Kaspersky impressed by botnet slickness

Cybercrime fighter Eugene Kaspersky can't help but be impressed by the slick operations behind the Conficker botnet, and says that it could have been worse had the botnet been after more than just money.

"They are high-end engineers who write code in a good way," Kaspersky told ZDNet.com.au yesterday. "They use cryptographic systems in the right way, they don't make mistakes — they are really professional."

Kaspersky hit with SQL injection

A group of Romanian hackers had sent a warning email to Kaspersky that an imminent attack is about to happen, and it in fact did just that, 1 hour after sending the email. The attack was a SQL injection into the company's database, but was unable to extract any real data, because the hackers were not advanced enough to. An obviously embarrassed Kaspersky, an anti-virus and Internet security software developer, was ashamed that their web site was breached. The attack made an SQL injection on the newly launched US web site, which could ruin the company's reputation in the market of Internet security.

Kaspersky: Vista Firewall Not Enough Alone

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, has released a new analytical article on using leak tests to evaluate firewall effectiveness by Nikolay Grebennikov, deputy director of the Department of Innovative Technologies. According to Grebennikov, due to the increase in the number of malicious programs, the additional security provided by a firewall is increasingly pertinent since firewalls block undesirable network traffic. He states that even the latest operating systems, such as Windows Vista, cannot block all types of leaks on their own (although, from Windows XP SP2 onwards, Windows has included a firewall. Firewall functionality was significantly expanded in Windows Vista).

Kaspersky false alarm quarantines Windows Explorer

A faulty signature update from Kaspersky Lab on Wednesday flagged up Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) as infected with a low-risk virus, Huhk-C. As a result the core Windows component was quarantined or worse.

Kaspersky released a revised update alongside advice on how to recover legitimate system and application files from quarantine (the default setting) within two hours. But that's not much consolation for users that had set their software to auto-delete infected files, who found themselves with hosed systems.

Among those affected was Reg reader Carl. "A false positive caused the deletion of explorer.exe.," he reports. "It would have only caused problems for companies performing their network scan during the hours that the dodgy update was present - which included me, unfortunately. I was working out of hours to fix the previous Kaspersky update problem. I finally finished sorting it all at 5am.".

Dutch police request Malware removal How-To?

The Dutch High Tech Crime Unit identified a large botnet when they arrested a 19 year old Dutch man last week. The Unit asked Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, to provide the victims with instructions on how to neutralize the malware on their systems; neutralizing the malware ultimately brings down the botnet. This is an excellent example of the close co-operation which exists between the antivirus industry and law enforcement.

At the request of the Dutch police, Kaspersky Lab created detailed instructions on how to remove the malware. The Dutch police have pointed victims towards a page on the Kaspersky Lab website which contains the removal instructions, and also to a website which gives victims the opportunity to make a formal complaint to the police. Eddy Willems, Security Evangelist with Kaspersky Lab Benelux, who worked closely with the High Tech Crime Unit, believes this case clearly illustrates how the security industry can help law enforcement in the fight against cybercrime. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service agrees: "The Public Prosecution Service and the police worked together with Kaspersky Lab on this case with full contentment".

Kaspersky predicts Vista security holes

Antivirus experts from Kaspersky Labs have predicted that 90 percent of current malware will run on Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista. Although at the moment Vista appears to be more secure than previous Windows operating systems, Kaspersky researchers warned last week that as Vista becomes more popular, it will increasingly become a target for hackers.

"We're not asking whether vulnerabilities will be found, but when," said Alexander Gostev, principal antivirus researcher for Kaspersky. According to Gostev, one of the first pieces of the operating system to be attacked will be PatchGuard, the code that protects the Vista kernel.

"One of the first things to be targeted will be the technology which is meant to make getting access to the kernel more difficult," said Gostev. "Particularly because there are already approaches for evaluating this technology."

PowerPoint Prototyping Toolkit (release 0.1)

Long Zheng: After hearing about the impact and success it had in Microsoft, I couldnt wait to get my hands on prototyping in PowerPoint 2007. Amongst a few things Manuel Clement suggested a few weeks ago in his presentation about œwireframe prototyping with Office PowerPoint 2007³, was to create a toolkit of commonly used GUI components to copy and paste when designing the prototype screens. Thats what I set out to build.

My vision for a toolkit is to contain a set of all the possible and feasible GUI components you could otherwise use in designing a real Windows application or browser application. For example, it should include buttons, drop-down lists, window frames, toolbars, dialog boxes and address bars. Of course there are probably as many of those as there are stars, so Ill just have to focus on the most commonly used ones.

Microsoft to provide Facebook-Toolkit-like add-on for Windows Live developers

Microsoft is planning on fielding in November a set of new tools that will support Windows Live developers.

The forthcoming Windows Live toolbox kit will include add-on tools that will work with Visual Studio 2008, the Expression family of designer tools and the Express hobbyist tools. the first deliverable will support Visual Studio 2008 and possibly also Visual Studio 2005.

Microsoft is planning to officially roll out the Visual studio Toolkit for Windows Live simultaneously at the Dev Connections show in Las Vegas and TechEd Europe. (My bet is the rollout will be of a beta of the toolkit, though I dont know this for sure.)

LiveSide.Net obtained some preliminary details about the new toolkit during the recent Mix UK conference. Microsoft execs told LiveSide that the new tools are going to look and work a lot like the Facebook Developer Toolkit that Microsoft announced in May 2007. In fact, the new Visual Studio Toolkit for Windows Live is being developed by Microsofts Doug Handler, who did a lot of the work on the Facebook toolkit in terms of using a drag-drop-to-canvas model, the Softies told LiveSide.)
