Microsoft's new leaders prepare for the post-Gates era

Microsoft had always taken an ad-hoc approach to charting the future of technology and its place in it, relying heavily on the insights of Bill Gates and his legendary "think weeks."

With the twilight of Gates' career at the company approaching and new technical and strategic leaders Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie preparing to fill his role, Microsoft executives decided to make this prognosticating more formal.

"This year we, for the first time, said 'Let's not make this ad hoc,' " Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told a small audience of tech-industry tastemakers in April.

So company leaders recorded their best guesses about "the things that are going to change technology over the next five to 10 years what we can do to lead those trends," Ballmer said. It was an attempt, he said, to do what Gates has done "in his head" and bring more people into the act.

ICANN moves ahead with international domain names

Participants made good progress discussing changes to Internet governance during an ICANN meeting in Puerto Rico that closed on Friday, leaders of the organization said.

One topic that leaders worked on was the future enablement of non-Latin characters in domain names. ICANN hopes to support Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, and other characters in the future, but that's easier said than done.

In 2003, ICANN made an attempt to widen the acceptable characters but found that its rules were too permissive, said Vint Cerf, ICANN's chairman. "There could be confusion between similar registrations that might mislead users," he said during a conference call to discuss the meeting. ..

Major Nelson: How Would You Change Microsoft?

Got a beef with the way Microsoft runs things? Anything? Now's your chance to tell it to someone's face -- by proxy. Major Nelson (aka Larry Hryb) is heading to a big, important meeting filled with big, important Microsoft people next week, and he wants to know what you would have to say to them.

"If you had ten minutes with the CTO of Microsoft, what kind of advice would you offer? What questions would you ask?" writes Hryb in the post. Head over and let him know in the comments, and he promises to share some with the appropriate people. In reality, though, with 612 comments (and counting) already there, the odds of getting yours through may be pretty slim.

Microsoft Gets Gartner's Business Intelligence Top Ranking

Business Objects and Cognos have long been considered the leaders in business intelligence (BI) platforms. But in a surprising new report, Gartner ranks Microsoft ahead of those companies in its ability to execute.

Gartner's "magic quadrants" are typically annual market evaluations that place software vendors in one of four quadrants within a square: niche players, visionaries, challengers, and leaders. Specific placement depends on a vendor's ability to execute, which moves them upward, and completeness of vision, which moves them to the right.
