Microsoft's Latest Critical Fixes Include Buggy Windows Patch
For the second time in three months, Microsoft has released a buggy patch for problems it had deemed to be "critical."
Messages on Microsoft's newsgroups about problems began accumulating as early as Wednesday Oct. 12, within 24 hours of the patches' debut. Late Friday, Microsoft acknowledged the buggy patch in one of its infrequent security advisories, and said that customers had reported a wide variety of strange behaviors after installing one of the three critical patches released that week.

Black Maximized Windows Borders Fixed
The Windows team posted an
exciting post on their new
Shell:Revealed blog, giving
people who wanted the black
maximized window borders to
disappear a rest, because the
problem is apparently fixed
starting from today's builds.
Due to the very short time
limit until the upcoming RC2
build, we're still unsure
whether the final version
distributed to testers will
feature that change.
The "fix", although
quite welcome, isn't really
what people asked for:
"In the end, we decided
that we like the black and
think it is the right thing to
do, but we want to respect the
user's color choice for users
who bother to make a change.
So - starting in today's
build, we have significantly
backed off the amount of black
that is mixed in with the
user's color for maximized
windows". Basically,
they are offering people the
choice to customize the color,
although there will still be a
black shade to it. The fix
isn't apparently very
noticeable on the default
color, though it is most
useful on strong colors.

06.08.2008Black Hat: Vista users urged to beware of IPv6
Vista users would be wise to
turn off the Teredo IP
tunneling system that is
enabled by default in
Microsoft's newest operating
system, since attackers may be
able to exploit it for
phishing, pharming and other
mischief. James Hoagland,
principal security researcher
for Symantec Corp., issued
that warning Thursday during a
presentation at the Black Hat
2007 conference.
Hoagland -- along
with fellow researchers Matt
Conover, Tim Newsham and Ollie
Whitehouse -- conducted an
extensive analysis of Vista.
They found that while
Microsoft has significantly
improved security in the
latest version of Windows, new
vulnerabilities were likely
created in the process.
Hoagland
said the best example may be
Vista's default enabling of
Teredo. The software giant has
embraced Teredo as a way to
help users transition from
IPv4, the long-standing
protocol that is quickly
running short on IP address
space, to IPv6, a more
advanced protocol that vastly
increases the number of IP
addresses available to
networked devices...

03.08.2007AMD launches second "Black Edition" processor
Following the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition flagship processor, AMD has introduced a 5000+ mainstream version.
Compared to the
regular 5000+ chip, the Black Edition comes with the same 2.6 GHz clock speed, 1 MB L2 cache and 65 watt power envelope, but includes a customizable
clock multiplier that allows users to adjust the performance of the processor.
The processor is aims to attract the eyeballs of
mainstream end-users, according to AMD.
The added feature comes at a slight premium: The 5000+ Black Edition has a tray price of
$136, while the regular version lists for $125. Actual retail pricing of the new Black Edition CPU processor should follow recent AMD processor
pricing trends and should be near the tray price: The 6400+, with a tray price of $251, hit the market for an average of $272 in the week of August
21, but recently fell to an average of $249, according to Pricegrabber.com. The regular 5000+ processor currently sells for an average of $113.

26.09.2007Apple to offer discounts of up to 15% on Black Friday
While Apple is remaining tight-lipped on what we can expect from their stores on Black Friday, one analyst is predicting consumers will see discounts
of up to 15%. According to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, Apple's Black Friday sale will be more aggressive than usual. Apple products are
traditionally more expensive than their non-apple counterparts and price reductions are not commonplace for the tech giant. In past years, Apple has
offered Black Friday discounts between 5 and 10%. If Wu's prediction is correct, consumers will be seeing a reduced price on the iPod, iMac, and
MacBooks. However, Wu is skeptical as to whether or not the iPhone will be subject to the Black Friday discounts.

27.11.2008Quacking Through Licensing Complexity
Think the latest version of
the GPL is confusing? Just try
to keep track of the software
components that are governed
by version 3 versus those that
are not. If that doesnt make
ones head spin, the task will
be compounded by the presence
of other open source license
schemes, including the Apache,
BSD and Open Source Initiative
(OSI) licenses.
Black Duck
Software claims it has the
answer to the problem of
staying in compliance with a
flock of licensing
requirementswhatever they may
be. Black Duck released
protexIP/development 4.4 on
Aug. 6, approximately one
month after GNU General Public
License version 3 (GPLv3) was
finalized.
The 4.4 release is
designed to help organizations
incorporate code from open
source projects and
distinguish projects that have
explicitly switched to GPLv3
from those that have not.
GPLv3 is not wholly compatible
with earlier versions of the
GPLmost prominently, certain
GPLv2 licensesmaking it
difficult to ensure that
components licenses do not
conflict.

27.06.2008XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray. jcxp.net -
