Take two: Microsoft says business licensees to get Windows 7 bits on September 1

Last week, it seemed Microsoft was going to make Windows 7 bits available to business customers with volume licensees right after the product was released to manufacturing in July.

But on July 13, Microsoft officials said business users with volume license agreements won’t be able to get the Windows 7 bits until September 1. Microsoft isn’t providing further information as to why customers will have to wait more than a month after RTM to get the final bits.

Xbox 360 price cut coming July 13

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about rumors that Microsoft was planning to chop the Xbox 360's price in July. Well, that price cut was all but confirmed today by Kotaku.

After posting leaked photos of upcoming Best Buy, Kmart, and other circulars, the gaming blog now has a GameStop employee's cell-phone snapshots of shelf art and an internal memo announcing that the Xbox 360 Pro (aka the Premium) would drop to $299.99 on Sunday, July 13. Not coincidentally, E3 kicks off the next day with - you guessed it - Microsoft's press conference.

As Sony's PlayStation 3 has come on strong in recent months, sales of the Xbox 360 have been flat, so a price drop seemed likely. The success of Metal Gear Solid 4 continues to give the PS3 a boost, but chances are Sony, too, will have to trim the price of its console before the holiday buying season.

All that said, the big question remains whether Microsoft will announce any new configurations of the Xbox 360. Rumor has it, the company is just using the price drop to clear out inventory of the 20GB Premium before it brings out a new 60GB version.

Business licensees to get final Windows 7 release in July

Microsoft officials have said the company expects to release Windows 7 to manufacturing before the end of this month. But they have been less forthcoming about when users will be able to get their hands on the product other than users who buy at retail new PCs with it preloaded starting October 22.

On July 10, however, Microsoft notified its reseller partners that it plans to allow business users who’ve purchased volume licenses plus Software Assurance contracts to get Windows 7 before the end of July.

Windows Live Messenger celebrates 10 years, hits 330m users

On July 22, 1999 Microsoft launched what would become the world's most popular instant messenging service, currently with over 330 active users every month. Previously named MSN Messenger, it was released to work on the Windows operating system platform for users to instantly chat over the Internet using Microsoft's .NET Messenger Service. Microsoft later re-branded MSN Messenger into Windows Live Messenger to merge it with its other Live services back in December 13, 2005. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) has gone through significant protocol changes and face lifts over its many versions in the last 10 years, ending up at Windows Live Messenger 2009 (designated to be called 9.0).

Microsoft confirms Windows 7 is final name

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will be the final name for next generation operating system.

In a blog, Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management confirmed the news.

And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7" Nash said.

This is the first time a Windows OS has been named by its codename. The decision was made for simplicity. Nash added "this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense."

Microsoft is set to reveal a lot more about Windows 7 at its professional developers conference which starts on the 27th October. Neowin will be live all week so look out for some great information about the future of Windows right here.

Report: AMD makes big comeback in U.S. retail

AMD has been on a rough ride lately, repeatedly testing investors' confidence in the company. But if we believe a new report of Current Analysis, the company has just wrapped up a rather sensational July that may leave some wondering what happened to Intel last month.

According to the market research firm, AMD-based desktop and notebook PCs achieved a unit share of 51.0% in July in U.S retail: Compared to June 2007, the company was able to steal 13.4 points from Intel; AMD's share was also up 4.3 points year over year from 46.7% in July of 2006.

This jump in market share comes somewhat unexpected, but was explained by Current Analysis through the firm's aggressive processor pricing. "As evidenced by several of the back-to-school product refreshes this year, AMD has aligned with its OEM partners such as HP and Gateway to bring assertively priced design wins to market. As a result, AMD systems now offer a much lower average selling price than its rival Intel," stated Toni Duboise, senior analyst for the market research firm.
