For the second time in three months, Microsoft has released a buggy patch for problems it had deemed to be "critical."
Messages on Microsoft's newsgroups about problems began accumulating as early as Wednesday Oct. 12, within 24 hours of the patches' debut. Late Friday, Microsoft acknowledged the buggy patch in one of its infrequent security advisories, and said that customers had reported a wide variety of strange behaviors after installing one of the three critical patches released that week.

Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web
Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.
The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

If you use the Option-Command-I keystroke rather than
plain old Command-I, you will see the Get Info Inspector. This is one "Get Info" window which will stay present and change to whatever file or
folder is selected in the Finder. Just click on an item while it is open, and the inspector will change. (Bonus tip: the arrows on the keyboard work
well for items in the same location.)

Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info
Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1
(6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.
Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)
Filename:
windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe
Size: 684MB
Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself)
were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

09.10.2008Microsoft to RTM Windows 7 this week? Build 7260 leaks
Earlier today Neowin reported that Windows 7 build 7232 had leaked. What a difference a few more hours makes, now 7260 has leaked and the Russian site
Wzor claims that Microsoft will build the RTM (release to manufacturing) build between June 15-19. If Wzor is correct, and that's a big if and
rumour, then we may see the final Windows 7 RTM build ready this weekend. Internal sources indicate that 7260 is still the latest build under the
win7_rtm branch. Build 7260 carries the tag 7260.win7_rtm.090612-2110 and is an RTM escrow build meaning vigorous testing will commence to ensure this
is the final code unless there are show stopper bugs.

16.06.2009Windows 7 pre-beta build: Whats inside
Microsoft isnt going to show Windows 7 to attendees of the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles until Tuesday, October 28. But new
info about whats part of the pre-beta build that will be provided to show-goers is beginning to trickle out.
"According to a variety of
sources, the build that will be distributed at PDC and, a week-plus later, at the companys Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) will
be one of the M3 (Milestone 3) builds. Like the build that leaked in September, this will be a 6801 numbered build, sources say. But it doesnt seem
to be the same one I saw a few weeks back. UX Evangelist blogger Stephen Chapman says it will likely be a 6801 M3 build which Microsoft finalized on
October 20."

19.02.2009Microsoft Messenger is Filtering .info Domain Names
Microsoft has always tried to
block transmission on the
Messenger network of certain
references considered
malicious. But recently they
ratcheted up the standards.
A blogger
named Joost de Valk determined
that
Microsoft is
blocking all lines referencing
a site with a .info domain
name. For example, I just
tested sending the
line
"The Metropolitan
Transportation Authority web
site is
http://www.mta.info"
to another Messenger user and
she didn't get that line.
MTA.info is
perhaps the best-known of
.info sites, but as a
top-level domain it is largely
a failure. There is a
perception that it is a haven
for malware distributors, but
I haven't seen any actual
data on that.
But even strings which
clearly are not links are
blocked, such
as:
"Messenger blocks
strings with '.info' in
them"
Why? It seems
that all they are doing is
looking for ".info" and
blocking. Anything more
complicated might create
unacceptable delays. They
probably have a general list
of strings they block,
including other non-.info
malicious Web sites, and they
have just added this TLD to
that list.
