Microsoft has 2 & 1/2 days left until Summer ends and the first day of fall officially starts. and still no word on what or if anything is happening with Ultimate Extras. The Ultimate Extra blog still hasn't been updated since July 2nd when it said it intended to deliver DreamScene and the Language Packs by the end of summer.
"We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in January (Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs) until they meet the high quality bar required by our enthusiastic customers-and we believe that we can achieve that bar by the end of this summer".
I don't know about you, but I am beginning to think they won't make it. It's a real shame that a huge corporation fails to keep its Software users up-to-date on whats going on with the development of the extras.

Microsoft workers set to recieve a bar on campus

Windows 7 could soon be powered by Jack Daniels and Smirnoff Vodka if the opening of a new Spitfire bar on campus attracts thirsty Windows team members. Todd Bishop first revealed the plans to setup a bar on Microsoft's Redmond campus a month ago and now Reymond Chen, Shell developer for the Windows Team, has revealed employees are now playing the name game to name the bar, albeit un-officially. When we questioned Chen on what Aero Shake was at Microsoft's PDC conference he denied any knowledge of the feature and claimed, with the assistance of his Microsoft colleagues, that Microsoft could be building a nuclear missile into Windows 7.

Sears First Out Of Gates with 2D Bar Codes

Efforts to implement retail 2D bar codes are accelerating: Sears, in conjuction with vendor ScanBuy, became the first U.S. retailer to begin a public trial that started in mid-December at a store in Marietta, Georgia. As opposed the the traditional row of black lines (a 1D barcode), 2D barcodes look like a grid and make use of a second, vertical dimension, allowing them to store more data. What Sears hopes to do is to allow a cell phone's digital camera "look" at a small 2D bar code on an advertisement, which launches an applet. A server interprets the bar code and the phone then launches a Web browser and deep-links to a page on that site, typically the Web site of the advertiser.

Google introduces new 'Go' programming language

Search, mail, mobile operating systems, advertising and mapping. These are all areas in which Google plays a big part. The company is ever expanding, however, and today they've demonstrated that: Google has just introduced an entirely new programming language, taking influences from C++ and Python, called, quite simply, Go. The language, which has a website here, "combines the development speed of working in a dynamic language like Python with the performance and safety of a compiled language like C or C++," according to the blog post made by Google. To give you a sample of the code, courtesy of TechCrunch, here is a simple 'Hello, World!' program. 05 package main 07 import fmt "fmt" // Package implementing formatted I/O.

The future of the Firefox address bar

Rafe Needleman: I had an interesting discussion today about Firefox with Mozilla's Mike Schroepfer and Mike Beltzner. One of the things we drilled into a bit was the address bar in Firefox 3 (download). It's being called the "awesome bar" at Mozilla, and while it will end up with an official name eventually (the "smart location bar"), what it does for users can fairly be described as awesome. And as it's probably the most important touchpoint in the browser, it's worth exploring not just what it means for users but for Mozilla as well.
