Internet Explorer 7 news + screenshots
Microsoft adds tabs, search, RSS and anti-phishing to IE 7.
Over all it seems a big improvement over the sloppy current release and previous incarnations. A lot of this, I put down to the increasing market share of
Firefox, my current browser of choice.

28.09.2005Blu-ray support hinges on disc
copy, says Intel
Intel Corp., which
last week expressed support
for the HD-DVD format for
high-definition video discs,
is open to also supporting the
rival Blu-ray Disc format
should its backers commit to
allowing the copying of
content from discs onto home
multimedia servers, an Intel
executive said
Tuesday.
I
ntel???s decision to join the
HD-DVD Promotion Group and
come out in favor of the
format, which it did together
with Microsoft Corp., was a
departure from the company???s
usual stance of technology
neutrality.
The
decision was born out of a
belief that the interests of
consumers are being ignored as
the world???s largest consumer
electronics, computer and
content companies prepared to
bring two competing and
incompatible high-definition
optical disc formats to
market, said Donald McDonald,
vice president and general
manager of Intel???s digital
home group. He was speaking at

Japan, on Tuesday...

04.10.2005Autodesk now owns Maya and 3D
Studio
Autodesk, the makers
of 3D Studio Max has acquired
Alias, the makers of Maya for
$182 million in cash. For
those of you who thought that
3D Studio Max was made by
Discreet, well, Autodesk now
owns Discreet so in effect,
the 3D modeling software
market is under control by
Autodesk.
Most 3D modeling that you see
in movies, TV, and games is
done using either Maya or 3D
Studio Max. This
concentration of market power
by a single company in such a
key market has many designers
and artists quite
nervous.
"What
about the cost of both
products?" said Scott
Tykoski, a 3D graphics
designer at Stardock. "These
are expensive products today
when there's competition,
what about in the future? Are
we going to be paying $12,000
base cost for these programs
in a
year?"
According
to Autodesk, the product
release schedule for both
products will continue into
the foreseeable future without
modification. The two
companies will continue to
exist and market and sell both
Maya and 3D Studio Max for the
near future.
What
the actual effect on
development of both products
now that competition between
the two is gone remains to be
seen.

05.10.2005Microsoft makes major security
move
As expected, Microsoft
has just outlined plans for a
range of new corporate
security services and
products.
CEO Steve Ballmer and security
VP Mike Nash jetted in to
Germany to flesh out the
announcement, which covers
virus, spam and spyware
protection.
The
most important bit of the
announcement covered a new
enterprise-class,
subscription-based service
called Client Protection, a
management console that lets
IT managers generate reports
and alerts on spyware, viruses
and other types of malware.
This will be available on beta
late this year with no date
yet set for full rollout. It
has parallels with the Windows
OneCare security service for
consumers that???s been in
production for a
while.
"To help
our customers combat the
evolving threats and to have
those rights protected, we are
taking a holistic approach to
security that includes
developing new technology,
partnering with the industry
and keeping customers as
educated as possible about how
to stay ahead of the latest
threats facing them," said
Nash.
There???s
also going to be a new
anti-virus and anti-spam
product next year based around
the vendor???s buyout of
Sybari earlier this
year.
