Steve Jobs death has been greatly exaggerated
News outlet Bloomberg gave Apple fans and investors a huge scare late yesterday when it accidentally published an incomplete version of Steve Jobs obituary over its wire service.

The death of Wikipedia?
Wikipedia, the encyclopedia that "anyone can edit," was a nice experiment in the "democratization" of publishing, but it didn't quite work out. Wikipedia is dead. It died the way the pure products of idealism always do, slowly and quietly and largely in secret, through the corrosive process of compromise.

Death of the apps installer?
One of the great bugbears for developers is the issue of fitting their splendid new applications code to the requirements demanded by applications installers. But could this be about to disappear as a problem? According to David Greschler, co-founder and VP of corporate marketing with Softricity, the answer is a soundly political ?maybe?.

Blue death on my hand :)
At the Roots of Windows Blue Screen of Death
Unfortunately for Microsoft, one of the aspects of its proprietary operating system that has grown to become associated by default with the Windows brand is the Blue Screen of Death. BSOD, for short, is the result of a critical system error that will stop the operating system dead in its tracks and lead to a reboot.

26.02.2007HD DVD: Format War Ain't Over 'Til It's Over
To paraphrase Mark Twain, HD
DVD's impending death has
been greatly exaggerated.
That's the word from the HD
DVD camp, given the press
pessimism about the format
following last week's news
that Target's only
stand-alone high-def DVD
player would be Blu-ray.
As another blow
to HD DVD, Video Business
reported late last week that
BJ's Wholesale club would
stock only Blu-ray discs. And
in June, Blockbuster announced
that it would offer only the
Blu-ray DVD format for rental
in 1,700 of its stores. The HD
DVD format is still being
offered through the company's
online channel,
blockbuster.com, as well as
through the 250 stores that
currently carry both
formats.
But
the HD DVD camp is saying, in
effect, that the battles are
swaying this way and that, and
that the war is still on. Each
side has competitive
advantages that it is
emphasizing, although most
observers agree that Blu-ray
has been doing better in
promotions. ..

07.07.2007Reports of Linksys' death exaggerated says Cisco
John Chambers' statement,
posted on YouTube , that the
Linksys brand would be phased
out seemed pretty unequivocal,
but the word from Cisco is
that the brand will be around
for a while yet.
In response to questions
at a media roundtable,
Chambers said: "
will come over time into a
Cisco brand. The reason we
kept Linksys' brand because
it was better known in the US
than even Cisco was for the
consumer. As you go globally
there's very little advantage
in that."
However a posting
on the official Cisco blog
site says otherwise: "There
have been some questions
lately about whether the
Linksys brand would be folded
into the Cisco brand. Here is
our response: 'Linksys
consumer and SMB products will
continue to be marketed under
the Linksys brand and co-exist
in the market with Cisco
branded connected home
products over the near term.
We will continue to examine
our branding strategy going
forward (as we have to date)
and make changes if and when
these changes add value to our
customers' decision making
processes and our channel
partners."..

Vista's Purple Screen of Death
We've all heard of (and, quite unfortunately, experienced) the infamous Blue Screen of Death. Some of us who tested the earlier Windows Vista beta builds had the unique experience of trying out the Red of Screen Death, which occurred when the bootloader
experienced an un-handled exception (we experienced more than our fair share of these during the early days of EasyBCD development!). And then
there's Vista's Purple Screen of
Death, which few have seen.

How to prevent Windows Vista's green ribbon of death
David A. Karp: Don't you just love it when something is so notorious
for a particular shortcoming that a new term is invented to describe it? It happened with the Windows Blue Screen of Death. It happened with the
Spinning Beach Ball of Death in Mac OS X. And it happened with the odd-number curse, referring to every other Star Trek film.
Now
it has happened with Vista's own Green Ribbon of Death, shown below.
The green ribbon is basically a progress bar, a screen
element Microsoft has sadly gone to great pains to excise from Windows Vista. But this particular progress bar is the harbinger of death for the
active Windows Explorer window, which, unfortunately, is not uncommon in Vista.

Death and Social Networking
Ever wondered what happens to Facebook profiles when their owner dies? As we previously reported, the social networking giant implements memorial
pages. It can be quite depressing for family and friends to login to their Facebook profiles and see it suggested that they poke the deceased. The
Globe and Mail recently reported about Amelia Shaw, who sees it suggested that she connect with her deceased friend every time she logs in. Simply
closing the accounts of the deceased seems to be more difficult than it seems. Facebook commented that with over 300 million users, they cannot
possibly know who has passed away. As such, they've implemented a system wherein family can notify the company of a user's death.

New Xbox 360 ring of death spotted: red-red/green-green
What could this be? Its a brand new error code spotted on the internally rearranged Falcon-based Xbox
360s. Youve got two red lights on the right and two greens on the left. Wild message board speculation suggest it could be a brand new internal error
or the same old general hardware failure that used to be represented by the red ring of death. But then why would M$ (omgnohedidnt) introduce a new
color scheme of hardware failure into the mix, just to bother us?

Google, Microsoft spark interest in modular data centers, but benefits may be exaggerated
Interest in modular data centers is growing, fueled by high-profile endorsements from Microsoft and Google. But the model raises new management
concerns, and efficiency claims may be exaggerated.
Modular, containerized data centers being sold by vendors such as IBM, Sun
and Rackable Systems fit storage and hundreds, sometimes thousands of servers into one large shipping container with its own cooling system. (See
photos in our related slide show.)
Microsoft, using Rackable containers, is building a data center outside Chicago with more than 150 containerized data centers, each holding 1,000 to
2,000 servers. Google, not to be outdone, secured a patent last year for a modular data center that includes "an intermodal shipping container and
computing systems mounted within the container."

Apple's Culture of Secrecy
"No one wants to die," said Apples chief executive, Steven P. Jobs. "And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped

His thoughts about death came during a portion of his speech in which he publicly discussed for the one and only time, so far as I can tell his
brush with pancreatic cancer.

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained
Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All
your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no
choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed:
The blue screen of death.
Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually
a Windows stop screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue
(studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what
caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error
details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

No charges over 'suicide' on web
Kevin Whitrick, 42, of
Wellington, Shropshire,
broadcasted his death over the
internet in March. Those
chatroom users who watched him
apparently commit suicide will
not face charges, the Crown
Prosecution Service has said.
The CPS said comments made by
chatroom users at the time did
not amount to a criminal
offence. The father-of-two was
found hanged after suffering
from severe depression for
several years. A spokesman
announced: " This is a
tragic case which resulted in
the untimely death of Kevin
Whitrick. We examined all the
evidence passed to us by the
police and have concluded that
none of the comments made in
the chatroom amounted to a
criminal offence. As a result,
there is insufficient evidence
to prosecute any person for
any criminal offence arising
out of Mr Whitrick's
death ."

Beat those bluescreen blues: what a Windows bluescreen actually means
The Windows Blue Screen of Death is hated and maligned, but it's really just trying to help. Read on to find out what it's trying to tell you.
Dan Warne recently had a cheeky dig at what
some consider to be the quintessential interactive Windows screen the blue screen of death, or BSOD.
Certainly, the unfriendly,
its all over for you vibe which every BSOD gives off has given Windows system faults a bad reputation over time. Personally, I rather like these
