23.11.2008What flavor Linux do Dell users want?
Either Dell is really going
through with putting Linux on
their products or they are
interested in doing extensive
research before making the
final decision. In a new
desktop Linux survey, Dell
begins by asking which models
of Dell desktop and notebook
systems customers prefer,
where they're used and what
applications customers use on
them - in other words, Dell
wants to know what a Linux
desktop system will be used
for. Dell's survey goes on to
ask what level of Linux
support people want from them.
Would support from software
vendors and the open-source
community be enough, or do
consumers want full-scale
corporate support? Finally,
Dell asks customers which
distributions they would most
like to see: Novell/SUSE, Red
Hat, Fedora, openSUSE or
Ubuntu. Users also have the
option of nominating their
favorite Linux distribution
that isn't on that list.
In the Dell blog that
introduces the Linux survey,
Matt Domsch, Dell's Linux
software architect, wrote:
" We're crafting product
offerings in response, but
we'd like a little more
direct feedback from you: your
preferences, your desires. We
recognize some people prefer
notebooks over desktops,
high-end models over value
models, your favorite Linux
distribution, telephone-based
support over community-based
support, and so on. We can't
offer everything -- all
systems, all distributions,
all support options -- so
we've crafted a survey to let
you help us prioritize what we
should deliver for you ."

02.04.2008Victorian Government Microsoft's $23 million Vista patsy: consultant
While the rest of the world is shying away from Windows Vista and looking to deploy Linux across schools, the Victorian State Government in Australia

Microsoft Holding Its Ground

Some prominent figures
in the Linux community believe
that as enterprises increase

"
When the [Linux desktop]

CEO Stuart Cohen told eWEEK in

them. I really think that when
enough of their enterprise
customers' office workers,

acknowledging that he has no

Dell: certain PCs will be available with Linux
Dell plans to expand Linux
support beyond existing offers
of servers and the Precision
workstation line. That means
Linux pre-installed on select
desktop and notebook systems,
although which specific models
is currently unclear. On
Friday February 16, Dell
launched IdeaStorm where it
allowed the public to suggest
what the second largest PC
maker should aim for. Linux
support was the number one
request and on March 13, Dell
launched a detailed Linux
survey asking for feedback.
Dell claims over 100,000
people took the survey, of
which highlights
include:- More than 70%
of survey respondents said
they would use a Dell system
with a Linux operating system
for both home and office use.
- Survey respondents
indicated they want a
selection of notebook and
desktop
offerings.
- Majority of
survey respondents said that
existing community-based
support forums would meet
their technical support needs
for a tested and validated
Linux operating system on a
Dell system.
- Survey
respondents indicated that
improved hardware support for
Linux is as important as the
distribution(s)
offered.
Dell also
noted that based on comments
on the Direct2Dell blog, the
majority of users are less
concerned about a specific
distribution and are more
interested in kernel level and
open driver support. Dell is
working on that as well: for
new Linux desktops and
notebooks, drivers already in
the mainline kernel.org
kernels will be used for as
many components as possible
and will be included in the
user's chosen distribution.
As well, where there is a
choice, Dell plans to include
components with a Free driver
as opposed to components with
a non-Free driver. Where there
are open source drivers, Dell
will continue to encourage the
development (by all parties)
towards open source drivers,
but will also provide the
closed-source drivers.
