Microsoft made a statement on Thursday that is sure to rile its detractors: the Windows Server operating system is being chosen in greater numbers by corporations over UNIX and Linux for its reliability.

Is Windows 7 the Linux-netbook killer?

When it comes to PCs and laptops, Microsoft had little to fear with Linux as much as it does the Mac. But now the new threat to Windows comes in the form of 'netbooks' - lightweight, low-cost laptops that typically use Intel's low-powered Atom processor and don't come with substantial amounts of RAM or powerful graphics processors.

New Windows Vista Wallpapers Released

Since the final stages of Vista's development, many have been wondering why no official Windows Vista branded wallpaper had been included, unlike in Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows.

Today, Microsoft unveiled a new set of "Windows Vista Ultimate" branded wallpapers on the Ultimate Extras site.

There are two wallpapers available, one of which features a large version of the start orb, while the other features the new "flare" design as seen on the new Windows Vista packaging. Both wallpapers are available in a wide variety of sizes.

So, maybe Microsoft finally heard us... or maybe they were just keeping it a suprise?

Vista RTM to include animated wallpapers!

The most recent in a series of rumors about what was previously called Desktop Aurora says that the long-awaited animated desktop wallpapers would appear in Windows Vista's final release under the name "Motion Desktop", but Aurora wouldn't be the only animated wallpaper to be included with the operating system, but there would rather be three different ones.

While Aurora is obvious, an animated cherry blossom tree would also be part of it, along with another one that's still unknown as of yet.

The versions of Vista that will include the new wallpapers are currently unknown, along with the customizability degree for the user.

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview Available

Stardock is pleased to announce that the DeskScapes 2.0 preview version is now available. DeskScapes allows users of Windows Vista to have animated wallpapers on their desktop. It runs the Stardock created .DREAM format which can contain videos as animated wallpapers or dynamically generated content.

What makes DeskScapes special is that animated wallpapers can be run that use hardly any system resources (obviously this will depend on what animated wallpaper is chosen). It integrates seamlessly with the Windows Vista desktop background dialog so picking animated wallpapers is much the same as picking any other desktop wallpaper.

Microsoft Says No Windows Virtualization on Top of Linux

Microsoft will not allow Windows Vista or Windows XP to be virtualized on top of Linux, Sam Ramji, the director of Microsoft's open-source software lab, said at the annual LinuxWorld Conference and Expo here Aug. 7.

"What we have heard predominantly from customers is that they want to be able to mix and match their data center applications, but we haven't seen significant demand for Linux applications on the desktop or for desktop virtualization on top of Linux," Ramji said in an address titled "Linux and Windows Interoperability: On the Metal and on the Wire."

But, he said that while he does hear a lot of requests for this from developers in the Linux community, the feedback Microsoft is getting from customers and its Interoperability Executive Customer Council with regard to the desktop is that they want .Net and Java interoperability...

Animated wallpapers no longer just for the Vista elite

Animated wallpapers have been one of the “Extras” that Microsoft has touted as a selling point for customers of its priciest Windows Vista SKU. But now Stardock is bringing animated wallpapers to the Vista masses.

Stardock, a Gold Certified Microsoft partner, worked with Microsoft on DreamScene — a desktop-display feature that allows users to make looped, full-motion video their desktop wallpaper (as opposed to using static images only for background wallpaper). After a number of delays, Microsoft finally released DreamScene in September 2007.

Stardock helped to create much of the initial wallpaper content for DreamScene and then went on to release DeskScapes 1.0 for Vista Ultimate users interested in enhancing DreamScene. With DeskScapes 2.0, Stardock has decided to make animated wallpapers avaialble to users of Vista Business, Home Premium and Ultimate users. The Standard edition of the product will be available as a free download; an enhanced version with additional features and “premium” content also will be availbale for $19.95.

Linux: Coming soon to a Windows laptop near you

The Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin provides an interesting twist on the most cutting-edge Windows machines from Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and others: they're all running Linux.

No, he's not talking about dual-boot systems. (OK, kind of.) Instead he's talking about "fast boot," which an increasing number of computer manufacturers are delivering via Linux-based solutions from DeviceVM and others. Resource hound that it is, Microsoft apparently needs some help from Linux getting started from the once "cancerous" Linux.

Shift Linux: A New Direction

Since its incarnation in 2006, Shift Linux has had an ambitious team behind it. We have always strived to be "more than just another linux distribution", a goal which has never been more important than it is now. Over the next little while, Shift will be reborn and redefined, moving farther away from traditional Linux roots, and into something newer. Linux will always be our core, but on top of that, we need to use new technologies, both those that exist and those which we can only imagine, to build something fresh. Today, Shift Linux will move forward. We have several new goals that are being set. First of all, Shift needs to be streamlined.

Migrating from Windows to Linux: the gentle guide

While we completely support Windows here at WinBeta, there are still many Windows users out there who are very interested in giving Linux a try and seeing how it stacks up against Microsoft's products. The following guide is as good a place to start as any:

Linux has long been held in mystique as an operating system for hard-core techies or hackers. Yet, this is far from true for todays distros. A modern version of Linux is as easy to setup and use as the Macintosh is legendary for. Heres reasons why people stick to Windows and how those factors can be solved in what we like to call a ˜gentle approach to Linux.

Windows is Caught Between Mac and Linux

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols: On the high end, people are buying Macs instead of Windows PCs. On the low end, Linux is eating Windows alive.

For the first time in ages, the sale of new PCs with Windows as a percentage of the PC market is declining sharply. The new winner is the Mac, but, while no one does a good job of tracking the still-new, pre-installed Linux desktop market, it's also clear that Linux is finally making impressive inroads into Windows' once unchallenged market share.
