Turkey Screen Saver

Adorn your desktop with some turkeys strutting across a simple black background. As the turkeys amble across the screen, they show a little knowledge of what will become of them Thanksgiving day--making for a poignant scene of innocence the moment before all is corrupted. You can choose from one to ten turkeys; the program also offers password protection.

Note that the screen saver shows the vendor's name on your desktop, and although this brash self-promotion can seem a bit annoying, it is tolerable--especially since the program is free, and because it's seasonal, you'll probably want it on your desktop for only a short time.

But the full-screen NASA photographs will jettison you to places far removed from this mudane, terrestrial existence.

Amazon Kindle to launch larger version on Wednesday

It appears that all signs are pointing to a larger version of the Kindle being announced this Wednesday. The NYT had reported that an announcement as early as this week could be made and then shortly after Amazon posted a notice that a press conference would be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 10:30 am ET. Other than a larger screen not many details are known; it's expected that the devices larger screen will make it more suited for newspaper reading. Currently the smaller screen inhibits the device from replacing the traditional newspaper. If Amazon can create a device that does replace the newspaper in its entirety then they may have a huge hit on their hands.

Windows Server 2008 R2 to support up to 256 CPU cores

Microsoft said Thursday the next upgrade of its Windows Server operating system will scale up to 256 logical processors. Microsoft defines a logical processor as the number of physical processors multiplied by the number of cores as well as the number of threads, said corporate vice president for Windows Server and solutions, Bill Laing, during a keynote speech at the company's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC).

Thus, Windows Server 2008 R2 will be able to, for example, support a system with 64 physical processors each with 2 cores, each supporting 2 threads (64 x 2 x 2 = 256), said Laing. Windows Server 2008 today supports up to 64 logical processors.

Rumor: New iPod nano to feature a Zune-like screen

According to various sources, the upcoming fourth generation iPod nanos will be returning to the rectangular style of the first and second-gen models with a screen not too different from the Zune's. The iconic click wheel will still be present in the new model, but the screen will have a 1.5:1 aspect ratio, as seen on the iPod touch, as opposed to the 1.33:1 ratio found on the current iPod nanos and the iPod classic.

For those unfamiliar with the Zune, the screen will be vertically oriented, meaning lists will be longer and thinner, and videos will be rotated 90 degrees, so in order to watch a video the device has to be turned on its side. All of this means that the new iPod nano will, in fact, be larger than the previous model in exchange for a bigger screen. There's no denying that an iPod refresh is definitely on the way, but when remains to be seen. Rumors suggest that the new iPods will be revealed later this year.

Windows 7 695x boot screen revealed

Chris Holmes, Windows Enthusiast and blogger, has posted a short and somewhat blurry video of the new Windows 7 boot screen in action. The latest sign of changes for Windows 7 signals a departure from the Vista boot up screen. Microsoft kept the boot screen simple with Vista after asking BIOS makers, PC makers, and video card makers to remove product advertisement screens at system boot. Microsoft created a simple boot method which it claimed took 6 seconds off initial boot compared to the more graphical boot that it had originally planned with the Longhorn betas.

European Vista and XP to get browser ballot screen too

Microsoft has confirmed that it will be distributing a ballot screen software update to users, in Europe, of Windows XP and Windows Vista. Last week Neowin reported that Microsoft has proposed the idea of a ballot screen to the EU. European consumers who buy a new Windows PC with Internet Explorer set as their default browser would be shown a ‘ballot screen' from which they could, if they wished, easily install competing browsers from the Web. If this proposal is ultimately accepted, Microsoft will ship Windows in Europe with the full functionality available in the rest of the world.

Mozilla wants Windows ballot screen changed

Last week Neowin reported that Microsoft had made changes to the Windows browser ballot screen, which will make selecting a browser for consumers much easier. Mozilla was not happy with their placement on the browser ballot screen, and has purposed Microsoft change the screen once again, placing them first selection. All companies need to submit final purposes before November 9 before any more changes can be made. Mozilla purposed a change today that would change the current ordering of the browsers, currently in alphabetical order of manufacture, to order of market share, with the exception of IE. The reordering of the browsers would place Firefox in the first slot, followed by Chrome, Opera and Safari.

Modifying the All Users profile in Vista or Windows Server 2008

Peter Fitzsimon: Ok, so I just spend a few whistful hours trying to work out how to modify the "All Users" profile on a Windows Server 2008 system. I wanted to add a program to run at login (e.g. in the Start Menu|Programs|Startup directory) for all users that login, but things are now a bit different with Vista and Windows Server 2008.

I have found quite a few people asking similar questions on the Internet but no one seems to have offered a solution that works so I thought I'd post my findings.

Firstly, for those who haven't hit this before, the "C:Documents and Settings" directory where user profiles are stored in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems has changed to "C:Users" in Vista and Windows Server 2008. (I regularly encounter XP users who have upgraded to Vista getting confused by this one)

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: The blue screen of death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows stop screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.
