A group of Romanian hackers had sent a warning email to Kaspersky that an imminent attack is about to happen, and it in fact did just that, 1 hour
after sending the email. The attack was a SQL injection into the company's database, but was unable to extract any real data, because the hackers
were not advanced enough to. An obviously embarrassed Kaspersky, an anti-virus and Internet security software developer, was ashamed that their web
site was breached. The attack made an SQL injection on the newly launched US web site, which could ruin the company's reputation in the market of
Internet security.

31.12.2008Kaspersky: Vista Firewall Not Enough Alone
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, has released a new analytical article on using leak tests to evaluate
firewall effectiveness by Nikolay Grebennikov, deputy director of the Department of Innovative Technologies. According to Grebennikov, due to the
increase in the number of malicious programs, the additional security provided by a firewall is increasingly pertinent since firewalls block
undesirable network traffic. He states that even the latest operating systems, such as Windows Vista, cannot block all types of leaks on their own
(although, from Windows XP SP2 onwards, Windows has included a firewall. Firewall functionality was significantly expanded in Windows Vista).

28.12.2007Kaspersky false alarm quarantines Windows Explorer
A faulty signature update from Kaspersky Lab on Wednesday flagged up Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) as infected with a low-risk virus, Huhk-C. As a
result the core Windows component was quarantined or worse.
Kaspersky released a revised update alongside advice on how to
recover legitimate system and application files from quarantine (the default setting) within two hours. But that's not much consolation for users
that had set their software to auto-delete infected files, who found themselves with hosed systems.
Among those affected was Reg
reader Carl. "A false positive caused the deletion of explorer.exe.," he reports. "It would have only caused problems for companies performing
their network scan during the hours that the dodgy update was present - which included me, unfortunately. I was working out of hours to fix the
previous Kaspersky update problem. I finally finished sorting it all at 5am.".

20.12.2007Dutch police request Malware removal How-To?
The Dutch High Tech Crime Unit identified a large botnet when they arrested a 19 year old Dutch man last week. The Unit asked Kaspersky Lab, a leading
developer of secure content management solutions, to provide the victims with instructions on how to neutralize the malware on their systems;
neutralizing the malware ultimately brings down the botnet. This is an excellent example of the close co-operation which exists between the antivirus
industry and law enforcement.
At the request of the Dutch police, Kaspersky Lab created detailed instructions on how to remove the malware.
The Dutch police have pointed victims towards a page on the Kaspersky Lab website which contains the removal instructions, and also to a website which
gives victims the opportunity to make a formal complaint to the police. Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist with Kaspersky Lab Benelux, who worked
closely with the High Tech Crime Unit, believes this case clearly illustrates how the security industry can help law enforcement in the fight against
cybercrime. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service agrees: "The Public Prosecution Service and the police worked together with Kaspersky
Lab on this case with full contentment".

13.08.2008Kaspersky predicts Vista security holes
Antivirus experts from
Kaspersky Labs have predicted
that 90 percent of current
malware will run on
Microsoft's latest operating
system, Windows Vista.
Although at the moment Vista
appears to be more secure than
previous Windows operating
systems, Kaspersky researchers
warned last week that as Vista
becomes more popular, it will
increasingly become a target
for hackers.
"We're not asking whether
vulnerabilities will be found,
but when," said Alexander
Gostev, principal antivirus
researcher for Kaspersky.
According to Gostev, one of
the first pieces of the
operating system to be
attacked will be PatchGuard,
the code that protects the
Vista kernel.
"One
of the first things to be
targeted will be the
technology which is meant to
make getting access to the
kernel more difficult," said
Gostev. "Particularly because
there are already approaches
for evaluating this
technology."

31.07.2009Kaspersky Detects New Worms Attacking MySpace and Facebook
Kaspersky Labs, has detected two variants of a new worm, Networm.Win32.Koobface.a. and Networm.Win32.Koobface.b, which attack MySpace and Facebook

01.08.2008Kaspersky Ships Vista AV Support
Software maker Kaspersky Lab
has released its initial
anti-virus products that
support Microsoft's new Vista
operating system. Shipped on
Dec. 28, the software is a
beta version of a maintenance
update for Kaspersky's
Anti-Virus 6.0 and Internet
Security products that
includes the new support for
Vista, which was introduced by
Microsoft in mid-November
2006.
While the
first Vista-oriented products
built by Kaspersky, which has
its headquarters in Moscow,
Russia, cover the company's
consumer-oriented
technologies, the firm is in
the process of creating
versions of its enterprise
security applications that
will be tailored to work with
the Microsoft OS. Kaspersky
has yet to disclose publicly
an official date when those
products will arrive.
Built with a number of
security tools onboard,
including anti-virus
capabilities, some industry
watchers have predicted that
the arrival of Vista will make
it harder for mid-tier
software makers such as
Kaspersky to compete, as
Microsoft's entry to the
market will also push industry
leaders Symantec and McAfee to
cut pricing for their own
applications.

11.05.2009Researcher to Demonstrate Attack Code for Intel Chips
Security researcher and author Kris Kaspersky plans to demonstrate how an attacker can target flaws in Intel's microprocessors to remotely attack
a computer using javascript or TCP/IP packets, regardless of what operating system the computer is running.
Kaspersky will
demonstrate how such an attack can be made in a presentation at the upcoming Hack In The Box (HITB) Security Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
during October. The proof-of-concept attacks will show how processor bugs, called errata, can be exploited using certain instruction sequences and a
knowledge of how Java compilers work, allowing an attacker to take control of the compiler.
"I'm going to show real working code...and
make it publicly available," Kaspersky said, adding that CPU bugs are a growing threat and malware is being written that targets these
vulnerabilities.

14.07.2008Kaspersky: Mac and Linux viruses to rise 'significantly'
Eugene Kaspersky, co-founder
and head of anti-virus
research at Kaspersky Labs,
claims that because Vista
hasn't entered the market
with a bang, some customers
will start moving towards both
the Mac and open-source
platforms, making them a more
attractive target for malware
writers. Kaspersky claims that
Mac viruses are no more
difficult to repel than
Windows attacks, but says
" it's not so easy to find
good
experts for
non-Windows platforms ."
On the other hand, " more
people are watching
open-source code, so they are
more quick to find problems.
If the people who make the fix
are good guys, that's great;
if they are bad guys, that's
a problem ." Although
Kaspersky agrees Vista is
fundamentally more secure than
XP, he says not all security
vendors have perfected their
software for Vista yet.
" Is a less protected XP
with a ready set of security
applications better than a
more secure Vista with less
developed security
applications? Microsoft paid a
lot of attention to security
, but it means less
flexibility for security
vendors ."
Kaspersky also warned that
malware writers are
increasingly turning their
attention to non-PC platforms,
including consoles and
smartphones. He makes an
example out of Sony's new
console, saying that " if
there are viruses for the
PlayStation 3, if the
situation is such that we have
to have protection for these
devices, we will have
products ." The Russian
also claims that foreign
malware experts are growing
wise to new developments in
the smartphone arena and
predicts that " this year
they are going to introduce
online banking through
smartphones and Chinese
hackers will turn to
smartphone phishing ".
