Gaza propaganda war takes place online

Branded by some as "hacktivism", the conflict between Israel and Palestine has spilled onto the web, with activists from both sides defacing websites, taking over computers and shutting down Facebook groups, according to a report from the BBC yesterday. A group of pro-Palestinian hackers defaced several high-profile websites on January 7th, including a US Army website and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's website. The group, who call themselves "Agd_Scorp/Peace Crew" replaced pages with white space and a well-known photograph of a boy throwing stones at an Israeli tank in Gaza, and the Israeli, American and British flags with a red strike through them. Text underneath read, "Stop attacks u israel and usa ! you cursed nations !

Syria Suspicious of Israel, Blocks Facebook

Syrian authorities have blocked Facebook, the popular Internet hangout, over what seems to be fears of Israeli "infiltration" of Syrian social networks on the Net, according to residents and media reports. Residents of Damascus said that they have not been able to enter Facebook for more than two weeks. An Associated Press reporter got a blank page when he tried to open Facebook's home page Friday from the Syrian capital.

Syrian officials were not available for comment Friday because of the Muslim weekend, but some reports have suggested that the ban was intended to prevent Israeli users from infiltrating Syrian social networks. Lebanon's daily As-Safir reported that Facebook was blocked on Nov. 18. It said the authorities took the step because Israelis have been entering Syria-based groups.

"Vista sells on almost 100 per cent of all the new consumer PCs around the world," the Microsoft CEO proclaimed. He added that the operating system was also selling on, "45 per cent of all of new business PCs". A Better Way to Stream TV?

A startup called Arootz, based in Netanya, Israel, says it has devised a solution that greatly increases the Net's ability to deliver video without requiring substantial new infrastructure.

The approach takes advantage of two existing (and not very esoteric) technologies: a standard Internet feature known as multicasting, by which the same information can be sent simultaneously to many recipients using just one data stream; and off-the-shelf hard drives that can store vast amounts of data fast and cheap.

The combination of the two represents a radical new approach to using the Net. Here's how it works: In today's world, when a person sitting at a PC clicks a link to watch a video, a series of servers delivers the content from its source to the end user in what's essentially an individualized person-to-person channel. If 10,000 people in a city all want to watch Desperate Housewives, each one of them gets their own personal bandwidth-hogging data stream. ..

Gates Welcomes Competition With Google

JERUSALEM - Google Inc. is fierce competition for Microsoft Corp., but the software giant does not fear the race and plans to upgrade his search technology in the next six months, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates said in remarks published Wednesday.

On his first-ever trip to Israel, Gates praised Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Israel's contributions to the global high-tech market. In interviews with Israeli TV and newspapers, he also answered questions about Microsoft's fierce competition with Mountain View, California-based Google.

"We are not afraid of Google, but there is intense competition between us. Google is our main competitor, brilliant people work there, but Internet search engines are still in a terrible state compared to where they could be," Gates was quoted as saying in the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot.

"This is a situation that we hope will change for the better in the next six months. We are working on it, as are other companies, such as Google and Yahoo," Gates added in comments that were translated into Hebrew...

Botnet Attack Sinks Its Fangs into eBay Accounts

A network of infected zombie computers has been roped into acting as vectors in a new distributed attack that's targeting eBay accounts.

The attack, which is trying to wrestle personal financial data out of eBay accounts by brute force, has been going on for at least a week, officials at Aladdin Knowledge Systems told eWEEK. The security firm discovered the new botnet Sept. 3.

The botnet is planting what Aladdin calls a "sophisticated" Trojan on the systems of people who visit hacked Web sites. The security firm said the attack is being launched from up to 300 popular Web sites, snagging vulnerable visitors to those sites.

Because Aladdin is based in Israel, the security firm focused on sites popular in that country, finding that a popular e-commerce site for price comparisons and the main site of the largest Israeli labor union have been infected, among many other sites. ..

"In general it's been improving but we still have a long way to go," Brin told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Jerusalem to mark Israel's 60th anniversary. "Things have been going well this year...it's hard to predict where social networking will come out."

Brin also reiterated that he was "very happy" with a two-week test whereby rival Yahoo used Google search advertisements but said he had nothing to add at this stage on any possible further tie-ups.

Microsoft on your telly: a history of the company's Internet TV strategy

There may not be another company as well-positioned to take advantage of the growth in IPTV as Microsoft. Despite being primarily a software company, Microsoft has long had a passion for television.

The company launched the 24-hour cable news channel MSNBC in July of 1996 in a joint venture with NBC. Just less than a year later, Microsoft purchased WebTV, one of the first products to marry television and the Internet. In 2000 they acquired Israel-based Peach Networks, a provider of technology for digital television. The late nineties also saw a number of television-related investments by Microsoft, in companies such as AT&T, @Home, Comcast, and Rogers.

While the 1990s were a period of heavy investment in television companies (including a number of acquisitions), the 2000s have so far been much more about Microsoft developing television-related technology. It is on the resulting products and services that we now focus our attention.

For its part, Yahoo has said it was considering a "number of value maximizing strategic alternatives" and would evaluate any proposal made by Microsoft.

TeraDisc Promises 1TB+ Optical Media

Blu-ray and HD DVD have pushed the limits of optical storage further than anyone thought possible. But a new technology has emerged which makes Blu-ray's 50GB capacity look tiny. Mempile in Israel says it's able to fit an incredible 1TB of data onto one "TeraDisc" which is the same size as CDs and DVDs. That's 20 times the capacity of a maxed-out dual-layer Blu-ray disc.

The incredible capacity achieved using this new technology is made possible by employing 200 5GB layers, each one only five microns apart. The discs are completely transparent to the red lasers which are used in the associated recorder. Prototypes have already been made to store up to 800GB of data, and Mempile says it will crack the 1TB barrier before moving on to build 5TB blue laser disks. Dr. Beth Erez, Mempile's Chief Marketing Officer says that the first 1TB disks have a lifespan of 50 years and could be on the shelves in two to three years.

Online Ads to Surpass Radio

Media services firm ZenithOptimedia forecasts that online advertising will soon overtake radio advertising: worldwide spending on internet advertising will grow 28.2% in 2007, compared with a rise of just 3.7% in the rest of the advertising market. In a forthcoming report on worldwide advertising, Zenith says: " We now expect the internet to overtake radio in 2008, a year earlier than in our last forecast. We forecast the internet to account for nearly 9 percent of global ad spend by 2009, and its share should reach double digits early next decade ." The internet now attracts more than 10% of advertising spending in Norway and Sweden as well as the U.K., and is expected to pass the 10% mark in the U.S., Australia, Canada, Denmark, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan by 2009.

Zenith said it had "downgraded" its forecasts for newspaper and magazine advertising as publishers move to invest more in online products and less in print. Advertising expenditure is " still growing in both media, in nominal terms at least, but after adjusting for inflation newspaper expenditure is essentially stagnant ," Zenith said. Worldwide online advertising spending is set to hit 16.6 million (US$32.6 million) this year, slightly behind the 18.2 million expected spend on radio adverts and substantially behind the 63.1 million spending on newspaper adverts. But by 2009, internet advertising is set to hit 21.5 million, with radio on 19.5 million and newspapers on 66.9 million.
