Microsoft releases two Vista hotfix packs via Windows Update

Microsoft quietly released two mega-hotfix packs for Windows Vista via Windows Update on August 28.

Microsoft made the two hotfixes the reliability/performance pack (KB 938194) and the compatibility and stability pack (KB 938979) available to interested parties via the Windows download site on August 7. At that time, the Softies said Microsoft would push the Vista hotfix packs out to customers via Windows Update at an unspecified later date.

That date ended up being today. Both fix packs went out over Windows Update as recommended (not important) updates.

WSUS Server 2003 Fix for Vista SP1 Download

Windows Vista SP1 will be released as an update on Microsoft Update (MU). The patch is very large and there is a bug in Windows Server 2003 in the WinVerifyTrust API that will cause signing validation to fail.

What this means is that once you approve this update on a System Center Essentials 2007 server on a Windows Server 2003 server, every time the server syncs from MU it will redownload the package, fail the cert validation, and so the download will fail. The problem will continue until you install the WinVerifyTrust patch on the System Center Essentials server. This patch is a hotfix (not a public GDR), so is not intended to be widely distributed. We recommend it only be installed on the System Center Essentials server itself.

You can obtain this hotfix here:

Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391)

Microsoft have just posted a Windows Vista Genuine Validation Update to Windows Update. The update provides the latest information to the Windows Vista validation components, and is marked as an "Important" update.

It seems that the aim of the update is to further prevent "cracked" copies of Windows Vista from being able to run. Install the Windows Vista validation component updates to make sure that your copy of Windows Vista is genuine and is correctly licensed. If a problem is detected, the update will provide additional instructions.

WinVerifyTrust update will be mandatory for WSUS

Cecilia Cole: A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Windows Vista Service Pack 1s availability to WSUS. In that post, we mentioned that you should install the WinVerifyTrust update (KB 938759) if you are running your WSUS server on a Windows 2003 server to prevent Windows Vista SP1 from being continually re-downloaded to the server once the service pack is released to WSUS.

Today, wed like to let you know that, in order to make sure all customers are well protected, we will be marking this particular update as mandatory, which means it will appear in the Updates/WSUS Updates node of the Admin console, and will be auto-approved by default (since the Advanced/WSUS Updates checkbox is checked by default in Options/Automatic Approvals).

Microsoft posts two major Vista fix packs for download

Remember those Windows Vista reliability and performance fix packs beta versions of which temporarily escaped to the masses last week? On August 7, Microsoft posted the final versions of the two Vista fix packs for download.

The Vista performance fix pack, KB 938979, (both 32- and 64-bit versions) is downloadable here. The reliability fix pack, KB 938194, (32- and 64-bit flavors), can be downloaded here.

The two fix packs include a number of the updates that Microsoft is expected to deliver in the first full-fledged Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 release, a public beta of which is expected real soon now. SP1 is expected to include a number of security, performance and reliability fixes that Microsoft has been delivering since it shipped Vista, all in one single package.

Microsoft is promising to make the two new Vista fix packs available via Windows Update at a later date. The full statement, provided by a Microsoft spokeswoman:

The two updates will be available on Microsofts download center today, and will be available through Windows Update at a later date.

Windows 2003 KB: Slow network communication from Vista RTM (6000) to Windows 2003 SP2

Brad Rutkowski: This was one issue I worked on for quite some time a few months ago. We found that Vista clients were taking forever to download group policies from domain controllers in the regions while Vista SP1 and XP clients did not see the issue. If the local DC was running LH or Windows 2003 SP1, we didn't see any issue. If the server was running Windows 2003 SP2 though and had a certain type of hardware we would see the latency.

Based on customer reports, Windows Dev learned of more widespread devices in the network that dont understand greater window scale factors. So, they improved the heuristics in SP1 for when to limit or disable auto-tuning, which is why we only saw in in Vista RTM and not SP1.

The bug is in Windows 2003 SP2 and the details can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947773

So if you find that you have vista clients experiencing network latency when hitting a Windows 2003 SP2 server (File server, DC, Exchange, etc) then you should look into this hotfix.

Language Packs and Windows Vista SP1

We will be releasing Windows Vista SP1 in two "waves". The first wave will only provide Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista Ultimate PCs running the following 5 Languages: English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. The second wave will follow shortly after - supporting all 36 languages.
