Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web

Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.

The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

How to Build (or win) a Tiny Windows Home Server

Donavon from Home Server Hacks has put together instructions on how to build a tiny little Windows Home Server using an ARTiGO Pico-ITX kit. It's an interesting read and an especially good pick if your main concern is low power consumption - the Pico uses a staggering 13-watts of power at idle. While the board isn't the most plug and play compatible hardware out there for Home Server, this will show you how to make it work.

Microsoft to RTM Windows 7 this week? Build 7260 leaks

Earlier today Neowin reported that Windows 7 build 7232 had leaked. What a difference a few more hours makes, now 7260 has leaked and the Russian site Wzor claims that Microsoft will build the RTM (release to manufacturing) build between June 15-19. If Wzor is correct, and that's a big if and rumour, then we may see the final Windows 7 RTM build ready this weekend. Internal sources indicate that 7260 is still the latest build under the win7_rtm branch. Build 7260 carries the tag 7260.win7_rtm.090612-2110 and is an RTM escrow build meaning vigorous testing will commence to ensure this is the final code unless there are show stopper bugs.

Windows 7 build 7105 RC Milestone reached

Builds for Windows 7 keep powering forward; it seems there are new ones being reported weekly, but here's one that might be worth sitting up and paying attention for: it appears Windows 7 has reached build 7105, an RC build. But in addition to this, it's worth remembering that a Windows 7 RC could possibly be available April 10th. This timing makes it seem as though Neowin's exclusive source was dead on, and that in a few days time Microsoft will announce availability of an RC build for its latest operating system. The string for this build is 6.1.7105.0.090404-1235_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GB1CULFRER_EN_DVD, and it was compiled on April 4th.

Windows Vista Build 5219 Ultimate Edition - Quick Review

The Facts:

Build String: 5219.winmain_idx02.050830-2010

ISO Size: 2.73 GB (2,937,989,120 bytes)

On Tuesday at PDC (Professional Developers Conference) Microsoft proudly unveiled the latest incarnation of its new flagship desktop operating system. Windows Vista build 5219 is to date the most complete and stunning look at this new next-generation OS we've seen yet.

It seems that with every major release so far of Vista we've had a bit of controversy. This time it was leaked screenshots that were from another build date of 5219. Those shots show quite a number of things that you won't see with this build (or they're just disabled by default). It will come as a disappointment to many of you who were looking forward to all of those features. Fear not though, there are many many changes in this PDC build that will keep you poking around for quite some time.

I've had the opportunity to play with this build some and can report a few changes before we get started taking a look at it.
