Last week, I posted a few thoughts on Apple Pages. As I noted there, one of my real goals in buying a Mac was to see if this platform really did make it easier to focus on teaching my classes, rather than on creating the electronic materials my students expect to support those classes.

Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?

Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? The fact of the matter is that a lot of people from users, to developers, to workers, and to investors like Google. Heck, even I like google! (Look at the ads.)

Sun will Support OpenOffice.org

Sun Microsystems on Monday plans to announce that it will provide support for the OpenOffice.org productivity software suite, citing a wave of momentum behind the open-source project. The support, which starts at US$20 per user per year, will be offered to companies that distribute OpenOffice.org, not directly to end-users, according to Mark Herring, senior director of marketing for StarOffice/OpenOffice.org and Network.com. "For a lot of distributors, they wanted to distribute OpenOffice.org and had no option for back-line support," he said. OpenOffice.org and StarOffice, Sun's accompanying commercial product, are compatible with Microsoft Office and identical in terms of capabilities, which include word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. But until now, Sun only supported StarOffice.

IBM joins OpenOffice.org community

The OpenOffice.org community today announced that IBM will be joining the community to collaborate on the development of OpenOffice.org software. IBM will be making initial code contributions that it has been developing as part of its Lotus Notes product, including accessibility enhancements, and will be making ongoing contributions to the feature richness and code quality of OpenOffice.org. Besides working with the community on the free productivity suite's software, IBM will also leverage OpenOffice.org technology in its products.

"In the seven years since Sun founded the project, OpenOffice.org has fueled and filled the need for document data and productivity tools that are open and free. Open source software and ODF are having a profound impact around the world, with numerous communities and organizations coming together to support these initiatives and governments, and corporations and schools standardizing on the software.

Hands on with the new online version of OpenOffice.org

After going premium and suffering some community fragmentation, the OpenOffice.org open source office suite is being taken in a new direction by a company named Ulteo. A brainchild of Gael Duval, founder of Mandriva Linux, Ulteo's mission is to serve as a platform for putting applications onto the web. Using this approach, Ulteo has released a public beta of Online OpenOffice.org, which quite literally puts OpenOffice.org inside a browser.

There are of course some real advantages to Ulteo's offering, not the least of which is overcoming platform-specific issues, but like any major desktop software application that gets stuffed into a browser, Online OpenOffice.org has its drawbacks. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of the latest productivity suite to go online.

Microsoft desperate, says target OpenOffice.org

On Monday, OpenOffice.org called Microsoft's assertion that its open source application suite violates 45 of its patents "a desperate act."

"It's just hard to put into credible terms," said Louis Suarez-Potts, a community manager for OpenOffice.org and seven-year veteran of the all-volunteer group. "I don't understand what motivated Microsoft to risk so much with a position that can only serve to alienate customers, as well as those millions of people who use Linux."

In an interview with Fortune posted on the magazine's Web site Sunday, Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, spelled out the company's position. During the interview, Smith claimed that OpenOffice.org, the open source alternative to Microsoft's own Office suite, violates nearly four dozen patents. Smith did not specify the patents Microsoft believes have been violated by the application collection, nor did a follow-up statement issued by a Microsoft spokesman Monday. ..

First look: OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta a big step forward

It has been almost three years since the release of OpenOffice.org 2.0. During that time we've seen community fragmentation and frustration resulting from Sun's heavy involvement with the office suite's development, and even a third-party online version that provides editing and collaboration features. Now, the open source office suite is back with a new 3.0 beta release, ushering in a handful of major enhancements, broader file format support, and a solid batch of evolutionary new features. Ars Technica takes the new beta for a spin to see if our productivity increases.

New version of OpenOffice.org fixes critical bug

OpenOffice.org has issued a patch for a security vulnerability affecting several versions of its open-source office suite. The latest version, 2.4.1, is available for download on the organization's Web site.

The vulnerability is a memory problem called a heap overflow, OpenOffice.org said in an advisory. It can be exploited if an attacker sends someone an OpenOffice.org document that can take advantage of the flaw, which would then allow the hacker "to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the user running OpenOffice.org."
