20.11.200950 Reasons to switch from Windows to OS X?
Or, a lost sheep’s ongoing struggle to stay relevant in this internet age. Now don't get me wrong, I have always had quite a lot of respect
for Chris Pirillo, but something happened when Microsoft talked up Longhorn and eventually shipped Vista. Chris was enraged most of the time because
the promise of "Longhorn 2003" never happened, and I think he probably feels that Microsoft cheated themselves, and him out of a worthwhile upgrade.
Ever since, he hasn't involved himself in Microsoft (lab) events and has become quite outspoken against Windows Vista.
From
John's AbsoluteVista Blog: In a post last week, on St. Valentine’s Day no less, Chris Pirillo states his
50 reasons to switch
from Windows (any version?) to OS X.
After getting past his preamble about neutrality, he delivers his thoughts. Actually, we are
supposed to take his thoughts as neutral since it is not a Windows bash. Furthermore, since in his opening statements he declared his relationships
with some sponsors, we should take the product plugs as gospel. Feel free to ingest a grain/several grains of salt with his recommendations.
I have taken it upon myself to provide a public service by attempting to debunk some of the outright errors, factual errors, product plugs, and
gross misconceptions in his beliefs.

19.02.2008How Vista screws dual-booting
nirvana
Declan Kennedy at APC Magazine
has written an interesting
analysis looking at
Microsoft's suspicious
lack of advancement in OS boot
technique.
Put
simply, Vista will still
overwrite the master boot
record with no regard for any
other boot loader that may be
present.
But
Kennedy also describes how,
with the right boot loader
configuration, you can setup a
dual-boot system that allows
you to switch between Windows
and Linux without having to
reboot either OS, using
hibernation.
His
observations open up
interesting possibilities for
Mac users too. Boot Camp would
be considerably more useful if
it didn't involve closing
all applications and fully
restarting the system each
time. If it were just a case
of sleeping one OS to switch
to the other, it'd be the
next best thing to perfect
virtualisation. Will Apple
implement this in time for
Panther?..

03.09.2006Five reasons why XP will never die
Preston Gralla: Microsoft is doing its best to kill Windows XP, but that's not going to happen. No matter what the company does, the operating system
will live on. Here are five reasons why XP will never die.
Enterprises want XP
There's no escaping the
simple fact that enterprises have snubbed Vista, and show no signs of abandoning XP. Just a few days ago, Forrester said that a survey of 50,000
enterprise users found that throughout 2007, Windows XP use remained at a steady 89%. Vista grew from zero to 6% in that same time, but that came
about because users moved from Windows 2000 to Vista, not from XP to Vista. Don't expect corporations to switch to Vista from XP in 2008.

28.04.2009The Vista wow becomes a whisper
I wasn’t

newest incarnation
“100

Seeing Windows Vista for the first time may leave you searching for words.
Many people just say ‘Wow.’ Here are 100 reasons why,” the site says.
When Microsoft launched Windows Vista in

11.01.2006Small Businesses Switch to Vista Fastest, Study Says
Nearly half of businesses are in some phase of preparing to update desktops to Windows Vista, with small businesses moving the fastest to implement
the OS, according to a xreport released last week. The number of organizations evaluating and testing Vista increased from 29 percent in February 2007
to 48 percent by early November 2007, found the report, commissioned by reseller CDW and based on information collected by Walker Information from 772
IT decision makers. Moreover, about 35 percent of companies are currently implementing or have implemented Vista already, compared to 12 percent last
February, the report said. The report is the third of a wave of reports on Vista adoption that CDW has done since the OS was in its final testing
phases in October 2006. In the latest phase of release, which tracked Vista adoption from October 31 until Nov. 7, 2007, small businesses comprised 53
percent of those companies either using or evaluating Vista. The higher-education segment came in second, with 49 percent reporting that they are
evaluating or using the OS, while medium-to-large businesses were third, with 48 percent.

21.01.2008Closer Look: Beta Windows Vista Service Pack 1
With dissatisfaction over the Vista operating system persistent, can Microsoft right the OS's wrongs with its upcoming Vista service pack?
Microsoft made the latest beta of Vista SP1 available to the public earlier this month, and after informally testing it for a couple of days, I find
my PC is working more reliably--and some tasks especially file copying, take less time. But I was hoping for more out of SP1, such as bigger system
performance gains and fixes for Vista annoyances including the oft-criticized User Account Control feature.
And if you are waiting for
major improvements to switch to Vista, you'd better hope that Microsoft's SP1 development team goes into overdrive before the service
pack's official release and gives you more compelling reasons to make the jump to the OS. Vista undergoes no major overhaul with the SP1 release I
looked at.

22.01.2008DTV likely delayed till June 12
The Senate Republicans and Obama have been pushing the need to keep analog signals online instead of switching all television transmissions to
digital, to free up wireless spectrum, meaning that we could see a delay in the switch. It would seem after reports of the delay, and with the FCC
backing to prevent the switch, it is likely the Senate will postpone it. A new bill has been presented to delay the switch of DTV till June 12, 2009
because too many Americans, up to 6.5 million households, are not prepared for the switch. The original bill was passed by Congress in 2005,
mandating that the switch would be February 17, 2009.

06.02.2008Microsoft plots embedded OS futures
In his keynote at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) last month, Kevin Dallas, GM of Microsoft's Windows Embedded unit, tipped some of his
group's future product plans. Included are new versions of Windows CE 6.0 and Windows XP Embedded, plus the arrival of "Windows Vista Embedded."
Before detailing these, Dallas began his talk by providing "examples of where we could improve as an industry." Devices need to be
service-aware, he said, citing telephony and navigation as examples.
It should be possible to use a mobile device to receive a
phone call at home via VoIP (voice over IP), have it automatically switch to a WAN (and hands-free operation) when moved to a car, then seamlessly
switch over to a corporate WLAN at the office, said Dallas. Similarly, he added, navigation devices ought to move information from a PC, to a mobile
device, to an in-car system automatically.

10.10.2007An open letter to Microsoft on Windows 8
Dear Microsoft, Congratulations on recently releasing the Windows 7 release candidate. As I've mentioned before, it's shaping into an
excellent product and I have given my reasons why I think people should upgrade. But let's pause for a moment and look ahead to your supposed
next version of Windows, Windows 8, since it's already in planning stages. Now that you've gotten a way to get some kind of backwards
compatibility in your OS virtually, this presents an opportunity to rebuild Windows from the ground up and turn it into an excellent product. Here are
some ideas I think should be implemented into the next version of Windows: One version, one price There's no need so different editions of
Windows.

12.03.2009Sam's Tip of the Week #3 - Switching to Gmail, the No-Pain Way
Gmail is a very powerful web-based email solution with free IMAP access. I’m not going to go over reasons to switch to Gmail in this tip,
just a way to ease your transition.
The problem every time you switch email services is that you have to switch your address at every site
you use and notify all of your contacts that you have a new address. Oh, and you lose all of your mail.
Gmail includes a really nice
feature: it can receive email from your old address and plop it right into your Gmail inbox, as if it were sent to your Gmail address. This means that
you don’t have to switch your address anywhere if you don’t want to bother.
To enable this feature, first log in to your Gmail
account. Open Settings, and select the “Accounts” tab. Under this tab, you’ll see a section labeled “Get mail from other
accounts.” Click “Add a mail account you own.”
