Windows Server 2008 KMS Setup Demonstration

This video demonstrates how to implement the Key Management Service (KMS) in your organization. KMS is a local activation service, and is the recommended method of activating volume license editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in organizations where most computers are consistently connected to the network. This demo shows how to set up the KMS host on a Windows Server 2008 computer, how to activate KMS clients with the KMS host, and how to review activation status using the slmgr.vbs command.

KMS 1.1 for Server 2003 is Release to Web

Michael Greene: The new version of KMS for Server 2003 is now available for download.  As stated on the site, KMS version 1.1 for Windows Server 2003 provides:

X86 (EN-US) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82964

X64 (EN-US) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83041

KMS on Server 2003 and 2008 should each behave the same way.  In fact, if you want to use both Server 2003 and Server 2008 to host KMS, the clients can move between the hosts transparently to the end user.  The "rules" for number of activations to start activating servers (5) and clients (25) are the same across both platforms, and you should use the same key to activate KMS regardless of whether it is running on 2003 or 2008.

Illegal KMS server appears on the Internet

The business launch of Windows Vista is only a few days behind us and already the attempts to pirate Windows Vista are underway. Recently I stumbled on news of a rogue KMS servers that has appeared on the internet with information on how to activate a copy of Windows Vista VL against the server. Once activated your illegal copy of Windows Vista will be good for 180 days before it needs to talk to the KMS server again.

KMS, which stands for Key Management Service, is part of the Volume Activation 2.0 scheme to protect Windows Vista and Longhorn Server from piracy. As part of your license agreement with Microsoft you agree to not bring up a KMS server on the public internet. This server is a clear violation of that agreement, which I doubt they had.

Troubleshooting KMS Activation - Part 1, the client

Windows activation is simple and straightforward if you understand the components. I have had a few customers that stumbled when getting a KMS online and in every case it has been an issue with name resolution, network connectivity, or they simply did not understand how to use the keys.

Activation is designed to help you with deployments and sustain your environment even in the event a key gets lost. KMS is the simplest of all the activation methods because you only need to worry about putting a key in one machine. You can then deploy new machines without having to ever worry about keys unless your device will be off the network for more than 6 months.

This is the first of a two part series to break down KMS troubleshooting in to a process that should help identify exactly what is at fault. I don't want to mislead or instill fear to those who are just starting out - the process is normally simple by design. However, for those who have run in to trouble, I'd like to publish a guide that will help you isolate and correct the issue you've encountered without spinning your wheels. Part 2 will be published next week with a focus on troubleshooting the server.

Run KMS on Server 2008, and which keys to use when activating Server 2008

Michael Greene: The documentation for volume activation 2.0 has been updated today for Server 2008.  You can find it here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=75674

Running KMS on Server 2008 is functionally very similar to running it on Vista RTM.  You leverage slmgr.vbs to bring the service online and then clients find the server based on the DNS srv record.  BTW, Server 2008 KMS can be run within a virtual environment.

If you want to know which volume license keys to use when activating new machines running Server 2008, see page 19 in the Planning Guide and the FAQ.  You only need to put one key in your KMS, and it will handle requests from both Vista and Server 2008.  There are separate keys, and unique keys based on which version of server you need to activate.  Before you get excited - this is much easier to understand than it might first seem.  Simply decide the "top" version of Server 2008 you might install and then use that MKS key to activate the service on a 2008 server.  All versions in groups below that version will also activate off that key.  The groups are simple...

Because of the traffic, the servers have been running at extremely slow speeds making it very difficult for users to access the page and the product downloads.

Google reveals their once-secret servers

Google is relatively quiet when it comes to the way it operates, but a recent conference on Wednesday has had the company reveal the data servers they use, and how they are put together. This may sound boring initially, but read on; Google certainly takes special care when it comes to data center efficiency. CNet has reported this unveiling, as well as an interview with the creator of these servers. As you may know, many companies buy servers from others companies like Dell and HP, but Google designs and builds their own unique computers. So how exactly are these special? Firstly, each server has a 12-volt battery supply built into it, in case any power issues arise.

Creating and Managing Local Groups on Servers and Desktops

How many Windows desktops does your company support? How many servers does your company have to house applications, files, printers, etc? Now, consider that on all of these desktops and servers you must control the local groups that reside on them. I am sure that most of you answered well over 1000 desktops and servers. That is a staggering number, considering that some of the servers might be in remote locations and some of the desktops might be laptops which roam throughout the US or world. If you wanted to create a local group on all of these computers, how would you get that done? Script? What if you wanted to ensure that the local Administrators group to have specific domain groups, such as the Domain Admins? How long would it take to ensure that these settings are complete? With new Group Policy Preferences, these tasks are easy and certain to apply to all of the desktops and servers that are designed to receive the settings.

Cisco's new blade servers to compete with existing partners

Cisco Systems is going to go in direct competition with their existing partners such as IBM and HP with the release of their new blade server line. Previously content to offer network connectivity solutions like routers and switches, Cisco is now going to provide multifunction computer servers designed to cut IT costs while reducing energy usage. The new servers will use Intel CPUs and they will run Microsoft's Hyper-V technology and/or VMWare's virtualization software. Blade servers are designed to minimize space and energy usage and, when combined with virtualization software, will provide the technology that will allow these servers to perform multiple functions at once.

Software makes virtual servers a moving target

Carefully managed virtual servers can make the job of attackers more difficult by reducing the time that any one version of a server is exposed to the Internet, according to a George Mason University professor who has developed software that phases virtual servers in and out of use.

By limiting how long virtual servers remain online and synchronizing their replacement with fresh servers, businesses can cut the damage hackers inflict, says Arun Sood, a computer science professor at the school.

His software, called Self Cleansing Intrusion Tolerance, or SCIT, resides on physical servers and coordinates the life cycle of the virtual servers. Sood has started privately funded SCIT Labs to create a commercial SCIT product.

The horror: 'Ghost servers' that haunt your bottom line

The problem may not rival the movies Poltergeist or The Amityville Horror for sheer terror, but CIOs and data center managers are still well advised to deal decisively with so-called ghost servers. Like celluloid zombies, these forgotten pieces of equipment are dead when it comes to improving the bottom line, but they are very much alive when it comes to eating up IT budgets.

The unproductive -- and usually undocumented -- servers take up valuable real estate, consume increasingly expensive electricity and, in some cases, absorb ongoing maintenance and lease payments.

"You can find ghost servers in a lot of enterprises," says John Phelps, an analyst at Gartner Inc. "And the larger and more diverse the company, the harder it can be to have a single group or technology platform that provides control over all corporate assets."

Sun Microsystems Inc., through case studies of two large corporate data center operations and anecdotal analysis of efforts with many customers, believes that 8% to 10% of all servers in large corporations have no identifiable function. In the two data center studies, 150 ghost servers were found in an installation of 1,800 servers, and 354 ghost servers were found in an installation of 3,500 servers.
