The failure of Windows XP 64-bit edition to really take off. "When Windows XP Professional x64 actually arrived, it was all pretty much underwhelming. This is actually not Microsoft's fault. While the kids in Redmond did hype Windows 64-bit enhancements, they also cautioned that x64 would be a tool mostly for developers and certain vertical applications," the Extreme editors admit.

29.12.20072009's 50 most innovative companies
The Fast Company has unleashed its list of the 50 most innovative companies for 2009. Innovation is a key nowadays to making (and more importantly,
selling) products, so making a top 50 list is certainly a grand achievement. Without further ado, here is the list. 1. Team Obama: Barack Obama made
the top position because his team innovated in his quest to become the next President of the United States. He employed the power of technology, using
Twitter and various other internet tools to connect with voters, doing what no other President has done fully before. 2. Google: Google continues to
make it to innovation lists, and with little wonder.

28.12.2007US Complains About EU Tech Tax
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), along with the Japanese government, has filed a trade complaint against the European Union, saying
the E.U. has violated a World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement by taxing the import of some tech products. They allege that the E.U. is illegally
imposing import duties on cable and satellite boxes that can access the Internet, flat-panel computer monitors, and some multifunction computer
printers, the USTR announced Wednesday. Those products represented a $70 billion global export market in 2007, the USTR said in a news release.
" It is critical that the European Union live up to its
obligations instead of imposing new taxes and duties on innovative
technologies, " U.S.Trade Representative Susan Schwab said in a statement. " The EU should be working with the United States to promote new
technologies, not finding protectionist gimmicks to apply new duties to these products. " Representatives of the E.U. did not immediately respond
to a request for comments.

More than 15% of 1,012 respondents said they want HDTV.

Seattle tops 'Forbes' most wired cities list
The list-happy business magazine Forbes Thursday released its annual survey of the nation's most wired cities. Topping the list is
Seattle, the home of Amazon.com, Starbucks, and Microsoft (well, it's in a suburb).
Surprisingly, none of California's
famed tech cities are in the top 10. San Francisco dropped to No. 11 from No. 4 last year, mainly because of its lack of high-speed access options.
But take heart, San Franciscans: Forbes still says you're the most tech savvy city in the country, since you have the highest percentage of
home broadband Internet users in the country. Following right behind the "city by the bay" are San Diego and Los Angeles.

Ellison tops tech exec salary list
Congratulations, Larry Ellison, you're No. 1!
Forbes , as it does every year, has released its list of top executive salaries. In the
overall list as well as the technology category, Ellison, the Oracle chief exec and billionaire yachtsman, was tops with total 2007 compensation at
$192.9 million.
It's another big win for Ellison, who recently won a $3 million tax break on his $200
million estate in swanky Woodside, Calif. Ellison's lawyers successfully argued that the house suffered from "significant functional obsolescence"
because it turns out there's a limited market for 23-acre estates built to look like 16th century Japanese summer palaces.

Questions and comments about Firefox 3, IE 8, the future of
Web browsers, cloud computing, and how it all comes together.
Paul Thurrott: So it's always amusing to me when the mainstream press
tries to cover tech products, but I was particularly interested in this one since I'm in
the middle of writing my own Firefox 3 review. I think that terms like "innovative" are thrown around too casually these days, and while I realize
the competitive advantages inherent in using terms like that, let's be honest here: Firefox 3 is excellent, but it's not innovative at all,
it's just an evolution of what browsers have always been. And that's fine, I guess. One thing this guy does get right, however, is that the
browser is increasingly important because it's the gateway through which we do and will in the future experience cloud computing

Internet Explorer beats iPod in tech poll
Internet Explorer is the most
influential technology of the
past quarter-century,
according to a new CompTIA
study of IT pros. The firm
says that a full two-thirds of
all results nominated the
Microsoft web browser for the
top spot, eclipsing the second
place Microsoft Word, which
obtained 56 percent. Notably,
virtually all of the top five
was dominated by Microsoft
products, according to the
survey; only Apple's iPod was
able to crack the upper ranks
of the poll, tying with Excel
at 49 percent and falling just
behind Windows 95, which
reached 50 percent.
Exact reasons were not
given for IE's popularity in
the list, though the browser
is commonly credited with
taking over from Netscape
Navigator (which reached ninth
place at 31 percent) as the de
facto basis for web browsing
and growing use of the
Internet from the mid-1990s
onward.
Other
top ten products included the
BlackBerry messenger (39
percent), Adobe's Photoshop
visual editor (35 percent),
McAfee VirusScan (32 percent),
and the original PalmPilot (31
percent), which helped pioneer
the PDA and ultimately the
smartphone. Most of the
products on the list were
chosen because they were the
first in their class or the
first to make a particular
service extremely popular,
CompTIA noted.

Triple-cool rating for Apple
Apple has taken a remarkable three places on a new list of the 20 coolest brands in the United Kingdom.
The Top 20 CoolBrands
list was headed by Aston Martin, but Apple took second place with iPod, seventh with its main brand, and nineteenth with iTunes.
Other tech brands to make the list were YouTube (3), Bang & Olufson (4) Google (5), PlayStation (6), Nintendo (9), eBay (13) and Amazon (20).
An initial 'shortlist' of almost 1200 brands was presented to the 26 members of the independent and voluntary CoolBrands Council,
predominantly marketers, designers and journalists. After council members had scored each brand, the top 625 were voted on by a 3265-member consumer

Nvidia has announced five new mainstream GeForce 200M series GPUs this afternoon and all are based on TSMC's 40nm process, adding support for DirectX
10.1 and GDDR5 - two firsts for Nvidia's products.
The company's previous GeForce 200M products were, in fact, based on the
older 55nm G92 GPU which has found its way into many of Nvidia's desktop products in the past 18 months and are derived from the two and a half
year-old G80 architecture.
