Windows 7 build 7077 leaks

According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Ballmer: Apple's Mac growth is a "rounding error"

Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer is a man who's not afraid to talk down his competitors. When Apple initially released the iPhone, he stated that it had no chance of gaining a significant market share. Now, when speaking to a group of market analysts, he has said that the growth that the Cupertino company is seeing with their Mac product range can be attributed to a rounding error. Whilst he was at the 2009 Financial Analyst Meeting, Ballmer said, "Share versus Apple, you know, we think we may have ticked up a little tick, but when you get right down to it, it's a rounding error.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079

Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758 and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft hinted at a May public release for the RC.

x64 Kernel patch causes random restarts, fix on the way

Microsoft has disclosed that update 932596, a patch released for the Kernel Patch Protection feature that is included with x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, seems to be causing random restarts on certain machines. A Stop error is then generated (error code 0x0000001E, 0x000000D1, or another Stop error code). x86 versions of Windows are not affected since they do not include the Kernel Patch Protection feature (also known as PatchGuard), a technology that is meant to prevent third-party interventions into the core of the operating system.

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: The blue screen of death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows śstopť screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

Microsoft takes on 404 pages with Live Search

Microsoft plans to convert the 404 error pages on the microsoft.com domain, as well as other websites the company owns, to error pages with Live Search capabilities. This will allow Microsoft's customers to search for what they were looking for right away, instead of being stuck at a 404 error page that is equivalent to hitting a dead end.

Furthermore, Microsoft has also released a toolkit for webmasters who also want to transform their 404 pages to search-enabled pages. The 1.13MB Web Page Error Toolkit, a customizable ASP.net application that replaces the default error page on one's IIS server, is not limited to Live Search; web admins can choose whichever search engine they prefer.

Why Microsoft Should Fix Its Error Messages In Windows 7

Much of the discussion around Windows 7 has centred around how the interface will change and what features will be removed. But there's another area Microsoft could improve -- the often cryptic and unhelpful error messages Windows produces -- and it doesn't need a brand-new development team to do it. Here's some of the most embarrassing examples from Vista, which ideally will get improved or eradicated when Windows 7 finally appears.

Human error tops the list of security threats

IT managers also say its insider threats that really worry them the most
When it comes to security, human threats score much higher than those posed by technology. So says a new survey by consulting firm Deloitte of more than 100 technology, media and telecommunications companies worldwide.

Seventy-five per cent of companies listed human error as the leading cause of security failures such as breakdowns and systems outages. Forty-eight per cent also cited operations and technology lapses as key causes of security failures. Problems resulting from third parties such as contractors and business partners, meanwhile, received 28 per cent of the votes as a root cause of security failures.

Programming error gives CT scan patients radiation overdose

In a rather off-the-track technology related report, a hospital named Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has come into a bit of trouble due to problems with its CT scanner; a programming error has caused the machine to give patients eight times the maximum amount of radiation that's nominal. According to the LA Times, the hospital recently began utilizing a new protocol in order to create a specialized type of scan used to diagnose strokes, which unfortunately went a bit wrong. In order to use said protocol, the machine had to be reset, thus overriding the pre-programmed instructions that were included with the scanner when it was installed.
