Photoshop CS2, however, is listed as not compatible with Snow Leopard. "While older Adobe and Macromedia applications may install and run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6), they were designed, tested and released to the public several years before this new operating system became available," the document states. "You may therefore experience a variety of installation, stability, and reliability issues for which there is no resolution.

If you follow Neowin then you've been following all the recent advertisement shenanigans lately, and as you may see, said shenanigans have no end in sight. The four ads, titled 'Biohazard Suit', 'Legal Copy', 'Stacks' and 'Time Traveler' and aim at things like having to use virus protection (Biohazard Suit) and crashing (Time Traveler). These will no doubt spark a bonfire of typical controversy, especially the 'Time Traveler' video. Apple gets in a mucking fuddle over iPhone dictionary app

In the latest twist of Apple's confusing iPhone AppStore policies, one developers dictionary application was rejected for "objectionable content". Why? It contained swear words. In a blog post by John Gruber, technical writer and technology pundit, Gruber confirms Apple censored an English dictionary. Matchstick software, developers of Ninja Words - a "really fast" dictionary, first submitted their iPhone application on May 13; it was rejected two days later. According to Phil Crosby, one of Ninjawords's developers, "Our app was crashing on the latest beta of iPhone OS 3.0. We quickly fixed this issue and resubmitted." Matchstick did not hear from Apple again until May 30 when Apple rejected the application for "objectionable content".

Microsoft to move graphics outside OS kernel

Microsoft will move the graphics for its next version of Windows outside of the operating system's kernel to improve reliability, the software giant has told Techworld.

Vista's graphics subsystem, codenamed Avalon and formally known as the Windows Presentation Foundation, will be pulled out the kernel because many lock-ups are the result of the GUI freezing, Microsoft infrastructure architect Giovanni Marchetti told us exclusively yesterday.

The company has already announced to developers that most drivers, including graphics, will run in user mode - which means that they don't get access to the privileged kernel mode (or Ring 0). At this level, a process can do anything it likes, including overwriting memory that doesn't belong to it. The result of such overwriting by (usually) buggy code is often a system crash. So the move should result in greater reliability, because crashing drivers cause some 89 per cent of system crashes in Windows XP, according to Microsoft. When run in user mode, they won't be able to bring down the entire system...

Word 2007 Crashes Are a Feature, Not a Bug

The Word 2007 bugs pegged as security vulnerabilities by an Israeli researcher are nothing of the sort, Microsoft Corp. said Thursday. Instead, the application crashes reported as flaws are actually by design.

The researcher who posted details earlier this week of the bugs reacted by offering screenshots of the Word crashes and wondering why Microsoft disputed his findings.

On Monday, Mati Aharoni of Offensive Security warned of three new flaws in Word 2007 on the Milw0rm and SecurityVulns.com security sites, and posted malformed Word documents as proof-of-concepts. Microsoft, however, seemed unconcerned.

Late Wednesday, a company spokeswoman repeated the company's earlier contention that the Microsoft Security Response Center's (MSRC) investigation, "found that none of these claims demonstrate a vulnerability in Microsoft's Word 2007 or any part of the Microsoft Office System."

Unofficial fix issued for Vista networking flaw

A system-crashing bug with potential malware implications has been uncovered in Vista. But a fix for the vulnerability, which revolves around flaws in the operating system's network stack, may have to wait until the next service pack.

The TCP/IP stack buffer overflow was discovered by security researchers at Austrian firewall firm Phion in October. Details of the flaw, which also creates a potential mechanism to inject hostile code into vulnerable systems, were disclosed in a posting to BugTraq on Friday.

The vulnerability affects Enterprise and Ultimate versions of Vista in both 32 and 64 bit flavours of the operating system. XP is immune. Phion has published a workaround in the absence of a fix from Microsoft itself...

NVIDIA Drivers Crash Vista

Were you one of the many early Vista adopters who experienced crashing? Well don't go out and point your finger at Microsoft just yet. A recent study has shown that nearly 30% of Vista crashes(28.8% to be exact) in 2007 were due to NVIDIA drivers. That is an estimated 479,326 systems crashed due to the drivers.

Microsoft crashes came in second place with 17.9%. While NVIDIA's competitor; ATI, came in fourth in the single digits with only 9.3%. This is really going go pressure Intel because they have to support the incompatible chipsets. Hopefully in the near future we can see some improvement on the drivers compatibility.

IE8 and Reliability

Andy Zeigler: Developing technologies that work reliably on their own and as part of the computing ecosystem is core to our mission and is an important part of our commitment to Trustworthy Computing. Our customers and partners expect technologies and services they can depend on anytime, anywhere, and on any device. We focus on constant improvements to the dependability of our technologies and services.

For Internet Explorer, reliability means that the browser should always start quickly, perform well, connect to the Internet, and show Web sites without crashing or hanging. Most users want their browser to work, recover smoothly after a crash, and display the Web correctly. Users are not as concerned with what causes the problem, whether that be a poorly functioning add-on or poorly performing website. As part of our ongoing commitment to improve reliability, we have done a great deal of work in IE8 to make the browser more robust in all of these areas: performance, recovery and display. In particular I will discuss...
