustrated by endless searches for features on the Ribbon?" Oh, yeah. There are loads of people that don't like change, and Office 2007 offers plenty of it. So that sales pitch has some appeal.

Some colleagues and I were discussing the Addintools product, and one rightly asked: Why upgrade to Office 2007 only to use the Office 2003 UI? That's a very good question. There are some businesses that would need Office 2007 because of dependencies with other 2007, such as the SharePoint Portal Server. But that doesn't mean they would want the training and support hassle of the newer UI. Many people don't like change. For IT managers, change often means trouble, as employees resist or struggle to change.

Office 2003 SP3: Are new formats more secure?

Blocking old file formats in the Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) release was meant to bolster security for Microsoft customers, but whether the new formats are any more secure than older ones is debatable.

Few within IT feel compelled to side with Microsoft when debates over file formats, backward compatibility and security emerge, yet the Redmond software giant's decision to block a swathe of old formats such as pre-97 PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Corel Draw formats has been met with sympathy from analysts.

Microsoft said it was attempting to address security concerns by blocking the older file formats. "By default, these file types are blocked because the parsing code that Office 2003 uses to open and save the file types is less secure. Therefore, opening and saving these file types may pose a risk to you," it said in its advisory.

Vista, Office 2007 To Launch in NY After Thanksgiving

The long-touted Microsoft Vista/Office 2007 tandem launch is on for the last week in November in New York, sources said. This event will focus on business usage and scenarios. The new client Windows operating system and Office client and server applications have been promised for volume business customers by year's end and for consumers by early 2007.

Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division, would not comment on a specific launch timing or venue but said the company remains on track for the two promised delivery windows. He applied the usual caveat: Microsoft will not ship the code if it's not ready. "I talked to Antoine Leblond and Kurt last week and they feel very good about the track they're on and I know Jim Allchin and the Vista team feel the same way. There's no new news," Raikes told CRN in a meeting at its New York City offices Tuesday.

Office 14 to be named Microsoft Office System 2009?

Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". There has been little to no information on the upcoming Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010. Microsoft failed to provide any solid information at last years PDC, choosing to focus on its Office Live offerings. Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear: In the roadmap you can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009.

Office:mac 2008; An Early Look

A few of our members have been able to get their hands on a copy of Office:mac 2008 a little early and have provided us with some screenshots and opinions about Microsoft's latest version of their productivity software for the Mac platform.

Users migrating from Office 2007 on their PC will feel right at home with Office:mac 2008, or, almost anyways. Microsoft decided to take a similar approach to the popular "Ribbon" interface introduced in Office 2007, by introducing a new interface dubbed "Elements Gallery" in Office 2008. The new interface features commonly used tools at the top of the window and expandable menus containing additional tools and templates, which are sectioned using tabs, directly underneath.

But hey, why not see for your self? - Take a look here.

Office:mac 2008 is expected to ship January 15th, 2008.

Office 12 Christened Office 2007

Microsoft is now referring to the next version of its desktop office suite, code-named "Office 12," as "Office 2007." Microsoft watcher Steven Bink is reporting that Microsoft officials used the Office 2007 name at IT Forum.

He also points to an Office Online page that uses the same terminology. Microsoft officials have held fast to the company line that Office 12 will ship towards the end of calendar 2006.
