04.11.2005Record Label Quits, Uploads Albums onto The Pirate Bay
Dependent Records, an independent record label from Germany recently decided to shut its doors and upload all its albums onto The Pirate Bay.
Interestingly, a year ago the the CEO of the label mentioned piracy as one of the main reasons why they decided to quit.
Nonetheless, a few
days ago Dependent records’ CEO Stefan Herwig decided to upload all the albums from his label -which mainly features aggrotech,
electro-industrial and futurepop artists- onto The Pirate Bay. In the description on the torrent download page Herwig writes: “I closed down my
record label Dependent Records for good. But since I want my music to be heard by the people out there, everything I have ever published is now
available on The Pirate Bay,” stressing that it’s a legal torrent, approved by the label.
Over the past few months, more and
more artists have decided to make their music available for free on BitTorrent sites. However, this move from Dependent Records seems to be a bit odd,
especially when you read why the label decided to close its doors.

21.03.2008Update: "Vista Capable" trial
The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

06.01.2009Microsoft: Vista Capable site description unchanged
Despite reports to the
contrary, Microsoft said
Tuesday it has not changed
wording at its Web site to
explain more clearly how
hardware with a "Windows
Vista Capable" label will
perform when running the OS,
in light of a class-action
lawsuit filed against the
vendor last week.
Reports published this week
by The Seattle Times and other
news outlets claimed that
Microsoft has updated the
description of what the label
means on the
Windows
Vista Capable Web site,
which is part of a marketing
campaign that was launched
before Vista was available.
According to reports,
the changes are in direct
response to a lawsuit filed in
the U.S. District Court for
the Western District of
Washington last week. The suit
claims that Microsoft unfairly
labeled PCs "Windows Vista
Capable" even when the
computers could run only the
most basic form of the OS.
Moreover, many of the machines
with the label can't or
poorly run Home Premium, the
least expensive version of
Vista that includes most of
the heavily advertised
features, according to the
suit, which is seeking
class-action status and
damages from the vendor.

07.07.2009Is Microsoft 'capable' of stopping Vista Capable lawsuit?
Microsoft would dearly love the Vista Capable lawsuit to just go away, but once the wheels of justice start grinding, can any amount of grease stop
the squeaky wheel?
Microsofts Vista Capable class action lawsuit is in the news again, this time because Microsoft wants an
appeals court to reverse the decision to have granted the case official ˜class action status.
The whole situation bubbled up
because a number of consumers felt duped by the Vista Capable sticker that implied a computer with such a label would be able to run Vista, presumably
at least the ˜Home Premium version of Vista with the fancy Aero graphics, instead of the Vista Home Basic version which had no such capability.

15.05.2007DSG blames Vista for £20 million in lost profit
UK Retail outfit, DSG has issued a profit warning blaming Microsoft's Vista for £20 million in lost profit.
Mark Webb, a
spokesman for the group which runs PC World and Currys shops, having largely ditched the Dixons label, said: "Vista just didn't capture the
imagination as much as previous versions of Windows." Although sales volumes have been good, he said, "We've not seen the huge rush that we would
have hoped for."
Webb said very few people were buying boxed copies of Vista, feeling it was hardly worth upgrading from XP. The
weedy OS overhaul also hit sales of new PCs, the company complained.

18.10.2007RCRDLBL.com: Free tunes for your Zunes
Peter Rojas of Engadget and Gizmodo fame has started a new record label which goes by the clever name
RCRDLBL.com. RCRDLBL is a big shift from your typical record label in that the music is free... yes, free. Instead of track
sales, the bands are paid from advertising on the site. That might not get you gold rims and a dedicated episode of Cribs, but it's a good incubator
for bands who want to be heard.
The music is licensed under Creative Commons - NonCommercial, so you can freely download it to
your computer and/or any of your devices (Zune, cellphone, or one of those pod-things), you can even remix the music into something new, so long as
you're not making any money off of it yourself in distribution. RSS feeds for the site and for each artist are available, as well as various web
gadgets (Vista Sidebar gadgets coming soon, or you could use
Amnesty on the existing ones.)
