iPod Touch 2G Gets Pwned

The iPod Touch 2G has officially been broken! Unlike the 'tethered' jailbreak that was offered some time ago, this release is the real deal. After discovering a hole in the bootrom of the iPod touch, they were able to work out an exploit that can 'unlock' any iPod Touch, regardless of the firmware version.

They were originally planning on keeping this a secret until the next rendition of the iPod Touch was released, but the exploit's 'geeky beauty,' the glamour they'd get for finally releasing a 2G version, and the fact that they love us so much, was enticing enough to let it rip.

For anyone curious about the aforementioned 'hole' in the bootrom, visit the iPhoneWiki.

A raw firmware patch that converts a 'tethered' 2G unlock into an 'untethered' one, is available here, but as of now, there are no PwnageTool or QuickPwn versions. We'll update you once those are released.

The "Dev-Team" has assured us that they'll continue to play their oh-so-fun game of cat and mouse throughout the summer, and into the release of the next iPhone. (Hoping that they don't fix the bootrom of course!)

iPhone accessories to include Apple 'DRM chip'

The iPhone 3.0 firmware promised us communication from firmware to accessories connected via either bluetooth or the dock connector. However, it has come to Neowin's attention through a reliable source that Apple will require these accessories to use the DRM chip found in the iPod shuffle. On the iPod shuffle, this restriction was only placed on 'Made for iPod' products. However, in the case of the iPhone and iPod touch, the accessories will communicate directly with the software. Apple has essentially moved their 'app store'-style approval process to hardware accessories. The chip, which much be licensed from Apple for a fee, ensures that Apple has actually approved the hardware.

iPod Touch firmware update fixes LCD issues

While many considered the LCD issues plaguing some iPod Touch units a hardware issue, Apple just released a firmware update for the device that appears to fix the problem.

That's the issue many Touch owners are dealing with at the MacRumors forums right now, it APPEARS to fix the problem.

Some forum members speculate that the update, which is a huge 150 MB, alters the contrast and brightness settings of the LCD screen. Others simply believe that the incorrect application of the LCD coating theory was just plain wrong, but that raises the question: Why did Apple admit to shipping faulty units if it could've asked users to wait for an update to fix the issue?

No one can answer that question, but one thing's certain: the update significantly fixes, at least to a degree, the LCD issue.

iPod touch cases are a dime a dozen these days, and it's no wonder; the metal backs of the things scratch more than a DJ in a record factory. Recently I had looked around for a better solution, but didn't want to settle for second best, and had discovered this: Shinnorie's GEN™ Label contoured nylon case. As the title may indicate, this review is for the iPod touch 2G device, but Shinnorie make these cases for the iPhone 3G and iPod Classic, also. The GEN™ Label case series is quite an interesting one. Shinnorie allows you to customize the color and thread of the case, as well as the color of the front panel.
