9.8.2006Vista Activation Cracked By Brute Force
Thanks to voidunknown
for submitting this to the
Front Page.
It
appears that Keznews forum
member Snooza has discovered a
method that effectively
obtains a Windows Vista key
which can then be activated.
The idea is a simple brute
force attack: the software
generates keys and when it
finds one, you manually have
to check if it activates. The
8-step method can take
anywhere from two minutes to
two days. Members of the forum
have verified the strategy and
claim it works. This technique
should worry Microsoft, not
because they are losing
customers to piracy again, but
because the customers who are
actually spending the money on
the latest Windows version may
start being unable to activate
the software with a legally
purchased key. It seems that
the main issue is time, and
with today's modern PCs, it
really isn't that much of a
problem. Evidently, pirates
would rather wait a couple of
hours, than go to work and
make the money needed to
purchase a legal copy. The
author of the article over at
Keznews has a disclaimer which
emphasizes that, " under no
circumstances should anyone
sell the key that they
generate. I do not support
Piracy, this was simply an
experiment in which i used to
practice my vbscripting. This
was just for fun and was a
complete accident! I strongly
encourage everyone to purchase
windows vista, and be a
genuine customer! "
That hasn't stopped
him from offering his crack as
a public download.

09.12.2005Windows Vista Keygen a Hoax
Thanks to dw2003 for
submitting this to the Front
Page.
KezNews forum
member Computer User ,
quickly infamous for releasing
his Brute Force Keygen to the
world, has confessed the piece
of software isn't all it was
hyped up to be. " Fact is
the brute force keygen is a
joke, I never intended for it
to work. I have never gotten
it to work, everyone should
stop using it! " This is
quite a shocking statement for
the simple reason that many
have already reported that
they have found keys which
activate just fine.
" Everyone who said they
got a key a probably lying or
mistaken! " Either the
author of the program has
decided he does not want to
get in trouble, or he is
genuinely telling the truth.
In short, the generator does
work, but it is a very
impractical crack.

05.08.2006Darn that pesky euro! RSS feed problem traced to currency character
Well, as soon as we start publicizing our RSS feeds -- and we have one new one just for Betanews Alpha -- we get reports of problems with them. I'm
able to corroborate some of what many Firefox users are reporting: With some Firefox installations, our RSS feeds have been coming up blank. Some,
though not all.
One thing we noticed: On systems where Firefox is installed along with a separate RSS news reader, our RSS feed pages
do
not turn up blank in Firefox. In fact, they look fine. On systems where no separate RSS reader is installed, our feed pages
do turn up
blank.
Our infrastructure man -- or perhaps better put, "InfraMan," Eric Steil -- discovered the problem this afternoon: Believe it
or not, it has to do with the character for the euro, the European currency. I won't type that character here because it may cause the problem, up
until Eric installs the solution. Believe it or not, for Firefox browsers that rely on Live Bookmarks, the inclusion of the euro character in the page
causes the whole feed to come up blank. Anyway, we've tracked down the problem, and we're implementing the fix right away...

22.12.20062007: The Year in RSS
Marshall Kirkpatrick: This past year was a big one for RSS. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, was the backbone of all early developments in the new
era of the internet. It made blogs readable, podcasts subscribable, wikis trackable and search persistent. While explicit, knowing adoption of RSS
is often said to be dismal ("it's too complicated, it's just more info overload" etc.) - I think we may be underestimating the extent of adoption.
Here's my list of highlights from 2007, what's yours?
Three years after
a 2004 Pew study found that 1 out of 20 people online said they used an RSS aggregator to read content online (in 2004!) -
RSS was in 2007
the 3rd most searched for "what is" term on Google all
year. Only "love" and "autism" were looked up more and RSS beat out both "emo" and "HPV."

Companies Tap RSS to Tame Info Overload
As employees struggle to read an increasing amount of work-related material, some companies have turned to RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology
to improve productivity.
With RSS servers and readers designed for workplaces, IT departments set up internal information feeds
that employees can subscribe to, a delivery mechanism that, for some information, can be more precise and effective than e-mail.
"The first problem we see addressed regularly with enterprise RSS systems is e-mail overload. Most knowledge workers these days are just about
completely fed up with e-mail," said Oliver Young, a Forrester Research analyst.
An enterprise RSS system is ideal for
delivering the type of information employees need to know about, but not necessarily act on right away, Young said.
