02.07.2007Windows 7 to have only one "compatible" logo
The Register is reporting on an interesting story from WinHEC about how Microsoft is
planning to change how it will run the “compatible with Windows 7” logo program.
Microsoft seems to have learnt its lesson
after the disaster that was the Vista compatible program which had 4 different logos and would eventually see Microsoft ending up in court facing a
class action lawsuit.
Microsoft confirmed to partners on Wednesday that there would only be a single sticker that covers all PC’s
peripherals and software that has been certified to work with Windows 7 when it’s released.
The changes are timed to coincide with
Microsoft’s continued push towards Windows 7, helping partners to start developing products earlier than with Vista, which had only a relatively
small number of compatible programs ready when it launched.

11.01.2006Attackers Harvest FTP Credentials With New Crimeware Toolkit
Securiity researchers discovered that new malicious code spread through the black market is making its way onto some of the largest corporate Web
sites in the world. San Jose-based Finjan, a security company specializing in Web gateway solutions, announced today that it uncovered a database
containing more than 8,700 harvested FTP account credentials, including usernames, passwords and server addresses, spread through a malicious toolkit,
which cyber criminals use to harvest the information.
The information was available for blackmarket trade, along with the NeoSploit
version 2 crimeware toolkit, a malicious application specifically designed to abuse and trade stolen FTP account credentials from numerous legitimate
companies. The malware is subsequently distributed to other criminals who use the malicious code on high traffic Web sites for their own financial
gain. The findings were discovered by researchers at Finjan's Malicious Code Research Center with the company's Web analysis tool and
published in its monthly report. The analysis showed that a standalone application was found at the backend of the malicious server, which enabled
behind-the-scene information trading.

23.01.2008Windows 7 supports search plugins
When Vista was released, its search features were significantly better than XP's. It's time to take a look at what Microsoft is planning to do for
search for Windows 7; according to information Microsoft has released to developers, search in Windows 7 can go beyond a local network:
"Windows 7 supports searching for documents beyond the user's own PC. Developers and IT professionals can enable their search engines, document
repositories, web applications, and proprietary data stores to be searched from Windows 7 without needing to write and deploy client code. This
enables end users to search their corporate intranet or the web as easily as they can search for their local filesall from within the same familiar
Windows interface."
Furthermore, developers can add Windows 7 compatible OpenSearch support to any existing searchable web application
by adding RSS or ATOM output (the desktop client can then have a Search Connector for the service). SharePoint Search Server can also query these
compatible OpenSearch services (as shown at PDC 2008).

30.11.2008Windows 7: More than a Service Pack
According Bill Veghte, Vice President of Microsoft's Windows Division, Windows 7 is a lot more than a service pack-like release. It has a lot more in
store.
He clarifies it specifically in the area of compatibility. It's a "minor release" in terms of compatibility, because most
software and hardware compatible with Vista will be compatible with 7.
In terms of features, it's a "Major Release". Aspects such as
easier networking through the "Direct Access" feature, multi-touch capabilities, and an improved taskbar just underline some of the new features of
Windows 7.
Rumors about 7 being a "minor release" may have been started or agitated by Microsoft's designation of the next Windows
Server version as "Windows Server 2008 R2". R2 releases are usually very small compared to others; with the server variant of Windows being released
as an R2 build, it may have sparked some confusion and/or rumors from the tech community that Windows 7 will share the same description.
However, Microsoft stresses that, despite the confusion being spread, it's easy to see that Windows 7 will be a major release, and most definitely
a worthwhile upgrade for both consumers and businesses alike.
