Windows 2003 KB: Slow network communication from Vista RTM (6000) to Windows 2003 SP2

Brad Rutkowski: This was one issue I worked on for quite some time a few months ago. We found that Vista clients were taking forever to download group policies from domain controllers in the regions while Vista SP1 and XP clients did not see the issue. If the local DC was running LH or Windows 2003 SP1, we didn't see any issue. If the server was running Windows 2003 SP2 though and had a certain type of hardware we would see the latency.

Based on customer reports, Windows Dev learned of more widespread devices in the network that dont understand greater window scale factors. So, they improved the heuristics in SP1 for when to limit or disable auto-tuning, which is why we only saw in in Vista RTM and not SP1.

The bug is in Windows 2003 SP2 and the details can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947773

So if you find that you have vista clients experiencing network latency when hitting a Windows 2003 SP2 server (File server, DC, Exchange, etc) then you should look into this hotfix.

Coming December 11: The Windows Cumulative DST & TZ Update for 2008

Coming December 11th to an Internet connection near you: the 2008 Cumulative Daylight Saving Time and Time Zone update for Windows OSes. And yes, Venezuela is part of this update. This update is now available for IT Pros and SysAdmins as a download from Microsoft KB Article 942763.

Generally, end users do not have to install these updates manually, as updates like this one will be installed automagically via Windows Update beginning on December 11, 2007 rather than download and install these from the Microsoft Download Centre (as noted in the KB article link above). For end users who have their PCs managed by a central administrator, please contact your IT administrator for information on how PCs on your network will be updated.

Using System File Checker (SFC) To Fix Issues

Both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 include the System File Checker (SFC) tool. Previous operating systems included this tool also. This discussion is specific to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. If you would like more information on previous operating systems see the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747.

SFC scans and checks all Windows Resource Protected (WRP) resources. Windows Vista adds the following new functionality to the SFC tool:

· Ability to scan a single file

· Ability to scan a Windows installation offline

Cant resume Windows from hibernate on your 32-processor supercomputer? Apply this patch.

Long Zheng: Its not uncommon to come across a patch for a software problem youve never heard of or thought was possible. In most cases theyre caused by an unconventional use-case or a bad combination of hardware/software configurations. Sometimes the symptoms are so exceptional it makes you ponder about who in the world would be affected by it in the first place. I wouldnt be surprised if in this case it was just one person. The Microsoft KB article speaks for itself.

Clean up after your server

While learning about the changes in Active Directory on Windows Server 2008 at a recent conference, the presenters casually mentioned a new feature as an aside that is actually quite exciting!

If you have ever had a Domain Controller stolen or experience catastrophic hardware failure, then you are familiar with the joy that is manually cleaning up the DC metadata in Active Directory with NTDSUTIL. (This KB article has all the steps in case you have trouble going to sleep. Daniel Petri also has a good write-up here). It is a painful experience to say the least.

Microsoft releases two Vista hotfix packs via Windows Update

Microsoft quietly released two mega-hotfix packs for Windows Vista via Windows Update on August 28.

Microsoft made the two hotfixes the reliability/performance pack (KB 938194) and the compatibility and stability pack (KB 938979) available to interested parties via the Windows download site on August 7. At that time, the Softies said Microsoft would push the Vista hotfix packs out to customers via Windows Update at an unspecified later date.

That date ended up being today. Both fix packs went out over Windows Update as recommended (not important) updates.

Microsoft: 5573 Does Not Imply a Specific XP SP3 Build

Marius Oiaga: Microsoft is not saying much at all about the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and whatever information does manage to get through the translucent filters implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group,
presents little relevance. A recent reference related to XP SP3 is Build 5573 from KB951126. Judging by the fact that XP SP 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh 2 was Build 5508, speculation began circulating of a new version number 5573, that could even be the RTM build for the service pack. I contacted Microsoft on the matter, and this is not the case.

"The reference comes from 'A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP stops responding on a black screen after you resume the computer from hibernation' KB article 951126 available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126/. The file versions discussed on the Microsoft Help and Support page, referring to a hotfix for Windows XP SP3, are accurate," a Microsoft spokesman revealed in an email to Softpedia.

UPDATE: MSRC Blog: Microsoft Security Advisory (950627)

Mike Reavey: The MSRC on Friday afternoon posted an advisory about limited, targeted attacks using JET database files, commonly referenced as file type MDB. Many of you probably remember that MDB files are on the unsafe file type list (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925330), and are blocked from being opened by Outlook, are commonly removed from incoming email by Exchange, and trigger scary prompts similar to EXEs when clicked on with IE. So why the hubbub?

Office 2003 Service Pack Disables Older File Formats

In Service Pack 3 for Office 2003, Microsoft disabled support for many older file formats. If you have old Word, Excel, 1-2-3, Quattro, or Corel Draw documents, watch out! They did this because the old formats are 'less secure', which actually makes some sense, but only if you got the files from some untrustworthy source. Naturally, they did this by default, and then documented a mind-bogglingly complex workaround (KB 938810) rather than providing a user interface for adjusting it, or even a set of awkward 'Do you really want to do this?' dialog boxes to click through. And of course because these are, after all, old file formats ... many users will encounter the problem only months or years after the software change, while groping around in dusty and now-inaccessible archives.

Yes, there is an Office 2007 'kill switch'

Buried in a Knowledge Base article that Microsoft published to the Web on November 14 are details of Microsoft's plans to combat Office 2007 piracy via new Office Genuine Advantage lockdowns.

When asked last month whether Microsoft was planning to punish alleged Office 2007 pirates by crippling the functionality of their software in the same way that Microsoft is doing with Vista via reduced-functionality mode, Microsoft officials were noncommittal.

But now Microsoft's intentions are clear: Just as it is doing with Vista, Microsoft plans to incorporate what basically amounts to a "kill switch" into Office 2007. Office 2007 users who can't or won't pass activation muster within a set time period will be moved into "reduced-functionality mode," according to Microsoft's Knowledge Base article.
